About this property

Isle of Colonsay Scottish Island Holiday, Southern Hebrides, Scotland

Highfield has wonderful panoramic views to the Atlantic Ocean and a garden of a third of an acre to enjoy. There are 5/6 bedrooms accommodating 2 to10 people as well as a modern fitted kitchen and two living rooms.

Colonsay was recently named in the top 10 “Under-The-Radar Islands of The World” It has glorious golden beaches (Kiloran Bay has been voted 2nd Best Beach in the UK) It is also home to golden eagles, wild goats, colonies of seals and a huge range of flora and fauna. Amenities include a hotel, pub, café, bookshop and a local village shop. Many possible activities include walking, beachcombing, drinks at the pub, kayaking, fishing, golf, cycling, eating out at the hotel or café, fast boat trips and of course most importantly relaxing away from it all.

Most people reach Colonsay by a wonderful 2.5 hour ferry journey from the town of Oban on the mainland of Scotland. The dramatic sea route takes you past many islands including Mull, Seil and Jura and once on the ferry your holiday really starts as you leave the mainland behind. The island can also be reached from a second ferry port called Kennacraig and by air and fast boat from near Oban. Bear in mind that unless you are prepared to cycle everywhere it is essential to bring a car with you, as although the total road mileage is quite small there is no regular public transport available on Colonsay.

To maximise the panoramic views to the Atlantic Ocean, Highfield is an 'upside-down' house. The master bedroom with en suite bathroom, living room and large fitted kitchen are all upstairs which means the spectacular views out to sea and over the island can be enjoyed from these rooms and from two balconies attached to the living room and kitchen. Being an upside down house, one couple can comfortably rent the upstairs accommodation as a 'studio' type home (at a discount outside of the summer high season) or if there are more in the group then we can open up the additional bedrooms needed downstairs and price according to the number of guests.

Downstairs there are a further 4 bedrooms plus an additional living room which is perfect for kids to relax in and play games. In total the house has three double bedrooms, one twin bedroom, and one bedroom with a single plus a bunk bed and there is also a sofa bed in the downstairs living room. There are a total of five bathrooms plus a porch and a utility room with washing machine.

The two living rooms seat 14 people between them. 10 upstairs and 4 downstairs. There is a washing machine and an additional fridge/freezer in the utility room and the kitchen has a double oven with 6 electric rings.

The garden extends to one third of an acre and looks over the community of Kilchattan to the Atlantic where you can watch the sun set over the Ocean. The garden is mainly grassed with guests children in mind and the next door neighbours are a field of Hebridean sheep! There is plenty of room for several cars to park and further views are over the crofts and hills that make up Kilchattan.

Surpassed expectations!
The photos don’t do it justice! Perfect house for group of 3 families with one dog. Big grounds with grass and large driveway. The sit-outery was off limits due to the wind but has great views. Inside Plenty of space and views in all directions. Porch has lots of room for wet clothes and boots. Lots of storage in kitchen and fridge space which is important when catering for 12. Host sent though lots of information ahead of the stay and we had a great time Exploring the island. Kids and adults loved exploring the beaches and crabbing from Scalasiag pier. Woods and gardens at Colonsay House great to explore and lots of wildlife to spot. All round great house for a group and Colonsay like a mini Scotland, perfect and hope to return.

Elgin friends in May 22
Highfield is a lovely house, perfect for eight of us (4 elderly couples). We cycled, walked, kayaked, golfed, ate in and out, crashed an American wedding on Kiloran beach, and generally had a great time. Note: if you are walkingvthe Strand to Oronsay, either wear wellies, or be prepared to get wet feet!

Very pleasant despite the weather
The house is great, it met the needs of a very varied group and let us have much needed and long overdue family time together. Absolutely stunning beaches minutes away. The house is very well equipped and felt like a home away from home. We feel that Colonsay will get better with every visit.
