SCALA is a mountain village at the foot of the Lattari chain, overlooking the Valley of the Dragon and the Canneto Valley, 360 meters above sea level. It is the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast. Nice little town surrounded by chestnut trees and scattered groves of oak and holm, vis-à-vis from Ravello and right above Amalfi.
Scala looks like a happy set of beautiful hills and mountains, it features staircases that reach vast expanses of lemon groves and valleys that retain the charm of unspoiled nature, with rare botanical species, such as Woodwardia radicans in the natural reserve of VALLE DELLE FERRIERE.
Scala is the BEST starting point for hiking, pleasant walks lead to the other towns of the Coast: Ravello, Amalfi, Minori etc., and also to St. Catherine, Campoleone, Campidoglio, Minuta, and Pontone, the small villages that make up the municipality. While walking, guests can visit monuments, churches, towers, castles, and the traces of cultural stratification, such as portals, balconies, fountains, the system of canals to irrigate lemon groves, which are also the connective tissue of the territory, lived the plot of history and lead you to discover the depths of a territory and its people. There are several peaks: Mount Cervigliano (1203 m), Santa Maria dei Monti (1000), Mustaculo (800 meters), Round (1023 m) with chestnut and mixed woods. Suggestive 's "immersion" in the green spot of Punta d'AGLIO, where a reforestation of conifers invigorates the body and spirit. The sea in the distance exerts its influence in the north and huge rocky masses give the complete sense of the majesty of the Lattari chain. The visitors to this ancient and noble town, will see unusual landscapes. Scala is the birthplace of Frate Gerardo SASSO, the founder of the ORDER OF THE KNIGHTS OF MALTA. -The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (also known as Order of Malta or Knights of Malta) is a Roman Catholic order based in Rome, Italy. It takes its origins from the Knights Hospitaller, a group founded in Jerusalem about 1050 as an Amalfitan hospital to provide care for poor and sick pilgrims to the Holy Land.- Scala is the founding place of the Congregation of the MOST HOLY REDEEMER, which was soon to move beyond the borders of present day Italy. ALPHONSUS Maria dei Liguori, (writer, poet, musician, painter, bishop, doctor of the Church and patron of the moralists. His most famous song is a Christmas carol "You come down from the stars") was deeply moved by the plight of the poor living in the surrounding areas of Neaples and established his community with the aim of providing spiritual nourishment. Amongst his companions was Saint Gerard Majella: “… the most in need of spiritual help, as frequently they have no one to administer to them the Holy Sacrament or the Word of God; their plight is such that many, for lack of (apostolic) labourers, reach death's door without knowing anything at all of the necessary truths of the faith. This is because the number of priests…is few.” Redemptorists seek to put into action the command of Christ Jesus to “Love one another as I have loved you.”(John 15:12) According to their rule they are "to strive to imitate the virtues and examples of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer consecrating themselves especially to the preaching of the word of God to the poor". CHESTNUTS: The town is famous for its cultivation of chestnuts. Every year, mid October, for two consecutive weekends, a Sagra delle Castagne (a chestnut festival) is held in the main square. Scala is divided into six different hamlets with precise identities: Santa Caterina, Campoleone, Campidoglio, Scala, Minuta and Pontone. Attractions include: Santa Caterina: Porta Urbana, church of Santa Caterina, chapels of St. Paul and Santa Maria della Porta Campoleone: church of San Pietro, in Angevine-Gothic style. Campidoglio: church of San Giovanni Battista, with a Moresque bell tower. The Duomo of Scala, modified in Baroque times. It has maintained the medieval crypt, the Angevine sepulchre of Marinella Rufolo, and an episcopal mitre and a Crucifix from the 13th century. Also notable is the Bishops' Palace. Minuta: Romanesque church of Annunziata, with ancient frescos in the crypt. Pontone: church of San Giovanni Battista and the remains of the basilica of Sant'Eustachio. In Scala is an unknown world to discover and wonderful, ready to enchant you with the spectacle of a prodigious nature. The Natural Reserve Valle delle Ferriere, The valley is carved between high rock walls, partly covered by dense vegetation (mixed forest and chestnut) and in part by stretches of maquis and garrigue. At high altitudes circling hawks. The area is an example of exceptional beauty, a vital area, rich in colors, of light. Inside you can admire a rich vegetation, which in some areas reminiscent of the typical areas of tropical countries, draws in other environments of our more familiar Mediterranean. In the heart of the valley flows the river reeds which forms a very special and humid environment conducive to the development of many ferns including the rare Woodwardia radicans, a relic from the Tertiary.
