Born in Mexico City, Ricardo Montalbán was the most well-mannered, wholesome, honorable, and decent of all movie stars. When he walked through a room, relaxed and impeccably tailored, he seemed to leave a trail of integrity and authenticity. Best-known for his TV role as Mr. Roarke in the series “Fantasy Island,” which he played from 1978 until 1984.

About Lynn Carlton

I have always loved to fix and design. When I began my real estate career at 24, I soon realized that the best part of the job was meeting with architects and interior designers and watching as the more artistic elements of construction fell into place. After 13 years in real estate, I built two homes, vacation rentals on magical Orcas Island in Washington State. Then I undertook a major remodel of a cabin on the water. Something clicked during that process of transforming the cabin into a unique work of art; I knew I had found my purpose in life.

Through the next several years, I transformed some 30 rather decrepit homes into fresh, beautiful residences, working tirelessly at the rate of two or three a year. Then I decided to turn my creative attention to designing and constructing very special vacation accommodations. I moved to Mexico, the land of color and craft, and began working there.

The most exciting phase of building a new place is when everything gets pulled together. I love the details, making sure that one thing plays with another in perfect harmony. During the process, I'm absolutely consumed. Each project takes every ounce of my imaginative life -- and I love it.

I enjoy being able to see the possibilities in a wreck of a dwelling. When I first set eyes on a place in need of a make-over, I see what it could be. I can envision how the finished place will look...and that vision guides me.

I work an average of six to eight months on each project, directing a local architect and construction team, supervising every step along the way to make certain my vision is embodied in bricks and mortar, paint and plaster.

Be my guest at one of four different and individually unique accommodations in San Miguel de Allende.

Why Lynn Carlton chose Zona Centro

San Miguel is a beautiful old colonial town. The importance of the arts scene is very alluring. This is 1 of 4 apartments located in this beautiful building, named The Actors' Studios in recognition of Mexicans who became famous international actors

What makes this studio unique

This location is perfect because it's near many of the most frequented spots for travelers, such as the Artisans' Market or the Jardín. The terrace offers stunning views of sunrises and sunsets, and also of the firework displays on special days.

Great location. 10-11 minute walk to town center and another 10-15 minutes beyond to where the "Americans" congregate. GREAT little organic restaurant down the street (at about # 46-48 Animas) for about the best breakfast I've had ANYWHERE. Lunch too. How they earn a living with the low prices has us befuddled.

The very large market was a 4-5 minute walk on the way into town, and the source for endless people watching, fresh food, and many craft stalls in the far back of the market, also accessible from the next street over.

As "American" as it is suppose to be, the vast majority of people don't speak enough English to communicate well.

The room/apartment was small and dark. Bathroom tiny and poor lighting so putting makeup on was problematic, though they did try their best to make it work. The breezeway shaft to the roof gave us some ventilation, but the upstairs people commented that they could hear every word of our conversations. If closed there was no ventilation. Shade had to be down on the only window, otherwise the couple sharing the courtyard would essentially be living with us. Needless to say the door had to be closed.

The place was clean when we arrived, and the maid showed up again 3 days later, but we had to call again 4 days later to empty overflowing trash, clean towels, etc.

My lady says she wouldn't go back. I would. After all, we just needed a place to sleep, make tea, and keep leftovers cold. For the price, it was worth it.

Everything was well organized which made our stay so relaxing. Pre-arrival contacts really helped coordinate smooth check-in. Since we were there in January the temperature at night was very cool but the remote controlled fireplace (we have one at our home) made it very cozy and home like.

Convenient comfortable self-contained unit for a short or long stay.

  • 4 of 5

Location location location, it's in a perfect location right around the corner from the main market. Five minutes max to the main plaza and all of the main activity in San Miguel. The unit was well equipped with everything I needed for a two-week stay. For myself I know I need more light, this unit was a bit dark for me. Having said that though it was always cool and a great spot to come back and have a siesta. Highly recommend it for a short or long stay in San Miguel.

4th Time at this Gem in San Miguel

  • 5 of 5

When we think of returning to San Miguel de Allende, Animas #8 is our first consideration. There have been a lot of changes and upgrades since our first visit in 2006 when we lucked into this charming property. This time we returned to the Ricardo Montalban studio, a well-appointed, ground floor apartment that opens onto the communal courtyard. It contains everything one needs for a week or for a month or more: a comfortable bed, the ability to cook, and a great location. We love the place as it is near el Centro and the largest mercado in SMA, it's convenient to several other neighborhoods and great eateries, and it has the feeling of being in a more traditional setting. With four apartments in the compound, it's fun to meet other residents and share experiences. We've made long-lasting friendships with folks we've met on Animas. When returning to San Miguel, it's our first consideration for lodging.

The apartments are well maintained by the friendly and hard-working Azucena, who does whatever she can to make your stay pleasant. The management and their staff address any question or concerns promptly and efficiently.
