About the property

Quarky Houseboat In The Heart Of Seattle

The Space...

Turnip has a cool feel and is great for someone who wants a genuine, interesting houseboat experience yet still all the comforts of home. She has a junk style design, which is a common in Asia, a great roof for sitting on, and hobbity archways inside that really create the space.

- 1 queen size bed

- 1 sleeper sofa (1 person)

- 1 six foot sleeping nook (best for children)

- 1 full size blow up mattress and sheets available

- Sleeps 4 on the above furniture pieces

- 4 total overnight guests allowed

- Full kitchen (refrigerator, stove, coffee press, kitchen essentials)

- Heated (2 portable heaters + 1 wall heater)

- Full bathroom (japanese style shower, toilet, sink)

- Wireless internet

- Kid friendly

- Indoor and outdoor breakfast/eating nook

- Deck and roof lounge area

- Parking out front the marina office building at a cost of $1 per hour. Weekdays, it is free before 9 am and after 4 pm. Weekends are free as well. Note: due to guest parking passes being taken by guests repeatedly, they are no longer available.

- (5) kayaks (first come, first serve)

Guest Access...

You will have access to the place all yourself. I will have shower items for you, towels, sheets, etc.

Access to the boat is via a self-checkin process. All access and reservation instructions will be included in the confirmation page after booking. In addition, we will email the houseboat manual as a PDF 5-7 days prior to your reservation.

Interaction with Guests...

Just a phone call away for whatever you need.

The Neighborhood...

The area sits conveniently close to downtown Seattle and tucked between Fremont and Ballard. For those checking out the city, this is a great location. For those on business, also super convenient and comfortable. The closest grocery store is about a mile away in Fremont (PCC) so keep that in mind.

Other Things to Note...

- It's important to know that this is a boat and not a house, and that's its charm. While it does have everything you will need, its not like living in a house - doors are smaller, toilets are funny, stairs are steep, and sometimes the boat rocks.

- Seasickness and dizzyness is unlikely unless you are very sensitive.

- The ceiling height is not standard, max 7', plus there are a few smaller accesses to different parts of the house. If you are very tall, you may find this irritating. The entrance to the boat requires bending and stepping down. If you have physical difficulties, this may not be the best match.

- I have 4 kayaks and 1 kayak/paddle board conversion available first come, first serve.

- There is a little cafe at the marina which does has WIFI, coffee, beer, wine. It is not open weekends.

- 5-7 days before your reservation the Property Manager will reach out via email to provide the houseboat manual and entering instructions.

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Staying aboard the Turnip Houseboat made our trip to Seattle complete. The Turnip is a quaint little boat with lots of charm and a very comfortable bed. It is conveniently located on the bus route (#40) which will take you Downtown or to Ballard and Fremont. It's centrally located in Westlake so that makes it within walking distance to many restaurant and neighborhoods. Seattle is a walkable city so we enjoyed our walks about town from this area, but a Lyft or an Uber will also take you want to go in town for little money. I would stay aboard the Turnip again. Be conservative with water and follow the rules about using the Marina bathroom when possible. This is normal houseboat living and the water lasted us just about right for our two day stay. We very much enjoyed our time on the Turnip and highly recommend it.

Great experience, a few easy fixes would have made it a 5 star experience

  • 3 of 5

I will start with the good, most of which is evident in the pictures:

First off, its a house boat, a very Unique one, that alone is worth 2 stars. It also is in a pretty good location that is walk-able and did i mention its a house boat! aka on a lake! In addition to that you can watch the sea planes take off all day (never gets old) and use the kayaks to explore the lake. A very unique and fun experience.

We found the bed to be moderately comfortable and the houseboat itself to be reasonably spacious (larger than your typical cruise stateroom)

Also the marina was pretty quiet and felt very safe.

