About this property

Panorama: Vista Paradise – Integrated farm

Panorama helps the community by managing a free-whey community project and is an example of integrated farming and humane animal husbandry. Panorama is located on Rancho El Rio, a peaceful sustainable farm and wildlife paradise by the Río Guacimal, and is perfect for families or larger groups. Come stay with us in our rustic 3bed/1bath cabin and experience sustainable farming initiatives, visit our family-run environmental community center, spend the day swimming in the river or hiking through the forest, and take day trips to the cloud forest.

Panorama is a lovely, newly built farm cabin with gorgeous views. With large picturesque windows, you’ll enjoy the view of the tropical mountain landscape as you relax in the hammock. We provide you with free organic coffee from our sister farm in Monteverde for the first morning of your stay for you to settle in and enjoy the beauty of our farm.

Panorama features handcrafted wood furnishings made from local sustainably-harvested wood, custom slate floor, and beautiful naturescape murals painted by a local community artist. With three bedrooms and one bathroom, Panorama easily sleeps up to 7 people. Two of the bedrooms have full sized beds, and the middle room has a bunkbed. You’ll be able to enjoy the view from all areas of the house – the kitchen and living room look out across the farm to the tropical mountain, and each bedroom has large picture windows. Our fully-equipped kitchen is a great place to cook your own meals, or enjoy traditional Costa Rican meals cooked by our neighbors from the local community and delivered to you.

Relax on the wraparound covered patio in one of the hammocks or rocking chairs, and make sure to say hello to the goats, sheep, and pigs who may wander up the hill to the fence looking for a tidbit of extra food. You’re sure to see a variety of wildlife while taking in the surrounding view, and will love the vibrant sunsets in this tropical paradise.

The farmhouse is just two minutes walking distance from the river, and our guests love spending time exploring the river in addition to the various trails that run throughout our farm and surrounding forest. We have a variety of animals on our sustainable farm, including rescue dogs and cats, donkeys, horses, cows, water buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, geese, and chickens. We grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, and encourage our guests to try the fresh mangoes and starfruit that grow throughout our property. We also encourage our guests to join us in learning about our farm work, and are happy to have your company when collecting fresh eggs or taking a horseback riding tour around the farm.

This is a working sustainable farm in rural Costa Rica, meaning that your stay with us will be close to nature and certainly a unique adventure-- please consider this before you book a farmstay with us, as this experience is not for all travelers. If you are looking for luxury accommodations or a place without bugs and critters, this is not the place to stay. If you are looking for a chance to reconnect with nature and experience authentic Costa Rican beauty, this will be the highlight of your trip! Our farm animals are very friendly, especially our dogs and cats, and they may follow you around when you adventure through the farm or go for a swim in the river.

We provide guests with the option of ordering homemade meals that are delivered straight to your doorstep! Please arrange with us ahead of time if you would like meals (breakfasts, lunches, and/or dinners) prepared throughout your stay.

Lovely rustic rural stay within driving distance of Monteverde
We enjoyed staying at the farm with our two kids while exploring the Monteverde area. The house was simply, but artistically decorated with natural log-plank furniture and murals of local wildlife. The farm dogs made friends with our kids, even our son who tends to be scared of dogs! Yes, it was rustic, but clean and welcoming! The open-to-the-outdoors "windows" are not uncommon and were just fine for us. Stuart communicated well with us before and during our stay, giving us a tour of the farm, sharing fruit and sugar cane with us, teaching our son how to make flying airplanes from one of the local plants and recommending a place to go horseback riding. The horseback ride to the thermal pool was one of our kids favorite things we did in the area. The location is quite rural, with true grocery stores found closer to Monteverde. We took advantage of having a dinner brought in by a neighbor and it was good with generous servings. We also ate breakfast at Om Cafe in Guacimal, which is affiliated with the farm, and it was delicious! The owner, Veronica, was lovely to chat with and connected us with a local artist who creates wonderful wood sculptures. She also gave suggestions for areas to explore right around Guacimal that we wish we'd had more time to explore. We enjoyed this house and would visit again, but we might look into their other property if we want to visit Monteverde for multiple days to avoid repeating that drive every day! Thanks for a great stay!

Animal lovers paradise
My family of 5 and 2 friends stayed here a week. We all fit. The kids loved feeding compost to the friendly farm animals and gathering citrus fruits and sugar Cane. They also loved the friendly farm dogs that followed us around. We had a great tour from Stuart when we first arrived and were excited to see a 3 day old foal. Alexander let us roam his farm and trails freely, and we saw way more wild animals here than in monteverde, including coati, Howlers, and an anteater. It's hotter and dryer here, but the river is very close and refreshing.. monteverde is 45 minutes on a beautiful drive and some local hot springs are about 20 minutes. This place is for people who like animals and nature, not for anyone who needs swans made out of towels. The wifi is good, the people are kind, and we had no biting insects, although we saw many amazing insects. We loved our stay here. As for beds, be aware that the bunkbed room is a twin and a full, not 2 twins and a full (it was a bit unclear).

Wooden shack, iron roof, no windows
The owners are lovely, kind people and I hate to write this negative review. The building has no windows, no screens, just open windows and wooden shutters. We checked out after one night and found two lovely modern hotel rooms in Santa Elena that for the same price that included a large breakfast. (Plus modern toilets, maid service etc.) I'm very used to rustic accommodations, but this was poor value for money.

Alexander was born in the San Luis Valley in the Monteverde region and has lived all his life here. He started working when he was 11 years old helping his father herd oxen to take milk to the local cheese factory. At the age of 15, he began working for the Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, then he worked for InBio (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad) researching snails all over Costa Rica, he then worked for ProNativas, an non-profit organization that promotes the use of native ornamental plants as a conservation effort. He believes in changing the world one person at a time, starting with ourselves.

Why they chose this property

You get it all: Nature, the real Costa Rica, farm animals, wildlife, the river, the mountains, great local food and your stay helps us help the community

What makes this property unique

Cozy, three separate bedrooms. The birds come to nest every night so very close you enjoy a display of nature right off your porch. The farm animals come right to the fence for you to feed them. We also have some rescued dogs and cats who love attention. And you can interact with the community and practice your Spanish, yet you are close enough to enjoy all the attractions in Monteverde and other places
