Waterfront Cottage, Surrounded by Splendor

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

A waterside cottage with two bedrooms, two canoes and an airy screen porch.

A lovely cottage on three acres of meadow and forest in the extraordinary Aspy Bay region of Cape Breton. The house offers serene, panoramic views of South Harbour, South Mountain and the ridge of mountains that extend to Cape North, the island's northernmost point. The cottage, with two comfortable bedrooms, an airy screened porch and a large common room filled with light and water views, is tucked among birch trees at the end of a point, surrounded on three sides by water. It comes equipped with two classic Old Town canoes, awaiting at shoreline.

The property is a few minutes drive from the Cabot Trail and a short hop from White Point, Dingwall and the incredible South Harbour Beach. From the cottage you can paddle across the harbor to the beach, or simply loll around fishing for stripped bass as the bald eagles fly overhead. By mid July the point is thick with blueberries.

From here you can easily reach all the wonders of outer Cape Breton, from whale watching at Bay St. Lawrence and Meat Cove to day tripping over to Cheticamp and the incredible salmon fishing in the Margaree River. Several of the towns nearby--Cape North, Neil's Harbour, Ingonish--have a variety of fun dining options. Nearby rivers offer topnotch fly fishing, cliff jumping and fresh-water swimming. There are trails that an entire summer couldn't get to the end of.

The house--available from mid May till the end of October--is perfect for one or two couples, a family of four, or for anyone seeking solitude and calm.

Springs come late to Cape Breton, but the summers stay long. So May can be chilly and the trees still largely leafless, while the summer can easily linger well into September. Similarly, the ocean waters are jarringly cold in early June but get far balmier by late July than the waters off Maine or even Cape Cod. Swimming is easy well past August.

The house has a fully stocked kitchen as well as a dining area and living room, though summers are spent mostly on the porch. The front bedroom has a queen bed and the back has three twins. There's a full bathroom, but for the adventurous, there is also an enclosed outdoor shower with a fine view of the harbour. The house is snug when it's chilly and is fully equipped with topnotch WiFi, as well as washer and dryer. But no, there is not a television, and you wouldn't want to look at one anyway.

About The Owner

We live in Washington DC, a mile from the Capitol and 20 hours drive from South Harbour. But we fell in love with Cape Breton, and this house, on our first visit. So the rest is history.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2015

Why The Owner chose Victoria, Subd. A

Friends invited us up in August of 2015 and this house was available for rent. It was also for sale. After four days we realized it had to be a part of every summer, and the entire family, so we took the leap. South Harbour and Aspy Bay are pretty far from the rest of the world, which is precisely what makes the setting so potent. All distance is paid back in equal wonder.

What makes this cottage unique

For unspoiled beauty and sheer diversity of activities, there are few spots on earth that can rival the outer end of Cape Breton and Aspy Bay in particular. We're located at the heart of all that.

Beautiful, Private, Peaceful and Very impressive

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here twice, loved it so much the first time we came back a second time. The cottage is very private and peaceful. It is just like coming home, very comfortable, clean and well maintained. Great view of the water and the water is beautiful and you will enjoy lots of birds. Two bald eagles perched atop the trees across the lake each and every morning around 7 am it was perfect for a photography buff such as I. The cottage is it at the northern end of the island so it is a bit of a drive from the causeway, but it is well worth the drive. Neil's Harbour is 20 minutes down the road, it is lovely there, somewhat like stepping back in time. It is also a great place to go Sea Glassing. Dingwall is about 10 minutes down the road and has an interesting museum all about the first lighthouse in Canada and St. Paul's Island. Grace the tour guide is very knowledgeable. Ingonish Beach is about 60 minutes down the road and is a great beach for swimming. Baddeck is about 90 minutes down the road and is a cute little village with a beautiful yacht club and has plenty of restaurants and cute little shops to venture through. As you can see......everything is just down the road. lol Good times, good times, good it here. Hoping to come back again next year, and we will definitely stay at Neil's Cottage.

Awesome Views

  • 5 of 5

The cottage on Crooked Pine Point exceeded our expectations. It was attractive, comfortable, clean and well stocked. The views and sunsets were outstanding and the canoes were an enjoyable bonus. It is a wonderful base for exploring the beauty of northern Cape Breton. Loved it there!!

The owner was most helpful too.

A charming cottage in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at your cottage. It was very comfortable and clean and well-equipped. The setting is gorgeous and the location was excellent for exploring the north Cape. The sunrises are not to be missed! We particularly enjoyed visiting Neil's Harbour and Meat Cove and had wonderful meals at the Chowder Houses in both locations. We hope to return soon.

Truly Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from eight days at the cottage. While the weather could have been more cooperative, the cottage was great. Even on rainy days we could sit on the screen porch and enjoy the view. Many eagle (counted six individuals) as well as other bird and wildlife sightings.

Awesome Place in the best part of Cape Breton

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 wonderful days here on vacation with the family while exploring the natural beauty of the Cape Breton area. The Cottage is absolutely great and Neil provided a great guide and information that helped to make the trip even more enjoyable with tips and suggestions that you would never find in a typical tourist brochure. The location is fantastic with an amazing view. All in all was an a fantastic stay and hope to be back again soon.

Peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed this very peaceful cottage with awesome views of the sound w/ eagles soaring. Perfect location for many hikes: Coastal trail, Jack Pine, Lighthouse Trail at Meat Cove, White Point, Warren Lake, Black Brook and Neils Harbor, Ingonish Beach (jump in!) and more distant the Skyline Trail. Coastal Inn and Pub greeted us warmly and even served us after hours on our first night late arrival; Chowder House has really good lobster sandwiches and other great choices. Bean has the best muffins and coffee. Cottage is comfortable, screened in porch inviting, kitchen with all the right stuff for good meals. We recommend this cottage for anyone wishing to visit the best of Cape Breton Island.