Now for the bad:

We did not receive the check-in information until 4 hours prior to checking in (This took 3 VRBO messages and a phone call over a weeks period of time)

Wouldn't have been a big deal if I wasn't on the other side of the country wondering where I was going to sleep for the second half of my vacation.

Also the check-in procedure/ boat instructions was 8 pages, so accessing the boat was a bit more confusing than it would have been if I had time to review the documentation prior.

Additionally for this type of rental it would be very beneficial to have someone great you upon your arrival and give you some in-person directions, this would have made the world of a difference in this situation.

My biggest complaint/suprise about the turnip was the lack of curtains. I read the previous reviews of lack of privacy but I took this as outdoor privacy. Well there is no privacy indoors either. Not even if you want to shower or change. Only half of the windows have curtains which are a pathetic example of curtains at that. All the ambient city lights and the lack of curtains made sleeping difficult. This is an easy fix that would have made the stay much more pleasant.

The other large complaint is the toilet, with that said I went in expecting the toilet to be an issue, however it was far worse than expected. Forget #2 this toilet couldn't even handle #1. Thankfully we found the marina bathroom after searching all over for it. To be honest I do not understand why this cannot be fixed. Even if it means moving the toilet to the space across from the shower (this would allow for the toilet to drop directly into the holding tank avoiding issues with the pump)

Lastly, it appears the large window with the locking issue near the bed was corrected by making the window in-operable. This made it difficult to cool the boat down on a hot day.

ups and downs

  • 3 of 5

It is a cute little boat, with a big window that opens out adjacent to the bed. Wonderful water movement rocking you to sleep. A unique experience. On the down side, there were toilet issues that required us to call for assistance (2 times in 3 days). The wonderful big window did not have a functional lock (and the instructions on the boat ask that you leave boat locked with the windows closed). There were several lights not working, some did not have bulbs, so that during dark hours there was no light in the toilet area, and the one in the kitchen was on the opposite side of the room, so what ever you worked on had your shadow cast on your work (frustrating).

I would have liked a location with some shops or activity near by. The deli at the business area is closed on weekends. We made use of uber every time we went out.

Really cute house boat!

  • 3 of 5

I stayed on the Turnip house boat for 3 nights in July. The location was great, but the bikes that were promised before I booked my stay were unfortunately unavailable. I was disappointed because we ended up having to take a bunch more taxis. I was really hoping we would have bikes to get around with! Just remember you are staying on a house boat. This is definitely not a hotel. There are other house boats very close to this one, so if you are looking for complete privacy, this might not be the choice. Also, the big window in the back did not lock. The marina was locked, but it still did not make us feel very secure about leaving our belongings in an unlocked boat where other people come and go consistently. I did let Meagan know about this, so hopefully it will be fixed for the next person who comes to stay.

That being said, everything else was great! The bed was super comfortable, the shower was piping hot and we only had to refill the water tank on our last day. Meagan was responsive and helpful leading up to and during our stay. We even got a free bottle of wine upon arrival! I would definitely recommend staying here if you are looking for something quirky with beautiful views of Lake Union.

Peaceful romatic quaint unusual houseboat with Seattle views

  • 5 of 5

We loved this asian junk style renovated boat, done with loving and creative touches. The wood interior is unique and artistic, the colors are beautiful, the place is cozy and romantic, and the view from the roof of the lake and city are awesome. Being a marina around other boat people has its own wonderful 'set apart' vibe. The bed was very comfortable, good for two people, and I loved the interesting intellectual selection of books. The deep bath/shower is a fun experience. I would recommend curtains or changeable blinds over the windows so one can shower and have privacy and then open them for views and light, otherwise the place was perfect. Mike was a helpful host. The keys were self serve in a little lock box- bring a flashlight if arriving at night to see which one among other lock boxes is marked 'Turnip' and to be able to read the code numbers. When we let ourselves in we were greeted with warm lights, a heater going, fruit, and a complimentary bottle of wine set out with glasses. I will definitely return and recommend this unusual and cool way to stay in Seattle to others.
