About The Owner

We are a family of 5 who bought both the main house as well as the little cottage in 2005. We were looking for a peaceful rural location that was close enough to roads and airports to make it convenient for use as a simple place to “get away from it all” as well as having a pleasant climate. Although we are not always at the property we have spent many enjoyable periods in the region.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why The Owner chose Turgon

As we were not planning to live there immediately, we were looking for a fully restored traditional Charentaise farmhouse with thick stone walls and oak beams. In spring 2005 “the perfect property” was found by one of the agents. We were pleasantly surprised to find that not only was Le Bijou Rouillé - the main house - restored in keeping with the regional style, but there was a second property on the land which we call "Le Petit Bijou". It had been restored externally but not internally and was also a stone farmhouse complete with original oak beams, however it was a shell. Since 2007 it has been fully renovated inside and we have added a pool in the courtyard. Our neighbours are friendly and private. The local roads and farm tracks are quiet and great for walking and cycling.

What makes this cottage unique

What do we love about our house and land? No urban light and regular crystal-clear skies! Fantastic for star gazing. No WiFi and cable internet access and no TV thus complete peace!. Plenty of empty roads, pretty towns and simple restaurants all within an hour in all directions. In general the region seems to be about 2-5 degrees warmer than southern England, although we have had some lovely snow storms in mid winter... Summer can be hot, but the clear skies mean the evenings are usually very pleasant for outdoor dining followed by a game of boules and a glass of wine or Pineau (local firewater).

Notes on accommodation: The lounge is heated with electric wall heaters that have individual thermostats. The cottage is a wonderful 'get away from it all' for couples. Sorry, we do not accept pets. This is a non-smoking property. Outside: The garden is about 1/4 hectare and consists of fruit trees and flowering shrubs. A walk around the grounds is a wonderful way to start the day with that first coffee. The enclosed, fully decked courtyard is accessed from the cottage's back door and provides a secluded spot for relaxing in the sun or shade around the 4m above-ground, private heated pool. Note that the pool is not at all child safe and thus the cottage is suitable for adults only - ie those who will respect the pool and take responsibility for their own safety. Chairs, tables and sun loungers are provided for your comfort. The terraced area of the courtyard provides shade during the day. By night the terrace has lighting so would be perfect for alfresco dinners or simply sitting outside and reading. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, bed linen and pool towels are included. The cottage is fully cleaned prior to your visit and should be left in a similar manner on your departure please. Towels and linen are changed after the first week of stay. Other: A small collection of books and DVDs/CDs are available but of course you are welcome to bring your own. 2 adult bicycles are available for your use. There are plenty of farm tracks for long countryside walks or rides in the fresh air. Off-street parking.

French Idyll

  • 5 of 5

Having spent a couple of days on the Ile de Ré with all its crowds, arriving at the cottage was an absolute delight. As soon as we drove into the drive and turned the engine off the quietness and stillness hit us, the only noise was a Turtle Dove calling - bliss. Its exactly what it says in the description.

The Cottage is perfect, It had nearly everything we needed for the two of us, the only thing missing was a couple of large cups for our morning coffee, but we bought a couple and left them behind - so now it has everything.

As a bird watcher I was delighted to find Golden Orioles, Black Redstarts and Nightjars in the area and the swallows seemed to delight in buzzing us when we were in the pool.

The surrounding area is typical of middle of nowhere France (in the nicest possible way) small hamlets, slightly larger villages and the occasional town with a supermarket and if you are lucky a restaurant - the nearest one we found was a 20 minute drive.

There are enough places to visit in the area to make full days out for a week or so, but equally chilling in the pool and garden was too nice some of the time to bother about site seeing.

The owners were away when we stayed which gave us the run of the property and garden, but for the very minor problem that we did have, they had left us a contact number for a local English couple who were around within 10 minutes of our call.

In conclusion - perfect, Highly recommend this place to anybody looking to get away from it all for a week or two.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your comments and the cups!! We advertise the cottage and its surrounds as a 'Get away from it all' and I think we achieve this. As owners we always plan our own holidays to ensure there are no overlaps with our guests so that they have complete and private use of the gardens and pool. So glad you enjoyed the local birdlife.

Everything you could want for a perfect break!

