About this property

Charming Villa with Heated Pool & Large Garden near Sandy Beach, Hiking and Golf

Casa da Figueira is a beautiful 3-bedroom traditional Portuguese villa with a large private pool (which can be heated), gorgeous mature tropical gardens, and an extensive fruit tree collection. Discrete housekeeping services, including extremely thorough cleaning between clients, are provided by Amelia. Amelia can also help with any assistance or questions you have during your stay. Please do let us know if you like pool heating for 25 Euros/day. This is normally not needed in June-September if you use the pool cover.

Casa da Figueira is only a 3 min easy walk from a beautiful large sandy beach, a lovely village, excellent restaurants, and several cliffs with nature trails for hiking or biking. It is also located less then 100 m from the famous Rota Vincentina coastal hike and is within an hour drive from 15 wineries and over 40 golf courses. Portugal has been named Europe's 'Best Golf Destination'. It is truly your private paradise!

Casa da Figueira is the perfect vacation resort for a relaxing holiday. A fantastic location for a private honeymoon, a group of friends, or for a family get together. There is plenty of room for children to play and adults to relax and enjoy the pool, garden and orangerie. With 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms the villa can accommodate up to eight people. A crib and high chair are available free of charge if you bring a baby.

Casa da Figueira has nicely decorated living and dining rooms, a fully equipped newly remodeled kitchen, free wireless internet, satellite TV, air-conditioning and heating systems, fireplace, and two covered and one open terrace that provide shade and excellent locations for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Two French doors open from the dining & living rooms to one of the covered terraces and walled-in private pool area which is only for you, your family or friends to enjoy. The pool is 1m deep on the shallow end and 2m 20cm on the deep end. It is over 10 meters long and 5.6 meters wide. The pool can be heated for an extra weekly fee. This might be needed in spring and fall. In the hot summer months the pool stays warm from the sunshine alone. Lazy pool chairs are available for your enjoyment. The front door opens to a covered terrace ideal for breakfast in the sun, connected to a large private courtyard where your children can play all kinds of ball sports. A winding pathway enters a lush enclosed tropical garden with a beautiful fountain and a collection of unique flowers, cacti, and as well as apple and pear trees. The orangerie is in the back of the house and has mature fruit trees such as lemons, mandarins, oranges and persimmon.

The fig tree, which has delicious ripe fruit in the summer, gave the house it's name: Casa Figueira. It stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees and an olive tree. The yard is completely surrounded by a tall beautiful white wall with gates that can be locked. This makes it an ideal location to bring little children who'll have plenty of secure room to play.

The newly renovated kitchen with plenty of counter top space has everything you need to prepare delicious dinners and clean up afterwards. The kitchen opens to a third courtyard with build-in barbecue/fire pit and large dining table.

You are welcome to enjoy all the fruit when it is ripe. In addition we plant an annual herb garden with a wide variety of herbs that the clients are also welcome to use when cooking.

From the front courtyard a 70 meters private walkway brings the guests to a very quite cobblestone road. Walk this secure Parque da Praia narrow road for 250 meters (just a couple minutes) and you'll arrive at the lovely large sandy beach.

The living room is connected to the dining room and has a fireplace that you are welcome to use. There is a terras near the pool and the front door opens to another covered terrace where we love to have our breakfast and see the sun rise over the hill.

There are three bedrooms in Casa Figueira that can accommodate up to 8 people. The main bedroom has a king size bed, a large wardrobe and dresser as well as an antique desk. This bedroom connects into a beautifully renovated private bathroom with a large two-person bathtub and Portuguese sink. A second large bedroom has a traditional double bed as well as a twin-size bed and a large build-in wardrobe. A third bedroom has three twin-size beds and a large build-in wardrobe. It also has a new private sink. This is an ideal room for a family with many children. In addition to the main bathroom which has a bathtub, there are two additional newly renovated bathrooms in the hallway, both with large showers.

Casa da Figueira’s majestic fig tree (which gave the villa its name) stands in the middle of the large yard surrounded by palm trees, an olive tree and many other tropical plants and cacti. A beautiful fountain made of river and beach stones makes this the ideal location for a relaxing afternoon.

The kitchen door opens to a third courtyard with a build-in open fire barbecue pit and a beautiful large table that can seat up to 10 people. Charcoal can be bought at the local Baptista grocery store. Behind the courtyard is the Orangerie with lemon, orange, clementine, persimmon and pear trees. The guests are welcome to enjoy the fruit when it is ripe. In the front of the house we have several large pots with a wide variety of herbs that you are also welcome to use when cooking.

On weekdays Amelia, our amazing housekeeper of over 25 years, provides exceptional daily housekeeping services. Towels are changed twice/week and linen once a week or when you ask. Amelia makes you feel welcome and immediately at home and can help you with your laundry. Amelia will be able to provide friendly help and assistance as needed. Feel free to leave her a tip if happy with her services.

