About this property

Lakefront Cottage on "Quietside" of Mt Desert Island facing Acadia National Park

PLEASE NOTE: Our cancellation policy is different from the one described by Vrbo. We will refund 100% of your deposit at any time, minus a $75.00 re-booking fee, if we can re-rent the same period as your booking to another renter. Please see the sample lease attached below.
Located in Seal Cove on the "quiet " side of Mount Desert Island, this comfortable and completely furnished cottage on Hodgdon Pond Farm welcomes you to Acadia National Park. Located less than five miles from Somesville, in the center of Mt. Desert Island, it provides convenient access to other villages and Park entrances. The cottage has its own dock, a canoe, two kayaks, two stand-up paddle board, and a Walker Bay 8' rowboat with sail kit. The cottage can be rented in conjunction with Cottage 1 (44879), which is about 2/3rds of a football field down the pond. Cottage 2 is slightly larger than Cottage 1 because there is a dormer in the Master Bedroom that offers a view down the pond as well as windows that look up the pond. Because it is also on deeper water, the rent is slightly higher. The two cottages share a sitting and play area with swings and sandbox beside two small ponds as well as a field. We keep the lower section of the shared field mowed and there is a storage box of outdoor games for use in this area..

Occupancy is limited to six people, regardless of age, though there is a futon bed in the sleeping loft. We occasionally allow an additional occupant, but charge a fee of $200 for a seventh person.

Wherever possible, we use 'Green' cleaning products, provide supplies made from recycled paper, low-watt bulbs, and implement other ways to reduce our impact on the environment. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has certified Hodgdon Pond Farm as an 'Environmental Leader.'

A place to decompress
This cabin and the grounds are just magic. When we drove down the long private drive, through the overhanging trees, past the blooming flowers and beautiful ponds, we couldn't wipe the grins from our faces. Our family of five spent a wonderful, relaxing week here. We star gazed while sitting out on the dock, caught frogs, played outdoor games, kayaked, dipped our feet in the pond, saw a glorious sunset rainbow, read books, and reconnected and relaxed. The cabin is older, but it is full of all the creature comforts: clean, soft beds with fluffy pillows and duvet, plenty of very soft towels, a fully stocked kitchen, plenty of reading material for young and old, loads of board games, and two indoor sitting spaces to let folks spread out. All of the windows and doors were newer, so we had an easy time opening them and getting plenty of cool, fresh air when the weather was nice. And there was plenty of firewood for a cozy fire when it went cold at night. I also want to point out that access to the pond was amazingly easy and there were no steep steps, as sometimes you never know from the pictures. We loved this cabin. It was the first time I ever stayed on Mount Desert Island and understood what all of the hype is about.

Views galore
I can’t say enough great things about this property and the owners. Every detail was thought of in this cottage. We have stayed at several different homes and this one by far ranks at the top. The photos don’t do it justice and there is a view from every room. Nothing was skipped on at this property the linens were outstanding, the kitchen pans were almost brand new, there are games, kayaks, lifejackets, fishing poles, and so much more. It’s on the South west side of The island and takes about 20 minutes to get to Cadillac Mountain and 25 minutes to get to downtown bar harbor. But the drive is totally worth the serenity and comforts of this cottage. Hopefully we will come back in the fall at some point and we will definitely stay here again!

Cottage on the pond
We enjoyed our stay at the cottage on the pond, Barbra has thought of everything needed for an enjoyable stay. The cottage was very clean, the location has the opportunity to see Beaver, Otter, Deer and the Bald Eagle that makes their home on the pond. Acadia Park is a short drive away, lots of great hikes and views of the Ocean and Bar Harbor.

Comfortable cottage comes with boats
This is a lovely, comfortable 3 bedroom cottage with water views. We loved having the kayaks and canoe to explore around Hodgdon Pond and we appreciated the quietness of the area - we never saw more than one other boat on the water with us. Homeowner is wonderful - very responsive and a great communicator.

I first went to Mt. Desert Island in 1948 as a summer kid, then lived there year-round from 1979 - to 1995. In 1993 I returned to school, then taught at Northeastern and Lesley Universities, and also worked for the Rural School and Community Trust and KnowledgeWorks Foundation as a policy analyst. I am most at home in rural places and delighted to be living back in Maine again, this time in Camden. I've written 8 books, most of them about education, but more recently wrote my first novel "Islands of Time" set on Mt. Desert and nearby Little Cranberry Island, and the sequel, which will be available soon, "Ben's Story."

Why they chose this property

Hodgdon Pond Farm seemed like home from the moment I read about it in Downeast magazine in 1981. Land facing Acadia National Park on a one-mile lake that you can't see from the main road - what could be better? I love that we share this place with many animals and birds for whom it really is home. I enjoy exploring the many attractions of the Mt. Desert and Downeast Maine, and that at the end of the day when we sit on the dock or swing in the hammock, we feel we've never left the Park.

What makes this property unique

Private, quiet, lots of boats, well maintained, fully furnished, family friendly, but most of all the location right on the water.
