About this property

Charming Hilltop Accommodation With Outstanding Views

Sablet is a village where the people you will meet in the cafes and shops are your neighbours who live and work in the village or the surrounding area. Literally 2 minutes walk from Les Maisons are the shops, cafes and restaurants that provide a convenience to your daily life whilst here. Many wineries can be found within walking distance of Les Maisons. There are 2 boulangeries (bakeries), 2 epiceries (convenience markets), a boucherie (butcher), a fleuriste, a tabac – presse, where you can pick up your daily copy of the local and Parisian daily newspapers as well as the International Herald Tribune, a banque (with cash machine), post office and medical center with on duty doctors and a dentist. The Café des Sports is a great place to relax over a café au lait, or an early evening aperitif, maybe before dinner at one of the neighboring restaurants - Le Cornucopia, Les Remparts -or the Pizza Comme Di where you can dine outdoors in the square.

The house is just wonderful and located in the heart of the picturesque medieval village of Sablet. Very clean, practical, comfortable! Property manager (Nadia) is simply amazing!

Beautify house in a great location
Two couples stayed here for a long weekend. The house is a beautiful house in the old town, in a great location. We parked in the town parking and walked the few minutes to the house. The house is very well furnished with all the necessary mod-cons. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are large. There was no noise or light pollution at night. The view from the roof terrace was amazing. We had other friends who stayed in other rental properties in the town and none came close to this one. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Unexpected gem
The property is beautifully decorated with all the amenities of ones own home The proprietor was friendly and enormously helpful in getting our luggage up to his charming house. The only difficult experience was our inability to park our car in front of the house due to extremely narrow road leading to the house. This required us to either use the 39 steps going up and down to the village and to our car or down the winding roads. In both cases the time it took to navigate our descend or ascend took no more than 3-5 minutes. Being older this was a bit of a struggle for us. There is a fabulous pastry shop at the bottom of the house along with a well equipped grocery store. Altogether A pleasant experience.

Provençal adventure
Delightful property in the hilltop town of Sablet. We loved being one of the locals buying our groceries in the neighbourhood shops. We got to know the local bar owner well! Our hosts Tony and Mary were fantastic at settling us in, and gave us top tips for the area. A beautiful setting to become French for a few weeks.

Still amazing!
This was our second stay at Sablet. We returned because we love the small village life and the beautiful villages around. The house is spotlessly clean and Tony and Mary are only a short distance away if you ever need anything as is Nadia. We love it that is why we returned.

About the host

Hosted by Tony Byrne

Host profile image
Hi,
We are Mary & Tony Byrne, an almost retired couple who fell in love with Provence and Sablet when really close friends of ours bought a house in the village in 2004. Our friends alerted us La Grande Maison in late 2006, mind you at that time is was not so grand.

Over the next 18 months there was lots of work from our builders, Patrice and Jean Claude and many hours from Mary & I, family and friends, who probably did not know what they were getting themselves in for when invited to join us in Provence.

Now we have 3 lovely bedrooms in the main house and a separate self contained apartment. We live in Perth in Australia but try and spend 3 months or so in Sablet each year, usually in the apartment.

We love the village and the friends we have made there, in fact we love it so much we are renovating another villa just a stones throw away on the other side of the church. We hope that it will be completed in time for renting in 2020. We completed the pool and outdoor lounge area while we were there this year and are happy to make it available to guests in the main house and apartment until work recommences in November 2019.

We would love to meet you if you happen to be staying while we are there and would be more than happy to show you around the many and varied highlights of the area.

Why they chose this property

Sablet is a small living French village perched atop a hill and surrounded by vineyards. It is not on the tourist route, no tour buses and yet it has all you need in terms of shops, bars, and dining from standard to 5 star.

We did not really intend to buy. We fell in love with the place after spending some time with our friends and when the opportunity presented itself we jumped at it.

Not normally so impetuous but delighted with the decision.

What makes this property unique

When we stay in Sablet we spend some time working on the house, there is always something to do. And then we either relax in the village or visit the nearby towns. Even now after 11 years we are still discovering jewels within 30 minutes of home.

I suppose the thing we look forward to most is spending some time on the terrace of a summers evening with a glass of local red wine and 360 degree views over the Cote du Rhone.

We love to relax at the Cafe de Sports with Bruno and Sylvie and the fine dining at Le Bistro les Copain just next to the bar.

One of the great things about Sablet is its self sufficiency. You can get everything you need in the village. There is of course the bar, fine dining at the Bistro and La Table de Magdali, food and other essentials at Alain and Mimi's small supermarket and fresh meat at the butchers. There are two patisseries, two hairdressers, a florist, a Tabac and a beauty salon. The local tourist bureau doubles as wine degustation where you can taste and buy wine from all the local vignerons at cellar door prices.

The village is backed by the Dentelles a lovely range of forested hills with loads of walking paths to suit all tastes from challenging to gentle.

Bike riding is of course a French passion and there are many bike routes through picturesque villages. There are lots of suggestions on our website.