  • 5 of 5

Perfectly located for chateaux , castles, abbeys and lovely villages and the quite unique Oradour sur Glane all within 45 minutes of the cottage . The poolside is a real suntrap and the water warm enough for early morning and late evening dips. Bikes are an added bonus for exploring the vineyards and sunflower fields which surround the cottage and farm tracks leading from the door for walking. Although in the midst of the peace and quiet of the beautiful Charente countryside , shops, boulangeries, cafes and at least one excellent local restaurant only 15 minutes away (others slightly further afield). We had a great week with truly a little bit of everything!

Very nice

A beautiful quiet setting and a perfect cottage for two. The pool was a delight.

It just needs to be aired before people arrive (if this was possible), there were plug-in air fresheners which we turned up. As soon as the doors and windows were opened it did help.

We would be happy to stay here again.

Owner's Response: We really appreciate your comments but would add that the cottage is fully cleaned before guests' arrival and "freshened up" when we are aware of estimated arrival time. Occasionally guests are not able to keep to their schedule so we don't keep doors and windows open until arrival as this would pose a security risk and render our insurance invalid. We have to close windows and doors also to keep unwanted insects & small mammals out. They are much less likely to enter the cottage when it is occupied so yes, get those windows and doors open and let all that fresh air in.

A hidden gem in a beautiful part of France.

We have just enjoyed 12 days at Le petite bijou and what a lovely place it is. Nestled in the small hamlet of La Bertonnerie it is so peaceful. The pool was a boon during the first week as we experienced temperatures of 40C. This week was cooler and wet at times. Loads of beautiful places to visit within a 30 min drive. An hours drive will take you to Oradour sur Glane which is a must.

Many thanks to Ruth & Theron for allowing us to stay in the property. Thanks to Jude who made several visits to check on the pool and change linen etc. Lovely lady and very helpful.

We'd thoroughly recommend a visit if your a couple who enjoy peace, quiet, wildlife and beautiful countryside then this is the place for you.

A little piece of heaven here on earth.

We had a wonderful stay in Le Petit Bijou. A beautifully restored traditional French cottage with heated outdoor swimming pool. Nestled in the countryside it was the perfect escape from a very busy stress filled life. The clear night skies enabled much star gazing either from the comfort of the pool or by lying on the ground looking up. The weather was superb and we enjoyed visiting La Vallee des Singes, to see the monkeys and Apes in acre upon acre of beautiful grounds. Verteuil sur Charente was a beautiful town to visit and especially Le Moulin de Verteuil where we had a smashing lunch practising our French. The staff here were courteous and extremely helpful even telling my husband that he looked like James Martin.....I wish he could cook like him too!

This little gem is for people who wish to escape from everyday life and enjoy a complete break from computers, internet and tv. It is very rural and there is an abundance of wildlife to see, we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Lovely place to stay. All you need to get away from all.

On arriving, after a long drive, it would be nice to arrive to a house that had been aired. We found the house was abit stuffy. All the home comforts to speak of, except the fridge/freezer needed to be larger, as you are out in the country. Staying the length of time we did, you do need extra space in the freezer. You need to have more info on how to use the mirco-oven, also a info on how to use the washing machine. We did figure it out. Regarding the TV. either mention to bring your own DVD's, plus a radio would be nice as well. Other wise all went well. The pool was lovely and warm, as we had a couple of cool days. The bike's do need some maintenance, as we had to buy some oil for the chains, also they are on the small side for grown up's. The info left to guest's regarding the area, need's to be up dated We did have a couple of the furry locals visiting on a couple of occasions, which of the first was a small field mouse, that was fine, moved food box off floor, followed by one of the endangered species, called the Loir. Which lives in the roof with his/her family. Squirrel type rodent. We did mention this to the caretaker. It came down the stair wall one evening, to our surprise, our legs did go up on to the chairs, plus the sleep did not come that night until early morning, not knowing what it was or it's behaviour during the night. We only found out once we got home to the UK what it was. The sign to the house needs to be either, painted or made brighter, as we did go passed. We visited quite a few places in the area, as we had looked up most before arriving. To go out to a restaurant in the evening would not be a good idea, if you both wanted to have a drink or two. So stock up and enjoy the Oh! so quite, to quite sometimes. I would recommend this house to a person/persons who want to get away from all and everything. It was a wee bit isolated for us.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this review. The cottage is fully aired as practicably possible but we do need to close windows and doors in order to prevent nature from entering and taking up residence! The cottage does not offer enough space for a larger fridge freezer. The size details of the freezer compartment are clearly stated on the website. We do print some user instructions for the microwave which have proved enough in the past. We shall look into extending these. Regarding DVDs, we supply a collection at the cottage and again the website clearly states to bring your own if you wish. I think nowadays, travellers do bring their own audio equipment with them as units are so small to pack. Bikes. We used these in June and July as did all our guests this summer with no complaint. They were used by our own family who are 5 feet 9 inches tall. They are adult bikes. We shall leave some oil next year though and appreciate you applying some oil. The cottage is is the heart of the country and the website states this. Expect to see nature at its best, insects and small mammals. Consider this if peace & quiet is not for you. The cottage had a new roof this year and the creature in question could have entered via other always surprises us how small a gap is enough for them! We love the bats, birds and nature. We will not be painting up the cottage's good enough for the country. There is a local taxi service and the number is in the cottage. We encourage our guests to ask questions before booking. This is our home and we continue each year to enjoy the space and Star gazing. The owners.

