About the host

My wife Barb and I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We love to travel and Costa Rica is one of our favorite places in the world. I was the President and CEO of a mid-size information technology company for 18 years before I retired in April, 2015. In July of 2015 we purchased the El Castillo Hotel and Azul Mediterranean Restaurant. A lot of people said I was crazy buying a hotel in another country without any hotel and restaurant experience. They were probably right, as it was truly an emotional buy based on passion. But it turned out to be a great experience and has brought a lot of joy to my wife, children, and two granddaughters. We have fun visiting, reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, and best of all, getting to know the staff.
Why they chose this property
I originally found El Castillo a few years back when I was looking for a hotel to purchase for our employees and their families. The idea was to have four employees and their families stay in luxury in a location they might not have been able to afford on their own for three weeks a year. The employees would work and not be charged for vacation time. What an incredible way for everyone to get a chance to know each other better and build trust. In the end it did not work out to purchase the hotel for the company. However, about the time I was going to retire I noticed that El Castillo was still on the market. I was so excited that I went to Costa Rica a few months later with my son and bought it.
What makes this property unique
The initial attraction to El Castillo was the magnificent structure and the dramatic view over the infinity pool of Garza Island and the Pacific Ocean. It is fun watching visitors walk into the hotel for the first time and see their jaw drop. But it is much more than the view that makes El Castillo special – it is having some of the best restaurants in Costa Rica within 5 to 10 minutes and having endless outdoor adventure activities close by. It is also our newest addition - an exclusive island beach. Combine all of this with the most caring, interesting, thoughtful staff I have ever encountered and it creates a magical experience for our guests. The hotel exists for one reason – “you” our guests. Thank you for considering El Castillo.