The pool is cleaned on Tuesday afternoon by Ricardo and the yard is taken care of once/week also on Tuesday afternoon by Tandy and his team. So Tuesday afternoon is a good time to make an excursion. Since electricity is expensive in Portugal we unfortunately need to charge extra for pool heating ($180/week) if you want it heated to about 29C. Heating is normally not needed from mid June through mid September if you make sure to close the pool cover when not in use and especially at night when it cools down.

Exclusive Privacy: Casa da Figueira will be only yours for the week: you will be the only tourists there when you rent it, no-one else is allowed on the secure property except with your permission. We do want to keep the property in exceptional condition year-round.

There are plenty of opportunities to dine in Praia da Luz. Our favorite restaurant is called Onda Luz Restaurant and is located right when you enter the village of Luz and walking distance from Casa da Figueira. It looks plain and simple from the outside, but the food is just delicious and the service great. Ask for cataplana. Near the beach in Praia da Luz, also walking distance, try out the renovated 16th century Fortaleza or try one of the many restaurants adjacent to Praia da Luz church or on the beautiful promenade (A Fábrica has delicious food!).

The Algarve is a highly regarded year-round golfing destination, a true golfer’s paradise. There are over 25 fabulous golf courses in the Algarve with others under development. Several of them are close to Casa Figueira. The closest one is just up the road (5min drive) called BoaVista at the entrance of Luz.

The best way to get to Casa da Figueira in Luz is to fly to either Lisbon or Faro (airport in the Algarve). Lisbon is a 3 hour drive to Casa da Figueira and Faro is a 1 hour drive to Casa da Figueira. Both journeys are very scenic and on excellent highways. There is an express bus and a train connection between Lisbon or Faro and Lagos if you prefer. Once in Luz everything is walking distance: beach, shops (local grocery store delivers at home), restaurants, hiking.

Lagos is a historic town about a 10 min drive from Luz. Lagos is accessible from Praia da Luz with an easy 20 min Onda bus ride Linha 4. Lagos has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the city. In fact there are many flee markets where you can find great treasures in towns all across the Algarve. There are also plenty of opportunity to explore the area. Here are a few half or full-day trips that I recommend. Walking or biking west of Praia da Luz on the nature trail adjacent to the cliffs gets you to Burgau, a working fishing village, and Salema with a beautiful beach. You can also make the scenic 2.5 hour hike from Casa da Figueira to Lagos.

Another half day trip is driving West of Praia da Luz towards the “End of the World”. About 30 km past Praia da Luz you reach Sagres with its Fortaleza which School of Vasco da Gama from where the Portuguese discovered half the world. A couple miles past the Sagres Fortaleza is Cape St Vincent which is the most westerly tip of Europe, called the “End of the world”. The coastline running North from Cape St Vincent is undeveloped and wildly beautiful. It faces onto the open ocean with nothing but the Azores between here and the East Coast of the United States.

The Algarve also has many award winning wines. About 15 wineries are located within 1 hour drive from Casa da Figueira. Many of the wineries provide wine making tours and/or wine tasting opportunities. North of the Algarve is Aljentejo, a region with many internationally known wines.

I am looking forward to help you make your holiday at Casa Figueira as wonderful and memorable as possible. We hope you enjoy your stay at Casa da Figueira!

Absolutely Beautiful Property
Where do I start.....this property is amazing. Pictures do not do it justice. The entire place inside and out was spotless, old world charm. The pool area was immaculate and much needed after a long day of exploring. What a treat to pick fresh lemons from the lemon trees right outside the kitchen and bbq in the outdoor grill. Amelia was a delight and took very good care of us. She was lovely! The property is very private, and is a short walk to the beach and numerous restaurants. We have been to many VRBO properties and Sophie is by far the best host we have had. Welcoming, clear property instructions and quick to answer any emails or questions we had. Praia da Luz is a must see and wouldn't be complete without a stay at this spectacular property!!!! Thank you from our group of 6 for making this a very memorable vacation!!

Portugal vacation
This property is amazing. It’s quiet , private and close to everything you need. You can walk everywhere. Amelia is wonderful. We didn’t have a car for most of the time we spent at the house. We rented a car in Luz for 3 days to see the rest of the Algarve. So many restaurants within a five minute walk. We loved our stay and hopefully we will return soon.

Fantastic in every way!
The property is remarkable- perfect location, beautifully maintained gardens, and an amazingly helpful housekeeper. We went over Thanksgiving week and the town of Luz (5 minute walk from house) was ideal - many open restaurants but no crowds. Everyone in our family wants to return.

