About this property

Cabin Beneath the Big Sky

This comfy cabin, built in the 1930's in the Beaverhead National Forest for family recreation was forced to move in 2010 to the Ruby Valley. Grandson and great grandson moved the cabin rather than burn it down. It retains its rustic exterior with logs milled in the valley in those early years. Inside, however, the cabin is fully modern, well insulated, nicely decorated and perfect for making more family memories.
Tucked into a 3 acre ranch homesite, the cabin is just one mile from Ruby Island (a Ruby River fishing access) in the heart of some of Montana’s best fishing. It also offers an easy drive to the Madison, Jefferson, Beaverhead and Big Hole Rivers. Apart from fishing, the area offers bird and big game hunting, birding, hiking, skiing, horseback riding and gem hunting.
The cabin has a King sized bed in the great room and a trundle bed in the bedroom so it's perfect for a couple and two children or a couple and one other adult. The bathroom has an excellent shower, and the kitchenette offers a cooktop, toaster oven, microwave, coffee pot, and a double sink. The large deck is furnished with patio furniture and a gas grill. Trees to the North create privacy on the deck yet great mountain views abound in every direction.
The cabin sits at an angle that insures privacy on the shared homesite. The owners live to the east past the horse corral, garden, and copse of trees. Another home is to the west with landscaping demarking property lines.
A Weimaraner and a Turkish Boz (an extremely large dog) live on and protect the property. They are friendly and enjoy having company,
Irrigation, haying, cattle drives and other ranch work occur within the view shed as the cabin is part of a ranching operation.

our stay
Beautiful setting, and cottage. Could not have asked for more. Will stay there on our next trip. The owners were wonderful as was the local residents that we were able to chat with at the local bar. Our daily and evening visitor "Grizz" made us feel at home as did Julie and Dave. Would highly recommend this beautiful property to visit. Thank you again

A beautiful little spot
We really enjoyed our time at Julie's cabin. We went to Yellowstone several days, and although it's a bit of a drive, it's a pretty drive. Griz and Junie Bug are so sweet, and we enjoyed watching the horses too. Montana is such a beautiful state. We also enjoyed the cooler weather. Hopefully, we can come back one day.

Peace And Quiet
If you want peace and quiet this is the place. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We received a recommendation from a friend who stayed here and we are so glad we did. Easy booking, responded quickly, and very accommodating when we needed to change our dates. We truly got the Montana experience!!!

About the host

Host profile image
I was raised on a ranch in the Ruby Valley and, likewise, my husband and I raised our family here. For 26 years I taught English, journalism, speech, etc. in Sheridan High School, but am now retired and enjoying winters in Mexico.

Why they chose this property

The cabin was built by my husband's grandfather in the 1930's for family recreation. Husband and son rescued the cabin in 2010 when the Forest Service threatened to burn it down.

What makes this property unique

Absolute privacy and quiet except for bird song and coyote harmony .
Lovely views of the valley and beautiful sunsets.
Easy access to fishing and hunting
Perfect morning walks or afternoon hikes
Country living