Special interest holidays:

For car enthusiasts there is the Circuit Des Remparts in Angouleme each September - so if you have your own Classic Car or are simply a fan then you would be within easy reach of the action. (

Visit 'La Cote Sauvage' where you will find the popular seaside resorts of Royan, Ile de Rey and La Rochelle, with beaches, shops, bars and restaurants. Although about 2 hours away by car, the coast is well worth the trip. And there is go-karting on the outskirts of Royan (

The Lacs de Haute Charante ( are leisure lakes within an hour's drive. St Martin-l'Ars, a small town to the north, has a restaurant on a lake and there are nice walks, a restaurant and also canoes for rental.

There are a variety of ways to access our cottage and the French roads are not only in excellent condition but are usually quiet, allowing for stress-free motoring for much of the year (weekends can be busy in July/August). Limoges airport and Poitiers airport are a 1 hour drive. La Rochelle airport is 2 hours drive. Bordeaux airport and Bergerac airport are 3+ hours drive. Angouleme train station is a 1 hour drive (TGV train to Paris is 3 hours). Ruffec train station (also TGV) is 25 mins drive.

Our nearest town of Champagne Mouton has a bar, supermarket, doctors, petrol, post office and bakers and is about 10 mins drive away. Ruffec or Confolens are both about 30mins or less away and have large supermarkets, shops and restaurants.

Further Details:

The best place for canoeing we have found over the past 10 years is near Ruffec / Condac, about 25mins drive away from the cottage, called "aire de rejallant" on the Charente river where they have all the equipment and a variety of packages to suit your needs - from a short paddle around the area to a 3 hour canoe down the river. And they'll come and pick you up down river in their van. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon in dappled shade, cool water and warm sunshine.

Confolens is a very picturesque town on the Vienne river with a 13th century bridge and surrounded by rolling pastoral countryside. It is about 25 mins away by car. Pedalo hire is available from late spring. On the way to Confolens are large supermarkets.

The walled town of Angouleme is situated on a hill, and is an hour away to the south. The town looks down on to the river Charente. The centre of town has a magnificent town hall along with many restaurants, bars and shops, and many narrow streets to explore. There is a Circuit Des Remparts vintage car motor race every September through the cobbled streets. Angouleme has ‘murs peints’, which are street-art cartoon style paintings on walls around the town. From May to September you can often wakeboard or water-ski on the Charente at Saint Cybard, under the ancient stone walls of the town, where there is a water sport centre/school (not always open - check on the website and call them

Cognac and Jarnac, with mile after mile of brandy vineyards, are to the west of La Bertonnerie, and, about 2 hours or less from the cottage, is the seaside town of Royan on Le Cote Sauvage. Near Royan is the Zoo at La Palmyre in 14+ hectares of landscaped gardens. The zoo is very popular and tries to improve the quality of the animals' lives and plays an important role in reintroducing animals into their natural habitats.

If you are interested in animals then the Vallee des Singes to the north of La Bertonnerie is a must-to-visit to see many varieties of monkeys and apes in an open environment.

The Charente and Vienne rivers wind their way through the region and there are many picturesque villages and towns to visit for lunch or simply pause for a coffee and a pastry as you pass through. These include Nanteuil-en-Vallee, with its 11th Century Abbey and gardens, and Rochefoucauld and Verteuil, both with stunning chateaux.
