About Doreen and Jon Schmidt

Doreen and Jon live in Coon Rapids with their 3 kids and dog Peanut. Doreen works as a financial advisor and insurance agent and Jon the owner of a window treatments business. They enjoy outdoor sports, spending time with family and friends and entertaining their creative sides of building and repurposing furniture and home decor as well as photography and art work. We hope to display these works and home furnishings in our "Upper Hay Getaway" cabin.

Doreen and Jon Schmidt purchased this cabin in 2015

Why Doreen and Jon Schmidt chose Pequot Lakes

We chose this property because we absolutely love the Brainerd/Baxter/Nisswa area but don't need to be in the heart of the hustle and bustle of these very active areas, including the Whitefish Chain of Lakes - we are close enough to visit but have the quaint coziness of our cabin on beautiful Upper Hay. We also see lots of potential to get creative with our cabin through the years by renovating piece by piece to achieve a combination of rustic and modern while keeping it cozy. We recently refaced the kitchen cabinets and we couldn't be more thrilled with how it turned out. We hope to create an atmosphere where our renters want to return year after year and make it a tradition for their family to visit and follow us through our renovations.

There are bunks in both rooms with double on the bottom and singles on the top and separate queen bed in each room. 2 futons in the lv room for sleeping as well.

What makes this cabin unique

Some of the benefits! Sandy beach and acreage for kids to run and explore. Very quiet and serene and great fishing. The lake shore is shallow for about 30 feet out which makes it comforting for little ones, easy for a game of beach volleyball or just easy in and out.

Fun and relaxing family cabin retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six had a wonderful time during our stay. With four kids ranging from 4 to 9 years old, there was plenty to do for everyone throughout our Memorial Day weekend stay. Swimming right off of the dock, kayaking, time on the SUPs and playing on the Lillypad occupied endless hours. The rope swings, tetherball, bean bag toss and fire pit were nice outdoor options as well when we weren’t in the water. Inside the cabin was nicely appointed with lots of board games, puzzles, books, DVDs and a 50” flat screen with Netflix for times when weather may not permit for outdoor activities. Great sun porch as well.

Best of all, the owners (Doreen and Jon) were exceptionally responsive on any questions or requests that we had prior to, and during our stay. They were always fast to repsond and had a very service oriented approach.

On our last day, our kids asked if we could come back every Memorial Day weekend as a tradition. I think that aptly summarizes how we felt about or time at the cabin on Upper Hay Lake. Nicely done, Doreen and Jon!

Very very nice cabin and location.

Everything you could want is here. Nice quiet, secluded place. Fires at night were awesome. Fishing off the dock was entertaining but only one keeper which we cleaned and ate on the spot. Next year we plan to bring a boat.
