Welcome to Downton Abbey

  • 5 of 5

My daughter's family arrived first, and my son-in-law greeeted us, "Welcome to Downton Abbey!"

The property was beautiful, clean and well-kept, all basic necessities supplied and very cool in a heatwave. We are foodies, and found the kitchen exceptionally well fitted out and the dining room handsome. We loved the porch for playing with the play tunnel and tent and reading. Also, it was very quiet from room to room, even with lively youngsters in tow.

The neighborhood is very convenient to downtown, where the square is fun to explore and the diner just right for breakfast. A Hardee's and an Aldi are also walking distance with HyVee and Fareway a quick drive away. We spent much of our time at Lake Rathbun, and even in high summer on a hot weekend, the beaches were not crowded.

We really enjoyed our relaxing time and learning about Centerville and its coal-mining history.

Perfect. Spacious. Memories.

  • 5 of 5

What a GEM! This is honestly the best VRBO we have ever stayed in. I honestly can't believe they don't charge more per night.

Tons of room, two dining rooms and a gorgeous sunroom. The beds are super comfy.

Everything was clean and the owners were easy to communicate with.

Oh and another bonus is there is plenty of off street parking. We even went swimming in the pool at the Y, right behind the house.

Make sure to go to Rathbun Lake and drive across the dam. Gorgeous at sunset.

A beautiful historical mansion with 4 bedrooms, 5 baths , wonderful sunporch, huge dining room.

  • 4 of 5

Well furnished but badly needs a good cleaning, were never able to get wifi, even after contacting owner a couple of times. My husband has health issues and we were given first choice of bedrooms - he needed to have bathroom facilities close at hand. Choice was made and rest of our group all settled or were settling into rooms when we discovered that the toilet in our bathroom had a sign on it saying "this is a #1 toilet only". When we realized exactly what that meant we decided that for "other purposes" we would have to go down a long hallway to the only bathroom not "insuite" which put a bit of a hardship on him. Might be a good thing to mention this somewhere that visitors would notice before settling in. It is a beautiful house and we enjoyed our reunion. Thank you for sharing this gem.

Owner's Response: Sounds like you really enjoyed your time and the sunroom was the highlight! It is beautiful with lots of seating and tons of room. Also sounds like you tried contacting us several times about the internet. We only received one phone call and we got in touch with you right away. The house was professionally cleaned before your arrival, and I am still waiting to hear back from you as to what you found that was not clean.

Beautiful home! Great for big groups! Would stay again.

  • 5 of 5

I rented this house for an annual birthday trip for 12 guests. The house was plenty big enough and gave us plenty of room to spread out. Almost all bedrooms have their own bathrooms, which is great for privacy. The house was clean, well kept, and beautiful. Large dining room for group meals. The host was communicative and friendly. The surround town is cute as well. I recommend Northside cafe!

Great weekend!!!

  • 5 of 5

I live and work in North Dakota and googled a vacation home to rent early January 2018. My daughter & family from Texas, my son & fiancee from Wisconsin and my son/family from Iowa all met at Porter Hall (Centerville, IA) to spend time together and to celebrate our Christmas. We all had a great time and give this place an A+++. I brought a large pre-lit artificial Christmas tree to add to this beautiful home ambience. We had pizza delivered one evening and made morning brunch twice using the nice kitchen facilities. The town square had many neat gift shops & I took my family out to Lucille's Steak & Spirit for a great evening meal. Joshua, the owner, was very professional and made our weekend trip "awesome". I highly recommend Porter Hall for your next family get together if you are in this area and need of....

Fun to explore!

  • 4 of 5

This was the perfect house for our family reunion. It is a lovely place with all the spacious areas to gather downstairs. The kitchen was adequately stocked with what we needed to cook with and it was nice having an Aldi within walking distance to shop at. I also loved that it was within walking distance of the town square. We spent lots of time exploring the shops there and reliving the days of our childhood. The bedrooms and beds were comfortable though there was a plumbing problem with one of the toilets upstairs. All the bedrooms are upstairs so we would have had to be creative if all of our family members had attended. We have some in the family who cannot do stairs. We enjoyed a DVD one night as a family also as part of our entertainment. Thank you Joshua for being available to answer our questions. We will consider this location again in the future for our reunions.