We were both born in Europe and now live in Boston, MA. Jesus teaches at MIT and Sophie recently retired after several decades in the technology industry. We have 6 grown-up children who still love to come spend time at Casa da Figueira. Sophie's parents bought Casa da Figueira when she was a teenager in the 1970s.

Casa da Figueira is a charming traditional Portuguese villa that has been in our family for 5 decades. We do yearly upgrades and maintenance to keep it in exceptional condition while maintaining the authentic atmosphere. Casa da Figueira is decorated with original art pieces from artists from all over the world. If you enjoy beautiful surroundings, inside and outside, Casa da Figueira is the place to be.

We recently renovated the kitchen and we have renovated the bathrooms, build a beautiful pool and surrounded the large property and tropical yard with a traditional white wall so its safe for children to run around. Each January we do significant maintenance so please do let us or Amelia know if something needs to be upgraded.

Keeping a traditional Portuguese home in exceptional condition requires on-going maintenance work. Our own six children, now young adults, have enjoyed coming to Casa da Figueira at all ages. We are looking for individuals or families who will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do and who can help cover the costs of maintaining this beautiful exclusive property and keeping Amelia, our truly amazing housekeeper who has worked for my family for over 25 years, employed. We are very much looking forward to hear from you. A comprehensive folder with information about Casa da Figueira, Praia da Luz and the Algarve is available for your use. Please do add your personal comments and suggestions so our other clients can benefit from your experience.

We hope you will enjoy Casa da Figueira as much as we do. Looking forward to hear from you!

Sophie Vandebroek & Jesus del Alamo (Casa da Figueira owners)

Why they chose this property

Casa da Figueira, a traditional Portuguese villa with heated private pool and tropical gardens is paradise for us. Casa Figueira is a 2 min walk to a safe and large sandy beach. The Casa is located in Parque da Praia, the "beach park" build in the 1960s. In fact, you can hear the waves while enjoying breakfast on one of the three terraces. A 70 m cobblestone walkway gets you to a small street that is just one block from the beach.

The Algarve has 40 fabulous golf courses, with the Boa Vista Course just 5 min from Casa da Figueira and 15 wineries. The villa is also one block from a nature trail that goes up the cliffs and is ideal for jogging, walking, biking or to witness amazing sunrises or sunsets.

The eastern limit of the beach of Luz is marked by the famous “black lava rock” noticeable since all the other cliffs are golden orange.

Praia da Luz retains the charm and character of a traditional Portuguese village yet offers excellent facilities to complement the safe and sandy beach. The narrow village streets meander up from the beach, past white-washed houses, an 16th century Fortaleza turned into a romantic restaurant and pretty yellow church offering many different religious services, to the village center with many restaurants, grocery stores, and a few pottery stores. The Algarve’s long Moorish control, its Mediterranean climate, and its abundance of fine sandy beaches endow the Algarve with a unique character. Separated from the rest of Portugal by rolling hills, Algarve, the southernmost province, with its abundance of sun, sardines and tuna, is an ideal vacation location.

The closest city to Praia da Luz is Lagos. While Lagos is a very historic town, it has a refreshing, relaxing charm with lots of cozy restaurants, many bars, live music, local art shops and an active marina. A daily fresh fish market, weekly vegetable market and monthly flee market provide unique charm to the town.

What makes this property unique

To answer this question, here is great feedback we received from one of our recent clients: 'We had such an incredible time. Your villa is charming, and obviously taken care of with a lot of love and attention. Amelia was wonderful, very helpful, and very patient with our questions. We walked everywhere, took tons of pictures, the views were stunning, and ate at pretty much all the places you mentioned. My husband went diving in Lagos, and all the guys went golfing up the road. We found the bakery and the soup shop. Quejadas were declared our breakfast food. We took a ride down to the fort in Sagres, and spent a day in Tavira exploring. That was an incredible crash course in history. We took plenty of pictures of the bridges, fort and churches. We climbed the mini mountain behind Casa da Figueira and walked all the way around it. That was more than enough exercise for me, but would not have missed it because the views and changing colors were perfect. By mid week, the guys were checking out the 'for sale' signs and comparing prices. We met all kinds of people, who were very kind. Needless to say we are not an overly quiet group, animated conversation being the norm, so at all the restaurants we went to, the owners came over and talked with us. Lots of stories were shared, and lots of advice was given. We were very surprised to find the beach being dog friendly which was great. We also had a person at the beach who made sand sculptures every day. There are so many other things we experienced on this trip that I am sure I am forgetting. In short, I have never had such a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable vacation in my life. We all had a wonderful time and would consider doing it again.' - Janie, Ed & Travis Gschrey, New York State, USA Also very unique are Casa da FIgueira's tropical gardens and many mature fruit trees (for you to enjoy).
