About this property

Beautiful, spacious air-conditioned apartment close to south coast beaches

Welcome to Somnia, a holiday haven in the heart of the Garrison World Heritage Centre, and only minutes away from the wonderful beaches, bars and restaurants of Christchurch, Barbados. The apartment is on the first floor of a detached house in a residential cul-de-sac.

Somnia is ideal for visitors who want easy access to the best beaches on the south coast, such as the famous Accra Beach (Rockley) and Hastings Boardwalk, as well as a fantastic range of bars, fast food outlets and fine dining restaurants to please all palates. Local amenities such as supermarkets, ATMs, pharmacies, and public transport - are within minutes' walk. Many popular visitor attractions are close by, such as the George Washington House and the Barbados Museum, and the Garrison Savannah, where visitors can mingle with locals and enjoy free horse racing during the season. The capital city, Bridgetown, offers fabulous duty-free shopping, including the famous Cave Shepherd department store.

Somnia offers guests a comfortably furnished home-from-home. The spacious air-conditioned master bedroom has a double bed and offers views over the Caribbean sea. It has built-in wardrobes and masses of storage space. It opens onto a large, modern, tiled en-suite wet-room with a hot and cold shower and double vanity units. The second bedroom is also air-conditioned and offers a double bed, ample storage space and its own adjoining bathroom.

After a day out at the beach or exploring Barbados’s many attractions, you can relax in the spacious open-plan lounge; watch cable television, play board or card games, have a few rounds of dominoes, read a book from our small library or enjoy an eclectic selection of music. High-speed internet is available throughout the property.

Somnia is ideal for guests who prefer self-catering options. We offer a fully equipped kitchen with a good-sized fridge-freezer, microwave, six burner hob and oven with a grill, juicer, rice cooker, food processor, coffee grinder, coffee machine and just about every piece of kitchen equipment you will need. Perfect for guests wanting to try their hand at some Bajan dishes such as macaroni pie and flying fish.

For those who prefer not to use their precious holiday time in the kitchen, there is a range of nearby restaurants and bars offering breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks, as well as a number of fast-food outlets offering free home delivery.

A special feature of Somnia is its large open veranda, furnished with easy lounging chairs and a dining table shaded from the sun. Take time to relax in an Adirondack lounger as you enjoy a lazy breakfast while planning the day's activities. In the afternoon, enjoy a chilled beer or wine, rum punch or whatever cocktail takes your fancy, (help yourselves to fresh coconuts and limes from the trees in the garden), while watching the antics of our resident family of green monkeys, or marvelling at the iridescent hummingbirds as they hover over the flowering plants. In the evenings, relax out here and enjoy spectacular sunsets over the Caribbean. Whatever time of day, the veranda is the perfect place to relax.

Somnia is situated on a hill overlooking the Caribbean and is often blessed with a fresh breeze. But if you feel the heat you will enjoy the solar-powered air conditioning in the bedrooms, and all rooms have ceiling fans, as well as an array of floor and table fans for your comfort.

A high chair and travel cot are provided for infants.

Somnia accommodates four to five guests, so it is the perfect choice for a family, a couple or a group of friends.

NEW FOR THE 2023 SEASON

NOTE that on the lower floor of Somnia, we also have a 2 bedroom one bathroom apartment which can accommodate up to four people, and is also available for rental.

As this is a ground-floor apartment, it is ideal for guests with mobility problems, who cannot climb stairs.

For larger groups/families, the lower apartment can also be rented along with the upper apartment as a single house.

We will shortly be listing that apartment separately but in the meantime please do contact us if you are interested in this option.

There is free parking for up to three cars in the driveway, and guests are welcome to make use of the garden and the ground-floor patio area.

A housekeeper is available who will clean the apartment and change towels and bedding on a weekly basis. She will also give you a hand with your laundry if requested, though this is at the guests' own expense. The washing machine and dryer are in a separate utility room behind the house.

Outstanding in every way!
We stayed here in upper level for 10 days of our vacation and had friends join us. Above and beyond, pictures do not do it Justice for space, cleanliness and comfort. Has beach modern decor, air works great in bedrooms. Only improvement could be adding air to living room, but was not a big deal or concern. Had an outside issue which was not our hosts fault but they were on it to ensure it was quickly resolve and treated us to a wonderful Bajan lunch. They are very attentive!! Location is perfect, 10 min quick to main road and Blakey’s restaurant on the Boardwalk. 10 min by car to Pebbles Beach. Sue’s Market is a quick 5 min walk and she has everything you can think of!! Wonderful lady!! Jump on ZR for 3.50 BBD to the Gap. Will not hesitate to come back!

