The Absolute Best Place to Stay on the Yucatan Peninsula!
We had a difficult time deciding where to stay on our trip to the Yucatan with so many options- beaches, pyramids, interesting villages, haciendas, cenotes, and bigger cities. We decided to stay with Richard and Leena for two nights because the property looked amazing. We wish we had stayed there the whole week! Hacienda Dzibikak is quite simply spectacular. Richard and Leena have restored the property to its past glory with an impressive combination impeccable attention to detail, exquisite decor, and high end luxury. I have travelled a great deal in Mexico, and stayed at several haciendas. Hacienda Dzibikak is without question my favorite. What we enjoyed the most about our stay was the attention that we received from both Richard and Leena. Richard gave us advice on where to go, when to go, what to avoid, etc. With all of the options in the area it is extremely helpful to have someone who knows share ideas. He also was full of interesting stories about the process of restoring their Hacienda. If you want to explore this part of Mexico, with all it has to offer, Richard can help! Leena was just as kind an hepful as Richard. She was very concerned to ensure that we had great food. One of the people in our party is lactose intolerant, and she made absolutely certain that nothing in our food was going to cause a problem. She worked with her cook to prepare two of the best dinners that we have ever had in Mexico (ask her for the Strawberry Shortcake dessert!), and was even nice enough to share her recipes with us. We really enjoyed everything about our stay here. If you want to explore off the beaten path, but do not want to sacrifice the finer things in life, stay here. You will be glad you did.

Amazing Property! Wonderful Yucatan Experience!
We had a Fantastic Time at Hacienda Dzibikak. We spent one week with two families with small Kids with plenty of room for all of us. The owners are terrific hosts always responsive to all our needs. There were sure all our requirements were fulfilled. Cook was included in our stay, she prepared very good Traditional Yucatecan Food. Kids had a lot of fun at the pool, the Tree House, Jail, Playground and Tree Swings all over the place and all the spacious gardens where they could play and had a lot of fun. Every room in the property has its own special charm. It is full with books, games, and all you need to entertain. All the rooms are very comfortable and spacious. Each has a fantastic bathroom and huge walk in closets. There are Hammocks by the pool which are fantastic to lounge or have a Nap. Its location is ideal, as it is conveniently located 10-minute drive from Merida’s Airport and Periferico, which allows you to make a day trip to all main tourist attractions, like Beaches, Flamingos, Cenotes, Ruins and of course Merida’s downtown all within a relatively short drive. We have previously stayed at other haciendas that have hotel service. Which make you feel that you are at a hotel. But this stay was different and truly reflects what to live at a Hacienda is like. It is very cozy and has that Home feel. It reflects all the hard work of several years of restoring this place, making it a unique and special place. Would recommend to any Couple, Family or group of friends wishing to experience a Hacienda style getaway. We would definitely consider Hacienda Dzibikak for our next trip to Yucatan. It was a terrific experience!

About the host

Hosted by Richard Nichols

Host profile image
After successful careers in London, Lena and Richard happened to spend a few nights in a Yucatan hacienda whilst on holiday in Mexico. Charmed by the experience, they soon decided to buy one themselves, and so began an adventure that has lasted to this day.

Dzibikak, the hacienda they finally settled on, was a long-abandoned, heavily overgrown ruin when they found it. The restoration process took six years, and throughout they were careful to maintain the architectural integrity of the original design, combining it with state-of-the-art mod-cons that all discerning travelers demand.

Since its completion, the hacienda has served as a holiday rental, a venue for weddings and other events, a backdrop for countless photoshoots and as a family home.

Why they chose this property

The Nichols chose this property for a wide variety of reasons.

First and foremost, its location close Merida, means that it is a practical place to stay with easy access to restaurants, shops, hospitals and all the other facilities and amenities the city offers.

Of equal importance is the hacienda´s proximity to the charming and unspoiled beaches of Sisal and Celestun, to the ruins of Uxmal, and to some of the state´s prettiest cenotes.

Last but not least, they were attracted to the hacienda´s long history (there are the remains of an ancient pyramid in the back garden), its architectural splendor, its wide open spaces and its potential as a world-class destination for the more discerning traveler.

What makes this property unique

Unlike many restored haciendas, Dzibikak has served as a family home. This means it has that despite its large size it has a lovely, lived-in feeling that too many holiday rentals lack. The public spaces are all individually and stylishly decorated according to different themes, there are hundreds of unique antiques from the Yucatan and around the world, and all sorts of different toys and games to keep the family entertained.
