About Wilford Welch

Wilford is a former U.S. diplomat (China), author, (a 2018 book entitled In Our Hands - A Handbook for Intergenerational Actions to Solve the Climate Crisis), and public speaker. Carole's background is in anthropology. In 1991, Carole founded Cross Cultural Journeys, a successful travel company that takes clients to exotic international destinations where indigenous people continue to live in traditional ways. While there we explore the healing and belief systems of the indigenous elders. We both have a lifetime of international travel and work behind and in front of us. Our home reflects our interests and adventures.

Wilford Welch purchased this house boat in 2001

Why Wilford Welch chose Sausalito

We enjoy living 'on the docks' in Sausalito. We moved here from Belvedere, CA. because we found the houseboat community filled with interesting, creative people with a casual, unpretentious, active, lifestyle. Being only 20 minutes by car to the middle of San Francisco for cultural, educational and social activities, and less than an hour from Napa and Sonoma and the beautiful wine country, are all big pluses. Hiking is five minutes away and the restaurants are great nearby. We feel we have the best of many worlds right here. We call our houseboat 'Dol Khiyam, a Tibetan phrase which loosely translated means 'A place of rest, in the midst of a busy world'. That is the feeling we hope for all our guests.

What makes this house boat unique

Ours is a home that is ideal for a couple (or two) that appreciates the finer things in life and would like to relax and entertain in style in one of the most unique homes in the San Francisco Bay area all within minutes of everything that the San Francisco Bay area has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We absolutely appreciate having the opportunity to enjoy your home. You have an amazing collection of artifacts and the most beautiful home in the area. We really enjoyed the deck upstairs, the cozy atmosphere and the collection of books. This was a first-time experience for all of us and everything went so smoothly. We truly felt at home here - thank you again!

Lovely houseboat

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay on the houseboat. I lived on one previously, for 15 years so it was a homecoming for me. Friendly neighbors and of course a wonderful location.

Amazing Houseboat in Sausalito

  • 5 of 5

This is the third time that we have booked a houseboat in Sausalito. While all of our experiences have been positive, this boat was by far, the nicest, decorated with art from around the world, comfortable beds and living area and an amazing deck on top of the house overlooking the bay. The houseboat is walking distance from many businesses and restaurants and a walk or bike ride from downtown Sausalito. The owner was helpful, friendly and accommodating in every way. I can not say enough about the boat, the owner and the overall experience. Thank you Wilford!

The Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Cosy, quirky and comfortable. Such an interesting home with all the many different artefacts and books around for you to enjoy. They reminded us so much of places we have lived in or travelled through, maybe that is why we felt so at home !

Thank you for sharing your home Wilford and also thank you to Gail and Kathy who were so helpful with restaurant suggestions and recommendations on where to visit.

We have had a wonderful stay and thank you for the wine !

Houseboat Heaven

  • 5 of 5

An absolute magical vacation for our family of 6. The boys and girls all enjoyed the Kayaks, roof top, and the various quiet reading nooks throughout this very spacious houseboat. A fabulous location to venture off to Napa, the East Bay, and of course all the magnificent sites of San Fran. Loved meeting the owners and learning all about their favorite travel destinations as the HB is filled with treasures from near and far.

Magnificent & Magical

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 10 heavenly days and enjoyed every second. Wilford & Carole and their floating home haven is a true sanctuary. We kayaked every day and reveled in the hot tub, bedroom fireplace and all the art, and the VERY creatively inspiring environment. Luxury, adventure and the best of being "at home" while away.

A Perfect Trip!

  • 5 of 5

There is nothing I can say about Wilford and Carole and their fabulous houseboat that hasn't already been said. My husband, myself and another couple had the pleasure of spending time here and every day was perfect. We did tons of sightseeing in San Francisco, as well as the Napa Valley Wine Train, which is a must, and everything was easy to get to. We all agreed that the best part of the trip was knowing that we would be returning each afternoon or evening to our exciting accommodations. It made us all smile! We plan on returning in the very near future. Thanks again Wilford and Carole "for the memories".

