Swim, Snorkel, Dive from this Oceanfront Treasure

Bedrooms 1
Property type townhome
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

Spectacular location overlooking sea w/amazing 220° views. 1 bedroom, 2 baths.

Come to Curaçao to swim, dive, snorkel – or simply relax before breathtaking ocean and island views – and discover the tropical paradise that inspired the owners to write the island's current best-selling novel, "The Navigator's Treasure".

Our 2-story, 1-bedroom townhome in the beautiful west of Curaçao is ideal for those who define vacation as setting their own pace, doing what they want when they want – and not a thing more. Rushing around to check off a list of "must-do" activities from a mega-resort concierge sounds too much like work. Isn't that what you're getting away from?

You can't resist falling in love with the island, and Westpunt in particular, just as we did. It took our breath away 10 years ago when we first rounded the horseshoe bend at Playa Forti and saw crystal-clear turquoise water lapping brightly colored fishing boats down in the bay. We sat on the rock wall 30' above the water until the sun slipped off the edge of the earth in a spectacular green flash – both of us swearing we heard a whisper, "If you come, we will build it." So we did, buying our first villa at Marazul Dive Resort the very next day.

Now we're back in a newly expanded and renovated apartment (with all the upgrades we coveted). Perched just 40' from the edge of the plateau, we enjoy our small gated resort's most expansive ocean-front view – 220° of Caribbean waters teeming with fish, turtles, dolphins -- a dream-come-true for sea-life lovers from around the world. You'd expect no less from a place where the reef across the bay is called "Alice in Wonderland"!

Our place is literally our "home away from home" – we live here three or four months a year. That means everything, from furniture and mattress, widescreen TV and huge fridge, to cutlery and cushions, has home quality and comfort. Fact is, we actually handcrafted most of the furniture. The truly comfortable futon on the first floor also accommodates an additional guest or family member.

We commissioned new wall-to-wall sliding glass doors, along with screened & louvered kitchen entry and side windows to take full advantage of the constant trade winds that cool the West without compromising security.

The lanai out front -- so large it comfortably seats 4 -- is ideal for breakfasts and watching the iguana wake up on the rock wall, while the upstairs balcony opens the view even more. We eat dinner there most nights, nursing our wine as the sky goes from screaming orange and pink to a breathless darkness peppered with silver stars.

Pluses include a new 42" flat-screen with Direct TV, DVD, our own dedicated wireless internet, new fridge, new microwave, hot-water kitchen and showers both upstairs and down, air conditioners & ceiling fans upstairs and down, writing table and large wood dining table that easily accommodates 6. Linens, bath and pool towels are also provided.

The cliff edge is just steps away from our front door, and it's only a minute's stroll to the resort's salt-water pool, nestled among lush tropical plants – enough to be close, but far enough for optimum privacy and quiet. At each end of the resort, stairs cut into the coral wall provide direct access to the sea. A few strokes in the ever-warm water take snorkelers over or divers into a reef renowned for its bountiful, healthy sea life.

There's so much to do, but if you want to spend your week or two just polishing your tan and your napping technique, no one will bother you. Perhaps you'll be inspired to sequester yourself and write a novel as we did. However, as vacationers seem constitutionally incapable of being anything but friendly, you're bound to meet new friends.

"Perambulating along the perimeter" at dusk is a Marazul tradition where everyone gathers, drink in hand, in hopes of catching the elusive, green flash at sunset. It's been the start of unforgettable evenings enlivened by green and yellow parakeets streaking across the sky, the scent of fresh wahoo crisping on the grill, the tang of lionfish ceviche accompanied by a chilled little white wine. As you'll come to say -- "It's just another day in Paradise."

Guest Access

Everything at our townhome and in our community of owners and guests from around the world is designed to make your vacation perfect -- from our new, 2nd floor writer's nook where you can email friends descriptions of the fabulous view out your window...the sparkling pool with shady gazebo and sun chairs...the rustling palms and brilliant flowers dotting the grounds.

Interaction with Guests

To ensure you have a wonderful time and take advantage of all our home and the island have to offer, we'll provide a Welcome Booklet in advance with directions, suggestions, etc. Of course, we're available by email or phone most any time to answer your questions. We are also very lucky to have Rene, an exceptionally knowledgeable and extremely personable manager, on site who's always willing to help.

The Neighborhood

By design, 10B is away from the crowds, but we're not isolated. Five of the island's top 5 of 38 beaches are just minutes from our door (exquisite Playa Knip, one of our very favorites, is a beautiful 5-minute drive), as are restaurants that have been rated #1, #2 and #3 – unmatched Sol Food canted out over the hillside across the bay; Landhuis Misje, an epicurean wonder; and elegant but earthy Trio Pinotti. In addition to our world-famous 'Alice in Wonderland' reef, the West is home to two National Parks, including wild, wave-crashing Shete Boka and jungle-like Mt. Christoffel, where a roller-coaster drive takes you to landuis ruins, glorious views, fascinating flora and elusive fauna, and the trailhead leading to the summit of Curaçao's highest peak.

Getting Around

The entire island of Curaçao has so much to offer, you'll want to rent a car to get out and explore (we'll recommend the local agency we use 100% of the time -- it's the best). The West is just the beginning. Farther afield, there's the capital city of Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a stunning array of brightly painted Old World-style buildings, the Queen Emma pontoon pedestrian bridge (affectionately known as the Old Lady) spanning St. Anna Bay and linking both sides of the town -- museums, restaurants, and the oldest synagogue in the New World. And don't miss the flamingos, ostriches, wind-surfing, casinos, incredible shopping, history and more -- because there truly is something for everyone!

Note: "The Navigator's Treasure" by D.C. Monahan is available at select locations on the island. You can also purchase the Kindle version on Amazon, and the paperback edition direct from Nubble Mt. Press.