Superb apartment 10 minutes to beach
We loved our stay in Ian and Cecily‘s apartment! The apartment itself is very comfortable and suitable for a couple and friends. It is well appointed and has everything you need for self catering. We particularly loved their second-story terrace, which is huge and surrounded by plants and trees. Ian was extremely flexible and communicative during our process. Trudi, the property manager, and Annette, the cleaner, and Richard, the groundskeeper, were all fabulous. It’s located in a very quiet and safe neighborhood, and we will be sure to come back.

Felt like home!
My family and I spent a lovely 10 days at Somnia. Very relaxing, perfectly located, and with all the amenities of home. The only suggestion I have is to put a non-slip shower mat in the master bathroom. It was otherwise perfect! I would definitely book again. Communication with Trudi was also amazing.

Beautiful house but the Neigbouring dogs are loud
My husband and I spent 4 weeks in Somnia looking for a relaxing stay. This was not our first trip to Barbados. We plan on purchasing a property this year in Barbados. Our previous stay on the island was great. Somnia is a clean, comfortable home away with a lovely veranda. The kitchen appliances aside from the fridge and stove are tired though. The first week the handle to the toaster fell off. It was brought to the attention of the Property Manager, Trudi and we said we'd make due with using a knife to push down the handle. Our coffee maker never worked properly taking over an hour to brew. Before the second week is stopped working all together. Trudi was contacted that day and she quickly responded stating she'd have it replaced. By the 3rd week we still had not seen a replacement coffee maker so we purchased our own. Trudi then offered to pay for it but since we plan having our own place we decided to keep it and store it for our next trip to Barbados. The neighbouring houses are close and as such sound travels. We understand you cannot choose your neighbours but it should be understood if you're looking to rent this property that there are several noisy dogs. We are dog breeders ourselves and understand dogs bark. Most of the time it's because the owner's don't pay attention or correct them. In this case the neighboring dogs were quite disturbing. They would bark for 10 min at a time, 1/2 hour or 3 hours straight. The one night they barked from 9:30 pm - 11:30 pm non-stop. We only heard 1 owner correct their dog on 1 occasion, only for it to continue and the owner ignore it. Since the house in question is VERY close it be heard in the bedroom very easily with the windows closed and the AC on. We complained the first week to the the Property Manager, Trudi but she didn't seem to acknowledge our concern at that point. We didn't want to be "Karen's" so we didn't complain again until it got too much to ignore. By the end of the 2nd week we couldn't enjoy our stay with the windows open close the patio doors and windows at times just to watch tv. At this point we brought it to the attention of both the Property Manager and the Owner. If it hadn't been for the fact that we had paid good money to stay we would have packed up and found other accommodations. Will we return to Barbados? ABSOLUTELY. Would we ever stay at Somnia? Never again. The house is lovely but not the dogs. Not sure how Ian can resolve this issue.

About the host

Hosted by Cecily and Ian Jones

Host profile image
We are Cecily and Ian, a British/Baijan couple currently living between south-east London and Barbados.
We believe that our guests should enjoy their stay with us without interference, but when we are around we are happy to answer any questions, recommend places to visit, pick up groceries and deal with any problems. When we are not around we have an agent who can meet and greet and deal with any issues.

Why they chose this property

What makes Somnia different from other properties is its homely but comfortable feel and its quiet, secluded location. It definitely does not have the soulless hotel feel of many apartments we have stayed at. This means that you can enjoy the peace and serenity of what feels like a rustic setting, yet the bars, beaches and nightlife are close by when you want them.

Barbados holds special significance for us because Cecily was born here - in the "Scotland district", so-called because it is the hilly part of the island. We have have visited many times and spend as much time on the island as we can. Although Barbados is small, there are still many places that we have not yet visited and other places that have changed over the years and are worth a second, third or fourth visit. Some attractions that we believe you will never tire of are the Atlantis submarine trip, St Nicholas Abbey, Harrison's Caves, Hunte's Garden and any boat trip involving rum punch, excellent food and swimming with the turtles. We believe that you too will want to come back, once you have experienced the island.

What makes this property unique

What makes Barbados different from many other Caribbean islands is that it is comparatively well-developed and can feel "urban" and "western" but it is still Caribbean in the most important ways: the climate, the sunsets, the beaches, the rum punch, the food and the welcoming spirit of the people.

Barbados is also very accessible with frequent direct flights from several North American and UK cities. For example, Virgin and British Airways do daily flights from London Gatwick and also flights from Manchester and Glasgow. Because of the competition between them, special deals are often available.

Somnia's location is a perfect compromise between the bustle and noise of a beach front property and something more secluded and tranquil. From here you can conveniently enjoy all the amenities and activities that the island has to offer.
