About this property

Caballitos del Mar Villa Sur - Primary Forest Steps from the Beach and Ocean

Villa Sur is a stunning three bedroom, four bath villa that is 100’ (30m) from Dominical Beach. Surrounded by a large pool and lush gardens, with towering trees over 100’ tall, the villa is a haven for water enthusiasts, eco-tourists, and families that want a lovely beach house with all the amenities. With beds for up to nine, the Villa Sur can accommodate your family and friends, or three couples, or perhaps a reunion of school buddies. Each bedroom has air conditioning, but you’ll end up opening up the screened windows and going to sleep listening to the surf outside your villa. There are excellent views of the beach and ocean from nearly every room in the house
Two of the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms, and the third bedroom has its own bathroom steps away. A convenient sofa bed in the loft area is great for kids or teens. Of course, linens are provided for all beds, and towels are provided for both the bathrooms and beach and pool use.
The kitchen has all of the expected conveniences, with lovely granite countertops, the appliances you’d expect, and lots of cookware and dishware for fine dining. You can dine inside under the cathedral ceiling that soars 20’ overhead, but we end up dining outside by the terrace for almost every meal. Both tables seat six.
Villa Sur, and its companion properties, Villa Central and Villa Norte, are conveniently located about 5 minutes by car from Dominical. However, when the tide is between low and medium tide, you can walk to Dominical in about 20 minutes on the beach. That’s why we picked this property: you spend less time in the car, and more time in the pool, on the beach, or in the ocean. And you don’t need to have a four wheel drive vehicle to get to Villa Sur; any rental car will do. You have no steep hillside roads to contend with. When you want to dine out, there are great restaurants in Dominical, or 15 minutes south in Uvita, or 30 minutes south in Ojochal (our favorite!) The area is known for having a wide range of cuisines, from fresh seafood to vegetarian meals to Costa Rican specialties.
Excursions can be scheduled through our property manager, YouGetHere.com. Their concierge service will hook you up with river rafting trips, kayak trips through the mangroves, horseback rides to waterfalls,, trips to the Osa Peninsula, afternoons spent ziplining, or nature hikes for birdwatchers. Our villa is centrally located for ecotourism, about 45 minutes south of the famous Manuel Antonio National Park, and 60 minutes north of Sierpe, the gateway to Corcovado and the Osa Peninsula. Whitewater rafting is about 45 minutes away on Rio Savegre, depending on the recent rainfall, with its Class II and Class III rapids. We’ve run the Savegre about a dozen times and it never gets old.
Getting to Via Sur takes about 3 hours on paved roads from Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela (the “San Jose” airport), or 4.5 hours from the Liberia Airport. Renting a car is easy from a variety of familiar rental car agencies. You can also arrange a private shuttle from YouGetHere if you prefer.
To summarize:
● As close to the beach as you can be in Costa Rica.
● No four wheel drive required.
● Privacy and seclusion, yet in the middle of activities, dining, and ecotourism.
● On-site housekeeper and gardener/handyman.
● The option to rent two or three identical villas for large groups.
Villa Sur: The ideal place for your family vacation, surfing retreat, or couple’s getaway.

Great place for ladies' holiday
Villa 3 was a dream. Inside the house was lovely with everything you could want. Bedrooms were wonderful. A bit of traffic noise but was extremely unimportant as the place and location more than made up for it. We walked into town, which took about 15 minutes at low tide. We also had a place in the shade for our chairs right near the pool. Only suggestions might be beach chairs you can take to the beach and a boogie board to play with! Caretakers are right there and were very helpful; nice to know someone is so close. We had a great time. Thanks so much!

Dominical January 2024
The house is lovely, very clean, well kept and the kitchen is well equipped. The pool is fabulous and the pool iguanas and lizards were a constant source of entertainment during our 2 week stay. The beach is steps away and is gorgeous, as are the sunsets. We walked the beach every morning You can walk to the village of Dominical along the beach when the ride is not high but, even if the tide is in there are two short (50m and 100m) inland trails from the beach around the two impassible points. Dominical is a nice little surf town with restaurants and shops. Overall, this was a great house. That said, there are a few things we did not appreciate before we booked. First, the road noise. These three villas are the only ones on the beach which we really liked. However, they are situated below and parallel to the highway - which is only about 50 m away although there is a steep well treed embankment. The noise of trucks (and their air brakes) will disabuse you of any notion of remoteness. Second, this is a 3 bedroom house, NOT a four bedroom house. The fourth “bedroom” is a comprised solely of a sofa/trundle bed in the upstairs hallway between the two upstairs bedrooms. People walk in front of it when going to the third bedroom or from there to the third bathroom. It was hot and humid during our stay and only the three bedrooms had AC. The sofa bed has no access to AC nor anywhere to store clothes etc. Third, the beach has rip currents, although this seemed common to the area.

