About this property

The Old Stables, Alltshellach Cottages, 4 Star Self Catering near Glencoe

Situated in a peaceful hamlet close to the banks of Loch Leven at the heart of the Scottish Highlands our two self-catering holiday cottages are surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland. They are close to the stunning Glencoe valley (5 miles), Fort William and Ben Nevis (13 miles) and not far from Oban and the Isle of Mull (30 miles).

Both cottages benefit from high speed BT Superfast Fibre Plus Wifi, Smart TVs with Netflix subscription and Amazon Echo Plus bluetooth speakers with Amazon Unlimited music subscription (50 million songs).

Our two stone cottages also benefit from being within walking distance to the village pub, The Old Ferry Bar and restaurant at the nearby Loch Leven Hotel. A short walk takes you down through the grounds of Alltshellach Country House opposite to picturesque Bishop's Bay on the banks of Loch Leven, and then along the forested loch side path to the Loch Leven Hotel. The Old Ferry Bar serves River Leven ales and has a comprehensive single malt and gin collection. Alternatively an even shorter route to the pub can be found along the gravel lane opposite the cottages (take a torch for the walk back!).

Alltshellach Cottages form part of a trio of courtyard cottages and date from the 19th century. Built from Kentallen granite under a Ballachulish slate roof, they were originally built to house servants working at Alltshellach Country House (former residence of the Bishop of Argyll, hence Bishop’s Bay), which stands opposite. The cottages have been refurbished to provide very high standard self-catering accommodation, and each has been awarded a 4 star grading by Visit Scotland.

Each of the two cottages provides self-catering holiday accommodation for up to 6 people. The Old Stables (shown here) is sister property to The Old Coach House (Owners Direct Reference 8112982).

The Glencoe, Glen Nevis and Mamore mountain ranges are all very close by, with ample opportunities for hill walking, mountain biking, horse riding, sailing, fishing and golf. Sports climbers will definitely want to visit the Ice Factor indoor climbing centre with ice climbing wall in Kinlochleven (8miles). Fishing is possible in Loch Leven from Bishop's Bay, located a five minute walk away. Golfers can enjoy a round at the Dragon's Tooth Golf Course, located a 5 minute drive away.

The attractions of Glencoe and Loch Leven, apart from the impressive Highland landscape, include the renowned Loch Leven Seafood Cafe, which is only a 5-minute drive (or very pleasant 15 minute cycle) from the holiday cottages along the shores of Loch Leven. The Seafood Cafe serves a delicious range of locally sourced shellfish and seafood dishes, including langoustines, lobster, crab and clams. Many other good options for dining exist close by.

Please note that for families with small children we supply a Baby Bjorn high chair, a Mothercare travel cot and stair gates (kept in the utility room).

The Old Stables is all on one level and therefore good for the elderly, and it's location back from the road behind The Old Coach House make it suitable for families with small children. However, we recommend small children are supervised at all times in the living area if the large wood burning stove is on, and when playing in the cobbled courtyard (the cobbles are the original cobbles from the 19th century and look lovely but can be difficult for two year olds to navigate!).

Perfect accommodation in stunning scenery
The property was perfectly equipped for a family holiday, spacious and practical it allowed being together and retreating to one's cosy bedroom. The kitchen equipment was above the usual standard, we were able to cook lovely meals for all. On a rainy day the room with the washing machine and dryer could be used to dry clothes and shoes. The location allows nice walks from the house and entry points for fantastic walks, for example the West Highland Way or in the area of Kinloch Leven, are not far away. We could have stayed another two weeks!

Perfect location in Glencoe Area
This was a beautiful property perfectly situated at Loch Leven and convenient for day trips to Oban, Ft William, Fort Agustus and the surrounding areas. We stayed busy exploring and hiking the area. There were a few restaurants and a nice grocery store close to the property, which has been beautifully restored and well taken care of. The kitchen was nicely equipped and the washer/dryer came in handy. The property manager was very responsive to our 1 request and provided thorough arrival and property information prior to our arrival. There was only me and my husband, and our adult granddaughter came the 2nd week - the property os large and allows for plenty of privacy - which helped as 1 was working remotely - the HS internet was never an issue. This was the perfect place for two weeks, during our month in Scotland.

Lovely Property
This was a great property in a location that really suited our needs. The house was larger than we expected and was warm and comfortable with all the equipment and cooking facilities necessary. The location was great. The Loch Leven hotel was good for food and a drink and my electric car was able to be charged at the Ballachuilish Hotel CPS charger only 15 mins walk away. We both enjoy runningand walk

What makes this property unique

Bishop's Bay is a hidden gem and we recommend the walk from Alltshellach Cottages down to Bishop's Bay and along the banks of Loch Leven to The Old Ferry Bar at the Loch Leven Hotel for a pint of River Leven Ale as a great way to start the holiday!
