About this property

Characterful 18th century cottage in Bridport close to the Jurassic Coast.

The cottage is hidden away down a quiet lane in a peaceful location in the heart of the thriving market town of Bridport. The location is close to all amenities, shops, eateries, pubs, art deco Electric Palace and Bridport Arts Centre. Bucky Doo Square is a couple of minutes walk from the cottage, where musicians perform, as people visit the street markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, selling everything from bric-a-brac to street food.

Recently refurbished the stone cottage is light, cosy and comfortable. After coming through the front door you enter a porch for coats and shoes and containing a cabinet with cottage and tourist information and games for the use of guests.

The living room/diner contains a wood burner, comfortable seating and a range of equipment you might expect. French doors lead to a sheltered stone walled courtyard which can accommodate one car and has a rear wrought iron gate for vehicular access. A table and chairs are situated in the courtyard for al fresco dining.

A small but well equipped kitchen leads off from the living room.

On the first floor of this 3 storey cottage there is a bathroom with a bath and shower. There is a step down into the bathroom. The large Master bedroom has a standard feature double bed. The second bedroom on this level has adult sized wooden bunk beds.

On the second floor there is a beamed, attic bedroom containing a standard double bed. Far reaching views across nearby hills and the towns characterful rooftops can be had on the east and north side of this room. There is a low point on the stairs leading up to the attic bedroom.

The property has full central heating throughout if required.

There is always a lot happening in Bridport at any one time. As well as the twice weekly markets there is a monthly farmers' market, a monthly vintage market and a regular artisan market held in the arts centre. Bridport has a free museum which has a significant section informing you of the town's rope making industry and history. There are many festivals throughout the year including themes such as literary, film, rope, food/drink and the unique hat festival.

The beaches and harbour at West Bay ( of "Broadchurch" fame) is approximately 1.5 miles from the cottage. Either a few minutes drive or a lovely (45 minutes approx) walk through the town orchard and along the river Brit. In general the cottage is a good base for walkers and cyclists. Many varied day routes and destinations are possible along the coast or through beautiful countryside. You could easily spend a week or two and not use a car if you wanted to.

The surrounding area is largely unspoilt with several areas owned by the National Trust. The coast has World Heritage status and many literary connections including Thomas Hardy. Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Abbotsbury, Dorchester and Weymouth are all within easy reach. Activities including fossil hunting, fishing, sailing and golf are all possible. There are many places of interest to visit including a swannery, children's farms and beautiful sub tropical gardens open to the public.

Wonderful little cottage
We spend 9 days in this wonderful cottage. The hosts were very kind and helpful. The region is beautiful. Most important shops, pubs and restaurants are in walking distance. Bridport is a very nice small city and a good start for several trips to countryside or Jurassic coast. Many thanks to Susan

Exactly what we hoped for!
This cottage was both quiet and perfectly located to most of what Bridport has to offer -- which is a lot! The hosts were welcoming and very helpful. We enjoyed eating at the historic Bull Hotel restaurant just yards away. It was a memorable trip, and I hope to visit again one day!

The cottage was cosy and comfortable right in the centre of town. The only noisy night was the first night was when we could hear some rowdiness from the pub. Apart from that it was really quiet. The parking was tight but manageable with our Toyota Yaris. We really enjoyed our stay and would come again.

Why they chose this property

We bought the cottage as a holiday home and fell in love with the area, so we moved here. We have had many guests at the cottage, who have loved their time here, so we decided to let the cottage out for others to enjoy. Bridport has a thriving art community and there are pieces of art throughout the cottage produced by local artists. We provide lots of information at the cottage for you to view on all the attractions in the area, many of which we have enjoyed ourselves.

What guests have said, taken from our visitors book:

"Thank you so much for letting us share this fabulous place. The cottage is wonderful and we love Bridport" K.B. and family.

"The cottage is well equipped and cosy, in a lovely place of Bridport town, lots of fab cafes and restaurants. Thank you for letting us stay we will be back." M and R

"The cottage has been an ideal base for our adventures, cosy and comfortable, with everything we needed-even Monopoly! Thank you." M and family.

"We have had a brilliant week down here. The cottage is beautiful, so cosy and private. What a lovely area too. A huge thanks" J S

"Another lovely stay in the cottage . The cottage is well equipped and maintained. Enjoyed the lovely walk to West Bay along the path by the river. We don't want our stay to end. Thanks Susan we will be back again soon". C & R

What makes this property unique

The beauty of this cottage is that it is in a tucked away peaceful location but so close to all Bridport has to offer. Built in the 18th century, it is surprisingly spacious and has lots of interesting features as well as a warm feel . The enclosed courtyard garden has an historic stone wall. As we live locally we can be contacted if you have any concerns and have lots of local knowledge.
