About this property

Beautiful Kealakekua Bay Home With Private Pool & Tropical Garden

The Pagoda House is a beautiful, almost ocean-front traditional Hawai'ian screen home with a private pool and lush tropical garden overlooking Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary - widely considered some of the best snorkeling in all of Hawai'i. The home's open-air design (there are no glass windows on the front of the home or on the sides— just screens) makes it feel like an oceanside treehouse. We are just across a one-lane road from the water. The home is filled with the sound of waves and birdsong and has stunning views of the Bay, the surrounding tropical gardens, and the adjacent soaring cliffs.

Pagoda House's layout makes it especially perfect for extended family (or two families) traveling together -- it has two ocean-facing master bedrooms each with their own ensuite bathroom, and two additional garden-view guest bedrooms that share a bathroom. The upstairs master bedroom, bath and private sitting area cover the entire top floor of the home and has ocean and cliff views. The upstairs master shower overlooks a giant monkeypod tree. The home is surrounded by a large and beautifully-manicured tropical garden, which makes it feel like you and your group are on vacation at your own beach resort.

The main living area is large and open-plan with high ceilings, and a gourmet kitchen perfect for cooking and socializing with family and friends. Even though the home is open-air, it is designed to stay cool whatever the weather -- the offshore breezes come through and there are ceiling fans throughout the home. Air conditioning is unnecessary (but we have one anyway in the fourth bedroom only — that bedroom does have windows that close).

We are one of the few homes in the area with a swimming pool -- it is surrounded by palm trees, plumeria, orchids, hibiscus and other tropical flowers and vines. The pool and outside dining area have tiki torches for fire-lit evening BBQs and swims. There is also an outdoor shower in our large and private back yard for rinsing off after trips to the beach or ocean paddles. Depending on the season, fresh starfruit, mango, passionfruit or bananas hang from the vines and trees.

One of my favorite things about the house is that it has plenty of places to gather with family and friends (the spacious and high ceiling'ed open-plan living / kitchen / dining area, or the pool and patio area/ the garden) but there are plenty of places to retreat for some alone-time too.

We are located directly across the street and down three lots from the Napo'opo'o wharf, where most kayak companies put in. No need to drive to the ocean -- you are there! Spinner dolphins frequent our bay and it is just a short kayak or SUP paddle over to the Captain Cook monument, which marks the spot where he was killed by native Hawai'ians in 1779. The stunning and sacred Kealakekua cliffs (Pali Kapu O Keōua) -- where the bones of Hawai'ian royalty (ali'i) traditionally were buried -- are visible from much of the home -- but especially from the upstairs master sitting area. Kealakekua Bay State Historic Park is only a few minutes walk away, as is charming Manini Beach Park. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Park, local favorite snorkel spot "Two Step," the Painted Church, Big Island Bees, and Kona coffee farms / tours are all within 8-10 minutes drive. We are 12 miles from Kailua-Kona and 85 miles from Volcanoes National Park.

Little piece of paradise
Our group of 8 had a wonderfully relaxing stay at the Pagoda House. The pool (which was better than in pictures) was a bonus and one could walk to beautiful vistas. The gardens were lovely. It was in a more secluded area but we were able to explore different parts of the island by car. Lots of space and overall the Hawaiian style house was a different but a cool experience.

You just don't need anything more....
This is the kind property I selfishly don't want to write about as when it gets popular, I'll never get to use it again. There are numerous nooks to relax in this open and airy abode with ample views of the ocean. Fruit trees supplied us with papaya, "house gekkos" did the exterminating. Bird song woke us in the morning, frog peepers serenaded us at night. We grilled, we swam, we read, we walked. It's a luxuriously rustic home close enough to everything for the perfect getaway. Mine and my best friend's family stayed for 9 days and had plenty of room and privacy and were able to enjoy meals together and everything the property offers. The owner got back to all our queries promptly. I sincerely hope we're able to get back there soon. But please don't tell anyone else about it!

Fabulous stay!
We absolutely loved our stay at the Pagoda House. Plenty of space for our family to spread out. The open-air home was comfortable, and we LOVED the birds and frogs all day and all night! Pool and grounds were beautiful. So much to do in the Captain Cook area, but also very accessible for a day trip to Volcanoes NP. Our only regret was that we did not stay on the Big Island, and in this home, for our whole trip. Feel in love with Hawai'i here, and we will be back!

Big island vacation
The house was as described. Walking distance to great snorkling. The pool was great to relax in the afternoons. Friendly geckos greeted us in the house. The open air kitchen was fantastic. We greatly enjoyed our trip.

Perfect house to share
We had a great time at pagoda house. The kids loved the pool and fruit trees- the resident duck was a hit! The beach is a short walk across the street- view was gorgeous! There were a few more lizards than we anticipated and they popped up and made us jump a few times- but not disturbing. Parking was easy and the house had beach chairs plenty of towels and basic items (oil, vinegar, seasonings, all dishes….) beautiful home for an amazing trip!

About the host

Aloha! We are Mary (mom) and Jaya (daughter) and we are blessed to split our time between two lovely islands: we live on a farm on Bainbridge Island in Washington and rent our home on the Big Island when we aren't there.

When we travel ourselves we love to stay somewhere that is beautiful but not necessarily fancy -- ideally, somewhere that reflects the essence of the place we are visiting and makes us feel like we've truly lived in and experienced the place -- instead of being isolated in a tourist-filled, generic resort. Our hope is to create that same type of experience for you at the Pagoda House.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with our Pagoda House the first minute we laid eyes on it. It is the essence of all the things I love about the Hawaiian Islands. We love the open air design of the house and the way it brings in the sound of ocean waves and tropical birds. We love that it feels like a giant, well-furnished tree-house. We love the open air shower upstairs (and the outdoor shower in the back-yard). We love the half-acre+ tropical gardens with mangos, bananas and tropical flowers blooming everywhere. We love that the house is renovated 'just enough' (high quality appliances and everything up to date, but not overly-fancy -- you can put your feet up and relax).

We love that plumeria flowers fall into the pool while we are swimming in it and that the birds and geckos come to visit us there. We love the sleepy, one-lane road qualities of the neighborhood, and that it is a mix of local families and vacation rentals. We love that we don't have to get in the car to dive into the pristine waters of the Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary -- it's just across the one lane road and is widely considered some of the best snorkeling in the islands. We love our neighborhood beach park and community garden. Life moves a little slower down here (but it's still pretty easy access to everything up in Kona when you need something ... we are only about an 18-20 minute drive to the Keauhou Shopping Center).

What makes this property unique

The resorts (and big-box stores) of Kailua-Kona are only a short drive away but, at Pagoda House, you feel a world away. Our four-mile road down from the main highway protects us from the hustle and bustle. Just sleepy nature and ocean here and, at night, a sky filled with stars. You can get to the 'resorty' areas very easily. But you aren't going to see any of that down here.

There is a reason they call this 'the Big Island' -- you could fit every other Hawaiian Island within its borders. But, with a little planning, almost everything this spectacular and diverse island has to offer is a day trip from Pagoda House. It's just 85 miles around the south tip of the Island to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and about the same distance North and East to the Waipi'o Valley. This island is unique in that it has 10 of the world's 14 climate zones. You don't like the weather where you are? Drive somewhere else! ;-)
