About this property

Country Home next to Blow-Me-Down Covered Bridge in the Old Cornish Art Colony!

This beautiful home sits on half an acre next to the Blow-Me-Down Brook & Covered Bridge. It has been deeply loved in our family for over 50 years. Set in an old artists colony, its rustic, beautiful charm is enhanced by antique furnishings and art.
Upon arrival, you’ll immediately fall in love with our beautifully decorated home, nestled in New Hampshire's lush, green landscape and bordered by the tumbling Blow Me Down Brook and Covered Bridge. Indeed, it has been deeply loved by three generations of our family for fifty years! With enough room to accommodate up to 6 guests throughout 1,300 square feet of inviting living space, our rustic home is the perfect size and layout for families, friends or couples looking to explore all this area has to offer. Originally an old horse barn, the converted property now boasts an appealing mix of antique décor, fine artwork and modern-day appliances. We hope you will love our house as much as we do:-)

Look forward to preparing delicious home-cooked meals in the recently remodeled, fully equipped kitchen, stocked with everything you'll need to create mouthwatering meals. Shop at nearby Edgewater Farm Stand in Plainfield and select from an astounding array of organic vegetables to cook up. When you return home from your ventures, unwind and relax while listening to music on the surround-sound system, streaming movies on the Roku player, or curl up by the handsome fireplace with a new read. Have dinner out on the screened porch, and afterwards sip a warm beverage in the cool breeze before retiring to one of the welcoming bedrooms for a peaceful night’s sleep.

While you may consider spending the duration of your getaway lounging inside our comfortable and cozy home, you won’t have to travel far to experience authentic New England life. Just steps from the property, explore the Blow Me Down Covered Bridge, or climb down and wade into the brook for some adventuresome rock hopping. During your stay, be sure to pay a visit to St. Gaudens National Historic Site for a variety of wonderful outdoor concerts and events and learn about Cornish’s history as an art colony. Drive just a few miles down the road to cross the famous Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge spanning the Connecticut River, but be sure to walk your horses or pay 2 dollars fine!

Pull out your bid card at the Smith Auction Gallery in Plainfield and bid on fine antiques at an authentic auction. Venture a little further to the town of Quechee, Vermont for abundant restaurant and shopping destinations, which range from antique stores to elegant glass blowing studios. Hanover, New Hampshire, home to Dartmouth College, is located a short distance away, boasting an endless array of local boutiques and restaurants.

For those looking for outdoor adventure, visit Mount Ascutney for a scenic hike or mountain bike ride with mountain top views of huge stretches of the twin states, or rent a canoe and paddle down the Connecticut River. In the autumn, you'll be in the perfect spot to watch the leaves turn spectacular colors. Venture out to try zip-lining at one of the local resorts. Come winter, you’ll enjoy easy access to NH and Vermont's famous ski resorts such as Sunapee, Killington and Okemo, all an hour or less from our home.

July Stay
This is the second time we stayed here and had an enjoyable, relaxing time with family and friends. Unfortunately the weather didn’t entirely cooperate but we were able to do some hiking and sightseeing as well as participate in the Plainfield 4th of July parade. Fishing is usually excellent on the Connecticut River but the torrential rains prohibited that. Overall it was a great visit and accommodations were very nice. Look forward to returning!

Cornish rural retreat
This was our second stay at this art-filled home. Our first stay was between Christmas, 2022 and the new year. The great thing about staying here in the late spring was use of the screened in room off the living room and being able to take extended walks up into the adjoining hills. It is a beautiful, homey, clean home that we would highly recommend.

I am a Sign Language Interpreter living on an island in Puget Sound near Seattle, WA. I chose to live on this small island because it reminded me so much of my family home in Cornish, NH. I love to live close to nature, garden, bike, ski, and backpack in the stupendous NW mountains.

Why they chose this property

This house has been in my family since 1966, when I was three years old. We spent every summer, weekend, and school vacation there when I was growing up, and love it deeply. My two sisters and I now own it together, and we decided to start to share it with travelers when we're not using it. We hope you will love it as much as we do!

What makes this property unique

Our house is not in a vacation rental locale. It is a real neighborhood surrounded by families we have known our whole lives. Everyone around is friendly; in fact it is a tradition to wave at every passerby whether in a car, on a horse, a bicycle or on foot. The house is next to a brook, which tumbles by and goes under the covered bridge at the edge of our property. You can walk for miles, passing small houses, farms, and woods. After all these years, with all that has changed in the world, we can always count on Cornish to stay as it's been; small, rural, friendly and beautiful.