Paddle board rentals are available within a mile of our houseboat. We have two kayaks and two bikes at the houseboat with the whole Richardson Bay for kayaking and miles of walking, running, and bike trails available from the houseboat, through a bird preserve and along the Bay. Our local gym is a five minute walk. It is a twenty minute walk or a five minute drive to a trailhead and miles of hiking trails with views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco.

A ten minute ferry ride from Tiburon takes you to Angel Island, which is protected park land with a 360 degree view of Richardson Bay. It was originally a hunting and fishing site for the Miwok Indians and later an army post during the Civil War., it was the "Ellis Island of the West", the entrance for Asians that were brought to San Francisco as workers for the gold mines and railroads between 1910 and 1940.

Day trips to Napa Valley and Sonoma wineries for wine tasting are fun as are hiking in the Pt. Reyes Wilderness area passing through the picturesque Anderson Valley on the way to Western Marin. The Anderson Valley is rural like Napa used to be and has many fine wineries there also with wine tasting. Muir Woods is close by and presents an opportunity to walk amongst the huge, ancient redwood trees.

There is excellent theatre in San Francisco. Mill Valley and Berkeley Repertory theaters are excellent also. A "not to miss" is a twenty five minute ride on the ferry from Sausalito harbor passing Angel Island and Alcatraz Island (tours are available) to arrive at Fishermans Wharf for lunch, see the hundreds of sea lions sunbathing off nearby pier 39, visit Ghirardelli Square and enjoy the tourist shops. Or, you can take a different ferry also from Sausalito which disembarks at the Embarcadero Building, with its excellent selection local purveyors of fine food items and a weekend farmers market. Next, for a thrill, ride the historic cable cars on the famous up and down hills of San Francisco. Locals still use the cable cars for transportation. You can get tickets to a performance of the world renowned San Francisco Symphony, or Beach Blanket Babylon, which is a local production that has been a tourist and local favorite for many years. Visit the zoo or spend the day at Golden Gate Park visiting the de Young Museum, the Botanical Gardens, the Conservancy of Flowers or the Japanese Gardens. If you have energy left you could visit the Coit Tower, a 210 foot Art Deco tower built in 1929 or the Exploratorium, an Inquiry based (hands on) Museum of Science that kids of all ages love. There is also the Asian Art Museum and the Legion of Honor Museum. Save some time because San Francisco is known for its shopping and world class restaurants. Drive by the new Sales Force Building; cruise through the Haight Ashbury hippie area from the Summer of Love and the University of California at San Francisco.

Near Oakland in the East bay is the University of California at Berkeley which has an interesting, expansive campus. In Sausalito there are exhibitions at the historical society of the former shipbuilding community of Sausalito and its history as it evolved when the Golden Gate Bridge was built. Walk the docks of the town and view the yachts and houseboat communities that are an integral part of this picturesque town. Wander the waterfront, the boutique shops, the excellent restaurants and tourist spots. There are walking paths above the town that wind amongst the beautiful homes on the hills. You can explore on your own with a map, or tours are available. A couple of our favorite places to eat are Poggio's or Bar Bocce, a casual place where you can eat outside, play or watch bocce ball.

Historic Ft. Mason is worth a visit, it is now the Cavalho Point Resort and Conference center but has kept the facade of a WW II Navy base complete with parade grounds. The bar at Cavalho Point is also a favorite spot for a casual drink or lite evening meal. The Discovery Museum for children is there also, as are historic WW II bunkers you can explore on the hills above Cavalho Point.

A favorite drive of ours is the scenic ocean view road past Cavalho Point and the Golden Gate Bridge to Rodeo Beach. On the way you will pass a few historic Army and Air Force sites where you can stop and walk the areas. You will pass the Point Bonita Lighthouse, built in 1855, and still functioning today. It is worthwhile to take the tour. Upon arrival at Rodeo Beach you can walk the beach or the miles of ocean view trails in the hills surrounding the beach. When returning to Sausalito, you might stop for a tour of the Marine Mammal Center, which is a facility for emergency rescue care for marine mammals. After a day's activity, you return to the houseboat for a barbecue on the roof terrace or to just sit with a glass of Napa or Anderson Valley wine and watch the sun set over Mt. Tam. while you reflect on the day.
