About the property

Burton Hall Self Catering

Burton Hall is a large attractive wooden house transported from Norway in the 1870’s by a local Wool Mill owner. It is set in 1.4 acres of garden with lovely views over the town and to Dartmoor. Having started life as a family home, Burton Hall went on to be a successful hotel, then a country club and now back to being a family home.

We have 2 properties available for short breaks, weekend and longer stays - a one bedroom wooden Cabin and a two bedroom self contained Apartment situated in the East Wing of Burton Hall. Both have garden areas and are well equipped to ensure you have a comfortable stay. Views from the Cabin and the East Wing are stunning across the old town to Dartmoor.

Surrounded by fields with far reaching views to Dartmoor, the Cabin and Apartment offer peaceful ‘away from it all’ experience attracting a wide variety of birds, bees and butterflies. This location is perfect for cycling and walking, with several walks on the doorstep, including the Tarka trail.

A short walk down the hill brings you into the old town of North Tawton where you will find everyday amenities including a Spar, post office, chemist, deli/tea room, gift shop, three pubs with food menus and an award winning fish and chip shop. The market towns of Okehampton, Crediton and Hatherleigh are within easy reach where there are supermarkets, independent shops, open air markets and leisure centres. The lovely cathedral city of Exeter is 20 miles away.

Burton Hall is ideally situated between the craggy tors of Dartmoor and the beautiful sandy beaches and surf of the North Devon & Cornwall coast with many delightful little villages dotted throughout the area. There are several excellent coarse fishing lakes and rivers, golf courses, and a number of National Trust properties and gardens, including RHS Rosemoor, within easy reach. There are few better spots from which to experience the joys of beautiful Devon.

About Jean Trewhitt

Martin and I moved to Burton Hall in 2013 after living in Bristol for over 30 years. When we retired we wanted to move to a rural area and have a project - we have done both of those things at Burton Hall!

We both like walking and have discovered lots of local walks. We enjoy feeding and watching the birds in our garden, and relish the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Jean Trewhitt purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Jean Trewhitt chose North Tawton

We were looking for a suitable property in Devon which would provide accommodation for ourselves and potential for developing holiday lets. Burton Hall offered us a unique project and scope to have 2 self catering units - the Cabin and the ground floor Apartment

Burton Hall and The Cabin are in a lovely setting with stunning views across the old town to Dartmoor. Whilst enjoying a peaceful rural setting it is only 5 minutes walk down the hill to shops and local amenities in the small town of North Tawton.

We enjoy the peace and quiet of the location and ease of access to local walks on our doorstep. Dartmoor and Fingle woods are only a short drive away. We enjoy visiting the market towns of Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Crediton and Tavistock.

What makes this apartment unique

Whilst enjoying stunning views across to Dartmoor in a peaceful setting, Burton Hall is only a 5 minute walk from the small town.

Cabin & Ground Floor Apartment offers scope for families or friends to rent together

There are several local walks and cycle routes on our doorstep.

The Tors of Dartmoor are easily accessed via Okehampton, Belstone, Chagford and Sticklepath, a short drive away.

Being based in Mid Devon enables you to reach the North Devon and Cornwall coast, South Devon and the city of Exeter.

Great break

  • 4 of 5

We were not disappointed with our stay at Barton Hall. We were warmly welcomed by Jean & her husband & the cream tea was the icing on the cake! The annex had gr8 views, gr8 shower, crisp white bedding & fluffy soft towels- all the things that tick my boxes. If we could want for anything more it would have been a king size bed to accommodate my hubbys 6ft stature however this isn't a criticism as we knew the bed was a standard double. The complimentary logs really made you feel welcome when using the log burner which wasn't needed to keep you warm as the central heating did its job well. Wld def stay again & recommend to others.

Beautiful views and welcoming owners

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the East wing of Burton Hall. We arrived to a lovely cream tea set up for us. The accommodation is perfect; clean, comfortable and equipped with all necessary items. Excellent WiFi connection and fantastic local fish and chip shop. Wonderful views over Dartmoor and friendly owners happy to show us around the rest of Burton Hall which was very interesting.

Truly unique building. Lovely hosts.Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

The property and location are stunning. The history of the building was fascinating. Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. The apartment was well laid out and fitted with modern bathroom and kitchen. It was really comfortable and warm and the log fire just added to the ambience. Fantastic high walls and big windows so lots of light and sun!

Our hosts were really lovely. Very warm and welcoming and were happy to share with us the history of the building. Had great views and such a quiet and peaceful location. We intend to return as soon as we can!

Charming house with great views, very friendly and understandable hosts

  • 5 of 5

Before our stay we had a friendly email exchange with the owner. She was very understandable and held the reservation despite the belated payment.

When we arrived, we were fascinated by the unique look of the house - old Norwegian architecture and carvings. We found the East Wing Apartment carefully renovated, maintaining the original charm of the rooms. You may have the chance to get invited and view some of the other rooms with wonderful ceilings and doors. The kitchen was well equipped, all appliances incl. WiFi,TV, DVD were working flawlessly, temperature and flow of the shower could be well controlled. We enjoyed great views over the village to the Dartmoor mountains either from the garden or the bedroom window, the changing light made for variety. This is an absolutely calm place with no sounds of traffic, perfect for relaxing or as starting point for hiking. Detailed OS maps covering the Dartmoor area and mid-Devon are provided. Within walking distance there is a surprisingly well sorted supermarket, a butcher and several pubs. We would again like to emphasise the friendliness of our hosts, which we tested with an early morning fire alarm and subsequent power shut down of the property. Definitely our recommendation to stay with a five star+ rating.

Lovely location.

  • 5 of 5

The owner emailed me before our stay to ask if we needed anything. She met us on arrival, was very friendly and told about the history of her unique home. the apartment was freshly renovated to a high standard, but still in keeping with the building. It was well equipped, clean and had everything needed for a pleasant stay, even a cream tea The en-suite was very modern and spacious. There was an amazing view from the bedroom across the lovely garden.
