About this property

Traditional farm cottage with private pool in stunning and secluded location

Approached through woodland, nestling in a valley which enjoys stunning views of foothills and coast, the house bursts with charm. Retaining many of its original features, carefully restored and enjoyed by the family over 30 years, there is everything here for the complete natural healthy holiday; organic food is almost impossible to avoid, water is from our underground spring. No light at night in the valley apart from the moon and the stars, no sound but the wildlife. These mountains are Algarve's best kept secret. The house is a typical quinta surrounded by fertile farmland. Footpaths and lanes lead from the house into the forests & foot hills. This is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. At the far side of the mountain eagles circle overhead and there are views as far as Lisbon over a vast expanse of foothills There is another world here. People have lived and farmed here all their lives. The landscape is strange and beautiful. Sunset best viewed with a bottle of wine.

Activity and cooking holidays:

In Autumn Winter and Spring we offer some bespoke activity, cooking and creative holidays for you, your family or friends . We team up with a local activity company to offer a menu including guided walks, downhill cycling, canoeing and a new which is visiting local producers in hidden mountain locations collecting food from the mountain, making bread in the village square and cooking lessons at the quinta. It is a unique and unforgettable way to celebrate a special occasion or get together with friends and family. Have the place to yourself and everyone can do as much or as little as they like. Just contact me and we can talk about what you would like to do .

We regularly have the whole house decorated inside and out and work hard in the garden to be ready for each season. It can be such beautiful weather here in the low swasons and in the Spring there are flowers everywhere so come and enjoy a spring break.
We are always very popular with honeymooners and families with children who enjoy the opportunity to spend days at home by the pool and exploring the garden It is home to us and our children, so there are boxes of toys and books. There is a dining area outside the kitchen with a granite table and barbecue. The swimming pool and garden at the side of the house reached by a level path. This is particularly useful for people with small children as access to the area can be more easily monitored
Around the pool area are wooden sunbeds with mattresses, chairs and an umbrella. The pool is 5m x 10m, there are wide steps for easy access. The rest of the property is terraced with a variety of olive trees, fruit trees and wild flowers. There are stunning views from the higher terrace to the foothills and coast. You are welcome to help yourself to fruit from the trees.

Our nearest restaurant (our favourite) is 15min walk across the valley, a magical walk home by moonlight.

Real Portugal: This is authentic Portugal, and Monchique is a small working town. There are few tourists: those who visit come for lunch and to gaze at the view. It has a good number of restaurants and bars, banks, food shops and a market. Produce has travelled metres rather than miles. Vegetarians, vegans and omnivores are all delighted. There is an attractive square, a park and public swimming pool and craft shops. Staying in Monchique is a very different experience from life on the coast. The pace is slow and you will feel you have stepped back in time. Walking the footpaths around the town you will see a forgotten culture. You are likely to be included in whatever festivities are taking place, be it an event at the church, a pig roast or music in the square. There are weekly and monthly markets . It is possible to use the house as part of a larger group and in the past have made arrangements for other houses in the area.

Christmas, New Year and Easter: a chance to refresh your spirit. Christmas in Monchique is very simple. Festivities only begin a few days before. Celebrations take place at home and at the church. Christmas trees are in all the restaurants and houses.
If you wish to have a simple Christmas, Quinta da Relva is perfect. You can cut your own fir tree from the grounds and decorate the house with orange branches, light an enormous log fire and enjoy the smell of eucalyptus. and wood smoke. The weather can be bright and sunny and warm in the day but cold at night, so bring warm clothes. At New Year it is possible to go to the coast for the celebrations, or sit on the terrace and watch the firework display, then a New Years Day walk on the west beaches. Easter in Monchique is celebrated at the church and with a procession in the town, flowers decorate the pavements. This is the best time for walking in the forests, mountains and coast. Wild flowers are everywhere. The weather can do anything however, so come prepared.

Nice holiday home
We spent 2.5 weeks in Diana’s holiday home and we really enjoyed the garden and the spacious pool. The house itself is simple equipped and furnished but with comfortable beds (good mattresses, not too soft). We had some issues with the hot water supply since the hot water was coming and going but at the end of the day no big deal. From our point of view a useful improvement would be fly screens to have the opportunity to vent the bedrooms at night and keep the mosquitoes outside. Amalia the Portuguese cleaning lady is such a nice person and did a great job - she came three times a week and the house and garden is well cleaned accordingly. The swimming pool is awesome and maintained on a weekly basis. We enjoyed it a lot.

