About this property

Our elegant self-contained Edwardian wing is particularly suitable for families

The Wing was originally created in 1911 as a Drawing Room and Library for the main house, but has been a self-contained ground floor apartment for many years. It is a series of large interconnecting rooms and spaces, with yellow walls, parquet floors, domed ceilings and diamond paned windows, and because of this configuration is especially suitable for families, particularly parents with children. The accommodation includes:
A large double bedroom furnished with a 5’ (1.5 m) king-size double bed and duvet.
A large comfortable TV and sitting area with sofas and armchairs around a fireplace with a wood-burning stove.
The Wing also has a 4’ (1.2 m) wall mounted fold down double bed, and two single beds.
An alcove dining area with a table that will accommodate 6 people. If you are renting another Pekes house, we can provide a second matching table and chairs, allowing a dining facility for up to 12 people.
A small fully equipped kitchen, with electric cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, washing machine, and tumble dryer.
There is also a bathroom with bath, electric shower and basin, and a separate WC.
The Wing is approached through its own colonnade garden with outside sitting areas. Guests can also use the heated indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and tennis court and wander round the extensive gardens and park.

Beautiful quirky property
Bit musty when we arrived but still a beautiful, quirky property (little rough around the edges but so are we) and lovely well maintained grounds. Super comfy bed. Our visit was originally to celebrate my partner's 50th birthday but I ended up proposing so we would definitely consider Pekes as a wedding destination

Charming, somewhat misleading
Charming property, great views, lots of character. Not exactly as advertised: there is 1, not 2 bedrooms, and the beds are small and certainly no "superking". Overall the property could do with a bit of a refresh.

A hidden gem
We had a lovely relaxing time staying here, the gardens are beautifully kept. The kids had so much fun in the pool, there was plenty to do and such a peaceful setting. We’ll definitely be coming back.

About the host

Hosted by Kildare Borrowes

Host profile image
I am Kildare Borrowes, cousin of the owner Eva Morris, and I look after all Pekes bookings for her.
I am a writer and gardener, and particularly interested in the history of Sussex and its landscapes, its painters and its gardens. Like for most people I find there are few greater pleasures in life than walking along the nearby South Downs with the sea cliffs and the fresh breeze on the one side and the ancient sheep pastures on the other.

Why they chose this property

There is a huge sense of history at Pekes, an ancient Wealden hall house built in the 1470s with quite a few of its old features left in place. Eva's grandfather bought it in 1908, and little has changed since his day except facilities, comfort and warmth has been added. Gate Cottage is cosy, private and snug, with views over the parkland. Pekes has elegant gardens, parkland, lovely trees and wonderful views over the landscape.

What makes this property unique

Timelessness, peace, gardens, country walks, the sniff of the sea, loads of nearby activities and attractions.
