Historic Downtown Savannah Cottage 331

Bedrooms 2
Space 65 m²
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

2x King Bedrooms + 1 Bathroom Small Cottage with Private Courtyard & Pool

This historic cottage in downtown Savannah was built for Clifford A. King in 1871. It is on the eastern border of Savannah's Historic District, between Jones Street and Liberty. You can walk to restaurants, antique stores, bars, and museums from this cottage.

This 135-year-old cottage is clean as a whistle and cute as a button. It is freshly renovated with modern amenities. You have your own private plunge pool in Cottage 331’s private rear courtyard. Having a dip while the fountain bubbles away is the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring the city.

The house is full of small treats, convenient features, and oversized mirrors. The owners, Chance and Julie, are avid travelers themselves, and want to spoil their guests with the little things that help make a travel experience special and romantic. They even insist that you help yourself to a complimentary bottle of wine--a small gesture to make you feel welcome.

There are 2 bedrooms and each has a king bed. A newly renovated bathroom is convenient to both bedrooms, located off the living room. The kitchen has granite countertops, modern LG and Samsung appliances, and is fully equipped for cooking. There is also a full size brand new front loading washer & dryer for your convenience!

Parking is free & easy on-street at this location. No permit is required.

This is next to "Cottage 333" which is VRBO #748967. Each cottage has its own separate private courtyard and pool.

A word on history: While the actual beach at Tybee Island is 17 miles away, this cottage is in a neighborhood in the Historic District that has what locals call "Beach cottages." These adorable homes are so-called for their proximity to the "Beach Institute." The Beach Institute was a school built in 1867 by the Freedmen’s Bureau of the American Missionary Association for the education of newly freed slaves. The school was named for New Yorker Alfred S. Beach, editor of the Scientific American, who donated funds for the site. The institute closed in 1919 when other schools opened. In its place is now an African-American Cultural Museum and tourist landmark of downtown Savannah. Beach cottages were built in the mid 1800's to house the working class of railroad laborers and craftsman that created the beautiful structures of historic Savannah. This small cottage is a remnant of that proud heritage.

Cozy cottage! Beds were so comfy and location was great for walking to everything.

Loved the location. We parked our car and walked everywhere. Beds were super comfy. Bathroom had been updated and was nice. One suggestion: Remove small table and chairs and get larger couch for end of day lounging. Thank you for a great stay!

Nice cottage, good for exploring the city

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean and in a good location to explore all the sites. The complimentary bottle of wine and little soaking pool in the backyard is a nice touch too. Communication with Mary and her assistant was great. All around a great stay!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay! The house was super clean and very well equipped. This is an old historic home which added so much charm. We got to imagine all the people that have lived there over the years. Thank you, Mary, for making the whole check in and out process so easy.

Nice home, good location

  • 4 of 5

This home was clean and had cute furnishings. The beds were comfortable. The dipping pool was great for relaxing and socializing. Steps leading to the pool steps would be a good addition. Some pest control spray would be useful. The location was good as it was accessible but also in a quiet area.

Conveniently located and clean

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was located close by the downtown area. Although the cottage was comfortable and clean we did have some issues with a musty smell that activated our allergies. The air conditioning was not set appropriately for the climate. It was hot outside and we were also sweating inside. Although we tried to reset it, it appears to be on a schedule which guests are asked not to touch and which we respected. Also we found a cockroach in one of the bedrooms which realistically given the weather being so hot and humid could happen anywhere. There were nice touches like the offer of the free bottle of wine. Also lots of towels and laundry detergent, coffee etc. However the cottage is very small and we were tight with 4 adults. The city of Savannah however made up for everything. It's a beautiful city and we had a great time

Also note to owner sheets appear old and felt pilled.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the compliments on the cleaning, we do think this is one of the cleanest vacation rentals in town and we appreciate the feedback on the sheets and we will get new sheets right away. A call or text about something like that is always welcome and helpful. Guests have control over the thermostat and our only request is that guests not set the target below 70 in the hottest days of summer, since that could freeze the system and cause it to stop working. We wish this guest had asked about this "schedule" because we could have helped her. Several phone numbers are inside the cottage to call for questions/help so future guests please ask us if you need help. We do have pest control at this cottage and since palmetto bugs are plentiful in the low country once in a while a guest will come across one. This is indeed a small cottage and priced lower than larger 2 bedroom homes.

About Mary Anderson

I'm Mary Anderson and I am the reservation manager for this cottage. I have lived in Savannah since 2002. I began operating my first VRBO in 2010 which was a garden apartment below my home a block away from this cottage. As a mother who already worked at home, hosting VRBO guests was perfect fit. I had a whirlwind first year of back to back lovely guests. Before I knew it multiple friends & neighbors asked me to operate their downtown vacation rentals too! I started my own website in 2012 and as of 2015 I now manage over 20 vacation rentals in the Historic District of Savannah! I am also a licensed Realtor.

Why Mary Anderson chose Beach Institute

The City of Savannah has a way of making people fall in love with it, from the walking lifestyle to the stunning historic architecture to the many great restaurants and rare public green spaces scattered throughout the city. Like many people who have traveled here, the owners of this cottage knew they wanted a 2nd home vacation rental in Savannah. When this double cottage became available they knew it was "the one"! They were immediately drawn to its convenient location, compact size and great historic original preserved features such as heart of pine flooring and mantles.

What makes this cottage unique

The best part of finding this cottage and making it into the perfect vacation rental was the private courtyard which was perfectly suited for the owners' plan of installing a small plunge pool. A private pool for a small vacation rental has always been highly sought in downtown Savannah. The owners have dedicated the courtyards to their grandparents.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This was a nice cozy little place in a quiet neighborhood. Mary was easy to talk to and work with. We enjoyed our stay here.

The place was clean and inviting. We really enjoyed our stay here. We loved the fact that there was a washer and dryer on site.