Beautiful house and garden but cold in winter
We went to this house to relax and enjoy the Algarve. The house is old and it has beautiful exposed beams inside. The house was clean and the beds sleep well. The bathroom in basic but functional. Unfortunately, it is hard to keep the living room warm in late autumn/winter since it is double-height but the electric heaters in the kitchen and bedrooms are sufficient for those rooms. The kitchen has everything you need but kitchen tops are too low for someone who is 1.85 m. The garden and the views are beautiful. The house provides an oasis of rest. In the morning you wake up with the sound of birds in the grape vines which span over the entrance of the house. There are multiple restaurants on the road down to Monchique and there is a supermarket in Monchique itself. The people of the rental agency in Monchique are polite and helpful. All in all, we had a relaxing 5 days there and really enjoyed our stay.

Holiday was too short...
Sunny days at beautiful beaches, wonderful property nestled in the idyllic hillside, surrounded by all a diversity of birds flowers and trees with all the quality comforts of a holiday villa.

Beautiful, peaceful and authentic. Everything you need while staying uncluttered and simple.
A terrific place to wind down and enjoy rich gardens (well stocked with flowers and fruit trees), dramatic views all the way to the south coast, a peaceful rural setting, and easy access to a good selection of restaurants and other amenities. Quinta da Relva is carefully designed and equipped (no TV but who cares? ) with a nice pool, multiple sitting areas to take advantage of sun or shade, a practical and efficient kitchen, comfortable beds, and a fireplace in case of cool weather. The two bathrooms are modest and small respectively, but functional. It's a perfect retreat if you want to walk/hike - the Monchique area is unbeatable for this - or paint, or write a book, or just relax under the pergola and think important thoughts. Another option, one of our favourites, involves sitting on the rooftop terrace with a glass of wine, enjoying the view and the bird songs. Life can be a challenge! A big bonus comes in the form of caretaker Amalia, who arrives 3 times weekly to keep things in order. Low key, very sweet, and very helpful. Net net: Quinta da Relva is low on the glitz scale, but it's an absolute win if you want tranquility and a relaxed outdoorsy lifestyle along with comfortable facilities and readily accessible restaurants and other services. We'll certainly be back.

We live in Dorking in Surrey.
Our children have been coming here since they were born. Now 36 and 32 and still come with us twice a year bringing their friends with them . They love the sense of belonging here and have their own places to go and people to see.
We are all in the creative world and this place is our inspiration. In past years I have been arranging exchanges with young people between Monchique and Brighton as we are very aware of the difficulties unemployment brings to a rural community, so we have had quite a few living with us in Dorking and they have become friends.
I now have a small conpany in Portugal which works on European projects in arts and education

Why they chose this property

A Portuguese friend introduced us to Monchique . We saw this place and it was love at first sight even though it was getting dark and raining at the time. It has taken us years to rescue it. We have lost track of the people who have described it as 'absolute heaven' in our guestbook. We wanted the real Portugal and we wanted to be part of the town, to shop locally and use local trades people. We were helped to renovate this house by a local builder who used the traditional methods (and the traditional very slow speed). The materials are all sourced locally. We work on the garden whenever we are there. The terraces had been abandoned when we bought it from the farmer as there had been a drought, though we've done well to maintain them. We have kept a balance between a beautiful garden and and the wild mountain - always something to explore.

What makes this property unique

It is fairly unusual to be able to stay in a farmhouse rather than a 'villa'. According to our agents this is the most sought after house on the mountain . Some have stayed for as long as 5 months and some are just about to come for their 15th visit . This is a real much loved home and we are told it shows. Amalia our housekeeper has also looked after this house for 31 years and shows no sign of stopping. The house has 'most mod cons' and is very comfortable.

There are masses of books to read. No TV ( by design, but a DVD player & screen should it be desired) and good strong WiFi.
There is a big open fire and there will always be fresh flowers in every room.
Working with our local English speaking manager and our local activity company (with experienced, knowledgeable guides) enables us to organise bespoke holidays for your family or group of friends.

Our house sleeps 6 but we also accommodate guests in neighbouring houses. Take a look at www.quintadarelva.com or just give us a call and tell us what you are looking for. If you have a special event or celebration coming we are happy to help make it very memorable.
