About this property

Idyllic Thatched Cottage With Garden Overlooking The Sea, North Of Copenhagen

The cottage is a characterful old fisherman's cottage close to the beach, in the lovely old fishing village of Sletten. It has good outside space, with lawn and terraces. It is located about 30km north of Copenhagen, along the old coast road towards Elsinore, and is about 45 mins' drive from Copenhagen airport. The cottage comfortably sleeps 5 but can easily accommodate 6, has 3 bedrooms (with a 4th bunk room in the outhouses, useable during the summer). It has a good cottage kitchen, and a lovely sitting room, with a conservatory for sitting in during the summer months overlooking the sea towards Sweden.

Not for Tall arachnophobes
I don't like to be a harsh critic, but I want to be honest in how I describe a property. So here it goes. Pros: 1. Location is great. Close to the water, harbor, small town, quiet neighborhood. Very Peaceful. 2. Old home charm, was relatively clean and beds were reasonably updated. Loved the straw roof, stained glass. 3. Neighbors were very nice. Older Gentleman Steen was very kind. Cons- 1. Overgrown vegetation. We didn't feel like we could hang out outside because of the overgrown plants and cobwebs everywhere. To their credit- it would be a lot of work, but did not look like pics online. 2. Spiders- There weren't dangerous spiders, but if you have any arachnophobia this is not the house for you. I killed probably 30 spiders crawling on walls during our stay. Most European House spiders. (Barn spiders in the US). Again, they're not dangerous or very poisonous, but they wigged my kids out pretty bad. 3. Electricity- I had to replace a 16amp fuse 3 times during our stay for the oven/stove. Couldn't use Stove & oven simultaneously w/o blowing them. 4. Ceiling beams and door height. I'm 6'6" (about 2 Meters) tall. The beams and doorways everywhere were about 5'10". Even ducking, I hit my head on them probably 20 times over 9 days. May have gotten a concussion on one of them. If you're taller than 5'8", don't rent this place. It was really obnoxious. If you're short and are fine with spiders, go for it, I'd recommend you keep looking.

Great Denmark Getaway
My wife and I visited in the summer of 2023 with our 17 yr old son and our 21 yr old daughter who visited for 2 nights as she was studying in Copenhagen. The cottage is beautiful in a greasy location near the water. It was perfect for us, but be sure the bedroom layout fits your needs. The location is amazing with several outdoor “rooms” along with a nice glass porch. There is a butcher, cheese monger, bakery (try the cardamom buns), fish shop and vegetable store within walking distance. All are outstanding. There are also several grocery stores nearby. There are numerous dining options in the area and in Rungsted havn a few miles away. Be sure to try Restaurant Sletten down the street; a must visit. We made a number of day trips to Copenhagen, Mons Klint, Hellsingor and beyond. All sites were easily accessible from the cottage. We would definitely return.

very nice stay near Copenhagen
We were glad to have found such a very nice house in the north of Copenhagen. Set a lot of very beautiful sightseeing opportunities like Copenhagen, like the Louisiana Museum and not very far the Hamlet Slot.

My brothers and I have owned the property for 6 years and inherited it from my mother, who owned it since 1995, when she inherited it from her parents with whom she jointly bought it in 1972. We have spent many happy times there both in summer and winter (both with snow and without!) The house is extremely peaceful and idyllically situated. A day spent lazing at the house or in the garden, or swimming at the local beach 100m away is low key and relaxed, or you can take a trip into Copenhagen or Elsinore for sightseeing or shopping. When you come, please don't forget to sign the guest book too!

Why they chose this property

We inherited the cottage, so have had many happy years of experience of the area. It is less than an hour's drive from Copenhagen airport, and 2 hours from Roedby, with the car ferry to Puttgarden in Germany.
Sletten is an old fishing village with a sailing harbour (and a good fishmonger, supplied partly by local fishermen), full of thatched cottages. There is a local sandy beach perfect for families, with a bathing bridge in the summer and shallow, calm water stretching out at least 100m into the sea.
Within 20 mins' drive or train ride are Elsinore (Kronborg, good shopping and restaurants), Fredensborg and Rungsted / Horsholm, with good local museums including Karen Blixen's house. The internationally renowned Louisiana gallery is a 20 min walk, and Copenhagen is 1/2 hour's drive.

What makes this property unique

The cottage is warm and cosy in the winter, and opens up in the summer. It is 5 mins' drive to local shops including 3 supermarkets, and excellent local bakers, butcher and greengrocer.
It is easy driving distance or train into Copenhagen or Elsinore.
The cottage has 3 bedrooms, a sitting / dining room and a kitchen, with a conservatory for use in the summer. There is a lovely wood burning stove in the middle of the house which is perfect for cooler weather.
Surrounding the house are gardens and terraces for meals and playing outside.
