About this property

Whalehaven: Kalk Bay apt, spectacular sea and harbour views

The Apartment
Whalehaven, a 76 sqm apartment, is situated in the heart of the village, close and convenient for every jaunt. It's been renovated with style and an eye for detail. It's It's a warm, welcoming space, with seriously impressive views of the sea from the front of the apartment, and mountains from the back. It has oak floors in the living room and marble tiles in the bathroom. The spacious kitchen is designed for proper cooking, with a gas hob, granite work-tops and every appliance you require. The sitting and dining-room furniture is comfortable country-chic with a French corner cupboard housing the TV. There is a desk and chair at which to sit comfortably and continuous wi-fi allows you to work and stay in touch. Beds are made up with 2 down pillows per person, down duvets and crisp white linen The back verandah looks up to the mountain and is equipped with French garden furniture and a gas barbecue for relaxed outdoor wining and dining.

A recently installed continuous power supply inverter and battery will ensure that the lights, TV, WiFi, and fridge/deep freeze always work, despite any electricity supply outages in the area. The power points in the walls, used for lamps or electrical gadgets, will not function during electricity outages, with the exception of two powerpoints in the bedroom which can be used to charge a computer and a mobile phone.

Kalk Bay Village
Kalk Bay is a small, slightly boho village where people come to relax. Part-sleepy fishing village and part-buzzy high street, Kalk Bay’s eclectic mix of historic buildings, cobbled streets, bohemian bric-a-brac shops, vintage bookstores, art and antique galleries, quaint cafés and restaurants, colourful fishing vessels and creative locals are what makes it so charming.

A good morning would likely include a swim in the sea, followed by a scrumptious breakfast, and then a walk on the mountain where the views are breathtaking, ending with a drink in a pub where waves crash on rocks just beyond the window. Come evening, after a gentle snooze and a spot of shopping, eating really well in any one of a dozen different restaurants, all within walking distance, means you've had a healthy, stress-free day!

Kalk Bay is also a great base to return to after a day's outing to easily accessible local treats - Cape Point, Table Mountain, Constantia wine farms, zip-lining, any of 3 local golf courses, surfing or swimming with the penguins in Simonstown.

And then there are the charming, nearby villages, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch or Hermanus, each with its own claim to fame, that will lure you into the spectacular mountains and sophisticated wine farms, or further up the coast where the whales congregate in the winter.

A holiday in Whalehaven and Kalk Bay is refreshing in the deepest sense. It revives your heart, mind and spirit. But isn't that the whole point of a holiday?

Other details to note
A starter pack of the following is available to our guests: coffee, tea, sugar, milk, salt, pepper, dried herbs, tissues, roller towel, cleaning products, washing powder, and dishwasher tablets.

The apartment is on the second floor of an Edwardian building. There are two flights of steps to get to the front door.

Parking is on the street but it is free. At its worst, on a hot, sunny weekend in mid-summer, parking is available within a 5 minute walk. Generally, the walk is closer to 2 minutes!

Regarding security, Kalk Bay is a Special Rates Area which means that we have extra cops on the beat. The village also has security cameras that are monitored 24/7. Security is therefore good but inevitably, not flawless.

Long awaited family visit
We booked this trip in may being very optimistic that Covid would be in the downturn. That’s exactly what happened.

Whalehaven is a little piece of heaven in Kalk Bay
What a pleasure to stay in this beautiful Flat in Kalk Bay, Cape Town South Africa! The flat overlook the harbor with large windows in the lounge that let in the natural light and all of the beauty of the area. Even thought the first day we experienced rain, we were exhausted from traveling in the bush and Whalehaven was a welcome respite! WE enjoyed the comfortable sofas and the view. Beautifully furnished with a full kitchen and brand new appliances. Washer, dishwasher, espresso machine, Whalehaven has it all! The location is conveniently located within walking distance to all local restaurants. The flat has 2 bedrooms on with a queen sized bed and another with 2 twin beds. The beds are comfortable with lovely white fluffy duvets. There is a large freestanding bathtub and shower in the bathroom and the water closet is separated from the shower/tub area. There are several stairs to access the flat so bear that in mind if you have issues with stairs. The flat is secure with a gate a street level and another locked door before accessing the porch. We felt safe at all times. The owners live very close to the flat and met us upon check in. We were able to communicate with they via WhatsApp and text message prior to check in. Our flight was delayed so the ease of communication was helpful in our case. The flat was spotless and is even more beautiful than it appears in photos. I recommend this space without any hesitation! The owners are both lovely and friendly and they have included a list of activities in the area for you as well.

A recommendation with no hesitation
Louise and Guy ensured that our stay was perfect. The apartment was clean extremely comfortable and well apointed. The location in the heart of the village offered easy accessibilty to a variety of great coffee shops and restaurants. Great food, good wine but best of all spectacular views of the bay and harbour. My seat in the window afforded a great opportunity for people watching and taking photographs of the life of the harbour. The first of a two week stay in the area it could not have been a more perfect start. Thank you so much.

And I'd like to welcome you to my home. Cape Town has given my husband and me the most beautiful environment to celebrate the good things in life. We've safely raised a bright and happy family, built a precious circle of fabulous friends, kept ourselves fit by jogging and riding on the mountain, and indulged ourselves in some of the best restaurants on the planet! I'm a coach and Guy is a family doctor. When we travel, which we try to do as often as we can, we like staying in apartments that allow us to experience the unique essence of the place we're visiting. The very best are those that are charming and comfortable too. Whalehaven Kalk Bay will offer you all that and more.
