About this property

Renovated Farmhouse with Private Pool

La Canardière is a lovingly restored, (renovations finished in 2022) character farmhouse in a tranquil, elevated setting, yet conveniently just minutes away from the village of St Antonin-du-Var and 8kms from Lorgues with its fabulous weekly market. It has its own private, floodlit pool with pool alarm, located on one of the terraces below the house complete with its own outdoor bar and plenty of sun loungers. The main house has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, dining room and a cave for cool storage and is surrounded by shady terraces for outdoor dining and seating, making the most of the glorious views. There is a guest cottage in the grounds that sleeps two and has its own modest facilities and an outdoor shower! Around the house, the grounds are extensive, terraced and rambling with olive and fruit trees, lavender and plenty of wild Provençal herbs you can use in your cooking. There's an outdoor table tennis table, boules, barbecue, a hammock and toys and games for kids.

La Canardière is ideal for families or for groups of individuals. It has been in our family for 30 years and these days it is looked after by three sisters, Caroline, Marita and Julie, and managed for us by a local team, who will be there to welcome you and are a phone call away in case of need.

The location is rural yet convenient and wonderful for exploring the surroundings. The village of Saint Antonin-du-Var has its own bakery, shop, post office, tennis court, and friendly hotel, bar and restaurant, as well as the best pizza ever, made with fresh and organic local ingredients and baked in a wood-fired oven by the lady with the pizza stand in the main square. Not to mention a few wineries, including Les Treilles d'Antonin which we thoroughly recommend. Lorgues, 15 minutes away, has a superb weekly Provençal market. The beautiful 'village in the sky', Tourtour is a must-visit, as is the 'Grand Canyon' of Provence, the Gorges du Verdon, to the north. The coast is 45 minutes' drive to the south, so a fun day trip, and we can recommend the boat crossing from the harbour of Ste Maxime as a great way to visit St Tropez without the hassle of traffic jams and parking.

For the active, nearby activities including kayaking and rafting, horse riding, cycling, walking and wild swimming in nearby rivers. The trail that follows the disused railway track runs not far from the house and is an easy, level cycle ride to Lorgues and beyond in one direction and to the pottery town of Salernes in the other. For road biking enthusiasts, La Canardière is really well situated for some superb rides and we are working to make it more bike friendly, with room to store bikes in the garage and basic tools and bike washing facilities. May, June and September are ideal for biking, with the weather usually pleasant and the roads less busy than in July and August. There are also a number of beautiful golf courses within reach.

There are some excellent restaurants in and around Lorgues and we have lots of recommendations for wineries, restaurants and places to visit which you will find in a folder on your arrival. We also regularly post interesting activities, new finds and more photos on the La Canardière Facebook page.

A wonderful relaxing farmhouse
We enjoyed the most relaxing stay two week stay in this lovely Provencal farmhouse. The location is fabulous - stunning views over rolling wooded hillsides. The pool is perfect, as are the terraces which are perfect for long relaxed meals. The house is only a short drive (or slightly longer walk) from the local village, with a boulangerie, a store and bar/restaurant. It is also in surrounded by some excellent vineyards and caves. I can't think of any box it doesn't tick.

The Perfect Week in Provence
La Canardière, in St. Antonin-du-Var, is the perfect place to unwind, relax and experience the Provençal lifestyle. The location couldn't be more beautiful. It's a classic house, full of light and with plenty of space, but the reality is that you spend all of your time outside -- on the terrace having meals or down by (or in) the pool. When we arrived, we were a bit worried that our kids would get bored, but they never wanted to leave the grounds -- we practically had to drag them away to short visits to nearby villages of Cotignac, Entrecasteaux and the Lorgues market. The location is perfect -- you can stock up on staples in Lorgues and there's a small grocery in St. Antonin, along with a boulangerie for the morning croissant/baguette run (on one to the bikes provided by the owners), and a winery that makes an award-winning rosé. What's hard to describe is the delightful way that the world slows down and becomes very simple. It's quiet; it's private; you can spend hours by the pool with a book in the warm, dry sun, periodically cooling off in the gorgeous, recently renovated pool, taking in the lush gardens and the surrounding landscape. Eating on the terrace is a highlight of every day. In short, a week at La Canardière is a true vacation.

True Provence
Our family has stayed several times at La Canardiere, dating back to 1984, and we continue to book visits whenever possible. It is almost impossible to accurately describe the glorious Provencal lifestyle we experience while over there: wonderful local food & wine, picturesque medieval town squares, warm sunny weather, stunning countryside and relaxing smells of lavender, rosemary and thyme growing wild on the property. Early on we plotted multiple excursions to the nearby sites but now we simply laze by the pool, run & bike in the hills, enjoy huge home-cooked family meals on the terrace overlooking a serene view, and pop in on various farmer's markets and local vineyards. The house is perfect for extended families of all ages and types, or even for a gathering of 3-5 couples.

Fabulous Property
We have stayed at La Canardiere four times over the last few years and have always had a lovely holiday. The house itself has all the creature comforts you could possibly want with the added bonus of peaceful seclusion and spectacular views. With a small supermarket nearby and beautiful local market towns to visit, you are never without wonderful produce and wines. Lots of things to do in the area too from kayaking to wine tasting to visiting the glitzier resort of St Tropez.

This is a family house bought by my parents in the early 1980's and now owned by myself and my two sisters. We use it ourselves as much as we are able and we let it out the rest of the time. I live in the UK and my sisters in France and Switzerland.

Why they chose this property

My parents fell in love with this part of France whilst visiting relatives who lived nearby in Cotignac. They bought the house and spent many happy retirement years improving it, building the cabanon, the pool and entertaining guests and friends. It's a beautiful rural area but with easy access to various airports (Nice and Marseilles). Its possible to be peaceful and quiet and explore the local villages, markets and countryside but if you are in need of some bright lights St Tropez and the rest of the Cote d'Azur and its beaches are easy to get to. Another wonderful day out is a visit to the Gorges du Verdon - France's answer to the Grand Canyon. We love taking canoes up the Gorge and swimming in the turquoise water of the lake.