LOVE
We love this property! The home is nice, the AC units in the rooms definitely help because it gets so hot. The private beach is a dream. We love the close access and my kids loved seeing the iguanas hang around the pool all week. We love the location of this house as well because its a short drive to Dominical for food but it's also not far from Quepos which has another great option for food as well. We will definitely be back!

Very relaxing
I really enjoyed the Villa. It was very relaxing and the home provided all of the amenities one could ask for. The ocean is right there! Olny thing it would be nice to have a better trail, it was difficult for my elderly mother in law to get to the beach. Thank you for a great home

Perfect Costa Rica Getaway
Three friends and I celebrated our 50th birthdays and treated ourselves to this beautiful home with a pool right next to the beach. The property managers were excellent to work with and were prompt to reply. We had a chef come and provide two meals which was very special. We also had Laura from rockstar yoga Come and do a private yoga session with us on the beach. It was a dream! The home is really well equipped and the pool is amazing! We had such a good time and highly recommend this home for your next vacation

We fell in love with the Dominical area while visiting in 2004 while attending a Spanish language school in town. We found this rare parcel of ocean-front property and began the long process of building three lovely villas that are nestled into the shoreline jungle, while being as close to the beach as possible. We wanted a property where families could rent one, two, or three of the villas and no one would get short-changed. The two families that own the property both travel extensively, and have a good idea of what other travelers expect. No one wants to be "nickel and dimed" with extra charges and harsh penalties: they want to be treated fairly and get good value for their travel budget. That's our goal with Caballitos del Mar. Each villa has the same floor plan, but each also feels different due to the different views of the ocean and gardens. The ground floor is accessible, and has the advantage of a bedroom that opens right out onto the terrace and pool areas. A great room, with living room, dining area and kitchen, is the hub of the house, allowing a cool place to cook, use a computer, or dine. The upstairs features two bedrooms; one which is a "master" with ensuite bathroom, and one which has two beds and is frequently used by children. We chose YouGetHere to manage our property because they have the same high standards that we do, and they keep a close eye on the amenities and condition of the property so that no guests are disappointed. They can provide tour information, arrange for a private chef, or just answer questions about the area. They consistently get high marks in our reviews because they care about making everyone's vacation as good as it can be.

Why they chose this property

We love being close to the beach and close to town. Dominical is a quiet, sort of funky village that has lovely, locally-owned restaurants and shops, with a feeling of casualness and a love of nature. Surfing appears to be the draw for many, but it's really the closeness of the community to Costa Rica's biodiversity that permeates the place. All tourism is "ecotourism", and it's not a marketing ploy, it's the real deal. The shoreline is constantly changing with the tide and the season. One day it's smooth sand, and the next day it's full of smooth pebbles from the constant movement of the surf. With tides in the 3 meter range, the appearance of the beach changes from compact to vast over the course of six hours. The afternoon showers which occur for about half the year bring some exciting changes in the weather, but only for an hour or so at a time.

What makes this property unique

This is a unique oceanfront property that is as close to the water as possible. • The beach is less than a 100 feet stroll from the oceanfront garden. • A gorgeous private tiled pool is perfect for cool dips morning to night. • Beautiful landscaped tropical gardens with gorgeous tropical flowers. • The property is easy to access year 'round; 4x4 vehicles are not necessary. • There is an onsite staff providing housekeeping, security, and gardening. • Easy walk or drive to the supermarket, restaurants, stores and Dominical town. • Surf spots are as close as walking out to the beach, or wander up the beach to Dominical. • YouGetHere offers concierge services, which to name a few choices: On-site chef, massage, ecotourism tours, and whitewater rafting (among others.) • You will be personally met and escorted to the property, and given a tour of the villa, to ensure a fun and relaxing trip to Dominical and the Pacific Coast region!
