Perfect place for our family adventure

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place for our family to gather together to spend a few days for Thanksgiving. We were there with seven adults, and six young children. The house was clean and ready for us when we got there, and the amenities were everything that we needed. The kitchen is large and well-equipped which was great for all of us to work together to prepare Thanksgiving dinner. They had even thoughtfully provided a large foil turkey roasting pan for us. The kids enjoyed running about the large open space in the house and there were enough sleeping spaces for each family to have privacy at night. The kids also enjoyed the green space in back and we took many "adventure walks" back there and enjoyed the deer that would wander through mornings and evenings. And kids being kids, it was great to have the laundry room with supplies provided so that we could do several loads of wash. The house was close to the aquarium and the beach...two places we knew we wanted to see. The manager, Paul, was very helpful when one of the little children played with the remote and we were unable to make it work, and told us how to get to the beach and the grocery store, etc. He was great whenever we needed him, but not at all intrusive. We did most of our own cooking because that's part of the fun for us, but did enjoy a lovely dinner at The C. We loved the Monterey Bay Aquarium, though it was VERY busy, and also loved the 17 mile drive and a visit to Carmel-by-the-Sea. We found the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary to be beautiful and kid-friendly. And then of course there was the beach...just a few blocks from the house. We spent a lot of time there. We had a wonderful time together, would definitely recommend this property to a friend, and hope to go back ourselves again sometime.

Loved it!!

  • 5 of 5

My large family of 12 was very comfortable. The teens had their space, the adults had their' sand the little kids loved the back wooded area. As we were leaving they were all talking about when we would come back again.

The home is spacious and comfortable. We had 14 adults for my son's wedding in Monterey.

  • 4 of 5

We brought the bride and groom's families to Monterey for our son's wedding and enjoyed our stay at this home. It provided us with plenty of space for 14 adults to enjoy ourselves without tripping over each other.

The property manager is extremely helpful and quick to respond to questions.

It was a little difficult to cook large meals as many of the cookie sheets don't fit in the wall ovens and there were no lids for the large skillets. A larger microwave would be helpful, too.

Our only complaint was ants in the kitchen and bugs on the fireplace mantle and spiders in the living room.

The home is conveniently located.

Definitely take an afternoon and do 17 Mile Drive. Stunning scenery.

Perfect Family Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Great memories were made in this comfortable home! The owner Mike Bitar made the experience even better by purchasing some new kitchen supplies knowing we were were cooks and planned to have a gourmet family Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for that! The kitchen was amazing for several of us to work together without bumping into each other, even better!

There were a total of 10 of us, six adults and four kids, 3 generations. We all had our own bedrooms. The kids room upstairs had beds for each of them. They loved having their own room. All the beds were so comfortable, my daughter wanted to take her bed home and now plans to buy that same mattress. We had extended family come from Sacramento, Dallas and Montana to join us for Thanksgiving dinner. They stayed in Monterrey but were envious of our cozy home away from home! There were two large dining room tables which accommodated all the adults easily.

The kids were all fascinated with the deer in both the front and backyard everyday, and the men had the golf game of their lives at Spanish Bay, just down the street. Another plus was being able to walk to the beach, we all loved that!

The only downside was the living room could use more seating. Maybe another sofa or a couple of recliners would make it perfect. The decor is dated and we thought it might bother us but it kind of added to the charm.

We actually stayed an extra night, none of us wanted to leave! If we head up that way again we will definitely stay there!

And a special thanks to Paul for his attentiveness and the golf balls!

Linda

Carelessly managed, overpriced, but some nice details like comfortable beds and peaceful environment

  • 3 of 5

This is a VRBO "featured" property, priced at almost $800 per night. Yet, our party of 11 felt it was carelessly managed, overpriced, and falling short of its promises.

PROS: The owner’s assistant was quick about responding to my emails, and they were very generous to allow us an exception to their minimum stay rule (due to unexpected changes on our end). The on-site house manager was cordial and responsive, though not always available (he works and has a life, so of course he's not always going to be there, but when he did arrive, he was quick to address our concerns). There were small shampoos/shower gels in the showers, the towels smelled clean, and beds were very comfortable. The garden tub with jets was a nice plus. The kitchen had salt, pepper, oil, tinfoil, some garbage bags, a few ziplocs and some Keurig pods for the machine, and the laundry room had detergent and dryer sheets. We were not met, but the keypad entrance is convenient.

CONS: The patio furniture, which only seats 5 people, had long-standing spider webs, caked-on dirt and old bird poo on all the pieces. We spent 15 minutes cleaning the frames, cushions and glass (one tabletop was missing, so we had only one small square on which to place snacks and drinks) before using them. The house advertises it sleeps 10-14 but that's a stretch unless you have all married couples or kids. We knew this ahead of time and brought airbeds so it worked out. One thermostat was broken, and there were absolutely no extra blankets in the house (and we couldn’t use the fireplace due to recent fire restrictions in the area). The manager did come the next evening, but was unable to fix the thermostat. Luckily it was warmer the remaining nights. The kitchen had crumbs in many drawers, a dirty pan in the oven, and was lacking tupperware (for leftovers), tools like whisks, chip clips, scissors, cocktail shaker, etc. The bathroom had outdated/rusted/rubbed off finish fixtures, there were NO extra towels for kitchen or bath anywhere (we had 11 towels and 11 people), so we did laundry often. The ONLY towel hook fell off the wall when we hung a towel on it. A doorknob to an upstairs closet fell off. The wifi was illogically located in an extreme corner of the house so except in that room, we had only one bar throughout most of the house. The advertised “backyard trail” was nowhere to be found, so we walked exactly .81 miles (not .31 miles) to the nearest beach, which of course was beautiful and worth it.
