Messina Hof Hill Country: President Cottage

Indulge your inner history lover when you stay at this elegant Fredericksburg cottage, a wine country retreat that offers beautiful presidential-themed decor, a nearby Messina Hof tasting room, and an unbeatable location along the Highway 290 Wine Trail.

Whether you're a wine enthusiast or a lover of the Texas Hill Country outdoors, you'll enjoy that this cabin is less than half a mile from 4.0 Cellars, Grape Creek Vineyards, and Mandelbaum Cellars; nine miles from Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site; and 27 miles from Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

The living room is lofty and spacious, with tall exposed beam ceilings, rich leather furnishings, and decor that pays tribute to past presidents. Central heating and air-conditioning will help keep you comfortable as you browse the WiFi or relax on the sofa in front of the cable TV.

The wet bar features a sink, a microwave, a gourmet coffee maker, and a small refrigerator, perfect for storing a few bottles of Texas wine. Please take note, however, that there is no kitchen - but you'll hardly need one when you're dining at Otto's and the Cabernet Grill, two of the local favorites.

After a day spent strolling the historic sites, shops, and the seasonal farmers market in downtown Fredericksburg, return home to share forest views and a bottle of wine with your loved one on your very own private deck.

The large bedroom features an abundance of sunlight, polished floors, and a bed with a vine-wrapped canopy. The full bathroom offers a spacious walk-in shower.

In addition to having the Messina Hof tasting room just a few feet away, guests at this wonderful cottage will enjoy easy access to the best of the Texas wine country. Guests interested in wine tours will find numerous other wineries just a short walk or drive away.

You'll also find more than 80 sites of interest in the Fredericksburg National Historic District - as well as delectable bistro dinners at Vaudeville right in town.

Come and experience this wonderful blend of history and beauty in the heart of Texas Hill Country!

Look around the location before booking
The cottages are very nice, quality furnishings and quite. We arrived on a Monday and learned quickly that most places, to include the Messina Hof Winery are closed. Dinner options were limited and not many places will deliver to that location. I wasn’t able to find a guide in the cottage for local amenities but they did include a nice basket full of snack food items that I assumed was the self serve breakfast (cereal but no milk, granola bars, pretzels). I thought I read in the listing that a bottle of wine or champagne was included with the room but it wasn’t. There was two 12oz bottles of water in the mini fridge and that was nice, the tap water had an odd taste to us and didn’t work well with the coffee we had either. The cottages are located behind the tasting room and that appeared to be the back of the property, the surrounding area is not inviting for those interested in walking around the property and there isn’t a set up for outdoor cooking unless you bring wood for the shared fire pit near the parking area. You can walk to adjacent wineries but at your own risk, there’s no established walking path and the winery is right next to the highway. The process for getting linens was making a request 24 hours in advance so we didn’t think there was a caretaker near the establishment or it’s someone who takes care of multiple sites. Because we were only staying 2 nights we didn’t bother making calls to anyone to ask questions or request coffee creamer, milk, more water, etc. We did book a wine tour with a company from Fredericksburg, there was an additional $45 pick up fee based on our location but that’s how we got familiar with the area. The tasting room at Messina Hof was open when we returned and we could buy some appetizers. The servers recommended a couple food establishments that might deliver but unfortunately only one we called would and there was a extra charge associated. We bought a couple different appetizers for dinner and went to a fast food restaurant in the morning for breakfast. We felt stuck and somewhat isolated there so this wasn’t a good fit for us, I would recommend to others that they look at the operating hours of the businesses around this location and maybe plan on doing a grocery run or bring food/water.

Charming Cottage
The space was lovely but overall, not what we expected. We did not receive our complementary bottle of champagne as promised. Upon arriving, we found an untidy nightstand with leftover crumbs, well-worn towels in the bathroom, and only two hangers in the closet. For a bespoke establishment like Messina Hof, the amenities were not on brand. Despite this, we did enjoy our stay and of course adore Messina Hof Winery - one of the best in Texas!

Nice bed, no breakfast.
If you a just looking for a place to sleep the cabin is nice and a good location. There was zero daily service expected in a B&B. We received a bag of gas station snacks labeled “continental breakfast” and was only given 4 coffee pods and 4 towels for 2 people over 4 days/3nights. They should change the name to Manor Haus B.
