About the property

(Please read Note at the end of this description.)

Located 75 min. north of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise, but for the sounds of birds and wind.

Our casita (small house) is set on 13.5 acres on top of one of the highest mesas overlooking Abiquiu Lake, with unlimited 360 degree views north toward the lake and Ghost Ranch and south towards the Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000 foot flat-topped mountain that Georgia O'Keeffe loved to paint, making the mountain into an icon of northern New Mexico. Historically, Pedernal is a sacred site for Native Americans and local inhabitants.

You can soak your body in a luxurious HOT TUB after a day of hiking, reading, painting, or writing. Our casita was designed in the traditional adobe style, including a Kiva wood- burning fireplace (wood provided), pine hand-hewn vigas that help support the ceiling; tile floors with radiant heating; and thick walls to hold the warmth in winter and keep you cool in summer, walls hand-plastered in the adobe style; and Mexican antique furniture.

We added modern comfort throughout, including a modern and well-stocked kitchen, local art and track lighting on dimmers, and a spacious great room with a Mexican dining table that can be expanded with 3 leaves for art or writing projects.

To take advantage of the long and wide views across the valleys, we built two 'portales' (covered porches). You can dine on the north side while gazing down the valley and across the lake towards the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun--even in winter--on the southern portale, as you look towards the Jemez Mountains and Pedernal. Both portales are furnished with a comfortable outdoor dining set. There's also a recliner and a propane BBQ.

Since there are no city lights to compete, billions of stars fill the night sky, part of the magic of New Mexico. Our favorite time for the hot tub is at night, gazing at the Milky Way and galaxies, frequently punctuated by numerous shooting stars; when it's not dark, moonlight bathes the rolling hills and desert floor.

A Gentle warning: The views, the far off patterns of changing weather, and the warm coziness of the casita may make it difficult to leave the casita at all.

Abiquiu Lake Casita was featured in New Mexico Magazine, November, 2011.

About Glynn

We are former college English teachers who love the southwest. We live in Tesuque, just north of Santa Fe.

Glynn purchased this house in 2000

Why Glynn chose Youngsville

Having been in love with the southwest for a long time, we found this site in 2000 and it was more beautiful than any of the places we had seen--or have seen since-- during our travels throughout this extraordinary part of the country.

What makes this house unique

Peace, quiet, relaxation, endless views and walks, time to read and be creative. After that, explore the villages, cultures and wilderness in and beyond Abiquiu.

The beauty of it all....

  • 5 of 5

My wife have been coming here every year for the past 6 years. The quiet peacefulness is contagious. The casita sits on a small mesa, overlooking Pedernal, Lake Abiquiu and the cliffs beyond. Your voice, wind and the birds are pretty much all you will hear. If you have recently seen the movie Hostiles, these are the same gorgeous views as in the movie, when they are traveling through New Mexico. No coincidence as this is as pretty as New Mexico gets. Nothing better than to get in the hot tub with a glass of wine and soak it all in. Beautifully furnished too with a nice king sized bed to lay in and gaze at the brightest star you will ever see, being that you are so far from any population.

Owner's Response: After 10 years, I never tire of reading these reviews. This IS a magical place. When Scott and I first saw it in 2006, I cried because I was so overwhelmed by the beauty, by the vistas in every direction, by the palpable sense of time in the very layers of colored strata in the cliffs, in the human history inscribed in the land. High Desert Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house sits under the spell of the Pedernal Mountain, a spiritual mountain in the area. My family loved the wildlife we witnessed including prairie dogs , jack rabbits, and coyotes. One sunrise there was the sound of an Indian flute and chants drifting up from the lake area. The house is very comfortable and sunrise and sunset simply breathtaking every single day. As a student at the Ghost Ranch it was a wonderful retreat from the sparse ranch accommodations, but it is a 30 minute trip back and forth. The kitchen really is well stocked in cooking supplies for a rental house. For a rural setting the internet and television connections excellent. Loved the daily visit from the neighbor's poodles.

Easy to visit Taos and Santa Fe for day trips.

What a great place!

  • 5 of 5

Very remote, but you are rewarded with a great view and relaxing place to stay. We used the Casita as a home base to explore Ghost Ranch, Ojo Calientie, Taos, Santa Fe, Bandelier, and on and on. The hot tub is a wonderful place to watch the stars. The bed is fantastically comfortable, and the view can't be beat. Kitchen is well-appointed, good video selection, and a ton of local information to help you decide what to see and do. Highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Yes, the casita is remote from towns but that's why we have 360 degree views of spectacular landscape for less than a million dollars, clean clear air, and only the sound of birds. And we're not so remote that you're all alone; we have really lovely neighbors a few hundred meters away, including our caretaker who takes excellent care of our casita and is available if needed for anything. We love receiving these reviews and knowing how much people love their stay with us.

My new favorite place!

  • 5 of 5

The Abiquiu Lake Casita was the perfect getaway spot. Gorgeous views in every direction, very comfortable and tasteful furnishings, beautiful Southwestern art, all put together in a home that welcomes, in an area that humbles. The house was incredibly well stocked when I visited and a fresh load of firewood just delivered. I worried a little about being there in early Dec. (snow?) but was lucky with the weather and it was upper 50s-60s days and 30s at night. There is a lot to see and do in the area. I went riding at nearby Ghost Ranch but I saved most of the exploring for the next time. I was more than content to hang out in this lovely home and walk the surrounding mesas. I look forward to future visits.

Superior property, you can not do any better!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was the most relaxing portion of our trip, I wish we had booked for a longer stay. The location is jaw dropping, with Georgia O’Keefe views from every window. Perfectly furnished casita with very well-equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, thoughtful touches throughout the home. I highly recommend this property, you will not be disappointed.

Owner's Response: We love hearing from our guests that their stays were as perfect as we would expect them to be for us. And by the way, we depend on our guests letting us know if anything at all does go wrong, so that we can see to it immediately; we have a wonderful retired RR engineer who lives very close by who can take care of (nearly) anything! Love that all of you keep in touch with us with these wonderful reviews and messages.
