Property type house

About the property

3500 Sq Ft house on 2.75 acres - 4 Bdrm 3 Ba Sleeps 8, on the McKenzie River

Rich and magnificent with its lodge-quality craftsmanship, Whispering Pines Oregon has over 300 feet of river frontage, and 600+ feet of creek frontage. It sits on 2.75 acres of land bursting with rhodies, trees and ferns. Located just below Marten Rapids, it offers easy access to fishing, floating or just jumping in on a hot day. Built on a rock foundation, the river front is solid rock - which gives you one large, natural patio to play on.

Summers on the McKenzie are a special treat for all ages. Are you from CA and miss your seasons? Consider nestling in here and watching leaves change in the fall, or come in winter and read by the roaring fire after walking in the cold cold temperatures. Summer recreation can begin as soon as Spring begins to burst through the ground once again. You can find more photos at our site, WhisperingPinesOregon, or our Facebook page, Whispering Pines Oregon on the McKenzie River.

As you enter Whispering Pines, you will discover that it sits on a gated, private parcel, bordered on the West by the Marten Creek stream, and to the North, the McKenzie River. The neighborhood is generally quiet. Your days and nights will be on a property that is just shy of 3 acres, bursting with old Douglas Firs, leafy ferns, 20-year old rhododendrons and much more. It is tranquil and quiet – a perfect get-away place. The common area in your vacation home features two fireplaces (with custom, beautiful Yew mantles), lots of window seating, and plenty of outdoors to roam, explore, and reflect. This site is unusual because of its close proximity to the water. You won't find many sites like this one.

The house is and will remain rustic, however, in 2016 we upgraded a few things for a better experience - new quartz kitchen counters, new family room recessed lighting, new 8-man hot tub, new rock fireplaces, new custom yew mantels, new paint, and new skylights. The main level is 2400 sq feet, and the upper wing is 1100 sq ft. The main level has the Master (King) bedroom, and a second bedroom with a 2nd King bed, and has the two common areas with dining area. The upstairs wing has two bedrooms (two Queens), and a sofa in the sitting area. The upstairs bathroom is shared between the two upstairs rooms, and has a private showering room separate from a general use area. A balcony offers views of the property. The upstairs wing is connected to the main floor via an enclosed breezeway – which gives the upstairs wing complete privacy. All beds have been upgraded to feature custom pine frames crafted by a local artist.

There is plenty of outdoor seating along the banks of the river, on the back decks, and on property. (The decks, by the way, are of Ipe wood, which speaks to the quality of materials used on this property). Paths through forest lead you to Marten Creek. Large rocks that rise above the river allow you to fish in the river, or when water is warm, to jump in and float. Outside fires are allowed as code permits. See more on the gallery page to get a better idea of the treat you are in for when you are on property. We have a portable grill for you, that operates on propane (one tank provided), and makes outdoor grilling super easy. There is a Traeger onsite; if you know how to use it we can make it available to you.

Can't miss your workout? We understand – and have a weight room with free weights, kettle bells, bench press, leg press, elliptical, stretch straps and stability ball. While many of you will come to escape city-life, we do offer the modern conveniences of Wifi and cable TV. Amenities in each bathroom include hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, shampoo, lotion, Q-tips cotton balls, and (of course) towels. HVAC throughout, 2-car garage, and washer and dryer, ironing board and iron (although most never have a use for this in your laid back, easy lifestyle here).

The area is also rich with water falls, rivers, streams, hiking trails, fly-fishing, rafting, kayaking, biking, cycling and even rock climbing and tree climbing. Hunting season begins in fall, guests are responsible for their own compliance with local and state codes.

Ike's Pizza, Vida Café, and other small restaurants and cafés are nearby, as well as a market. Be sure to check your hospitality news that will arrive in your in-box after your reservation as been confirmed. This will have more information for local activities.

This home is serene, and is filled with functional art – a maple tree dining table, a teak bench from Bali, a teak root coffee table, and cute tree and bear tables. The rug in main room is silk and wool, hand knotted from Tibet. We know you will love the very relaxed setting here at Whispering Pines, however, be aware there are inherent risks being close to water (see below). Because of this risk, and because of the custom functional art, children under 12 need approval to stay – we want the opportunity to speak with you and make sure this property is a good fit for you.

We know that your dogs are part of your family, and they are welcome as long as they are house-broken and trained, paws cleaned before entering common area, and kept off furniture. There is a $35 per dog, 2 max. The enclosed breezeway allows you to isolate them until you are ready to bring them into common area which makes it super easy on you.

We are pride-of-ownership owners, and have been upgrading many of the features. As such, we invite similar, like-minded people to come stay at Whispering Pines on the McKenzie River (also known as Whispering Pines Oregon). You must be willing to love this home as we do while you are there - it is not a place to treat as any other rental- this is a beloved second home for us. While accidents happen, and we understand the normal wear-and-tear, we do ask that you treat the house kindly and respectfully. Once you have booked with us, you will have access to online tutorials on how to use the hot tub, popcorn machine, entertainment system, and other household mechanics to ensure you have a rich and fulfilling time.

Since we are right on the water, in an effort of complete transparency, we are making you aware of the following:

Here is a little background for you on our river. The McKenzie River is a 90-mile tributary of the Willamette River - it drains part of the Cascade Range East of Eugene and flows westward into the southernmost end of the Willamette Valley. It originates as the outflow of Clear Lake, is named for Donald MacKenzie, a Scottish Canadian fur trader. The fish include Chinook Salmon, Mountain Whitefish, and Bull and Rainbow Trout. Dippers, mergansers, bald eagles, ospreys and various ducks feed on the fish. The Northern Spotted Owl lives in the dense forest on the west side of upper McKenzie Basin in Linn County.

Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities on trails in the McKenzie watershed. The river is popular for boating, especially fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting.

Goodpasture Rd is a quiet street with homes on large parcels. Whispering Pines is protected from Hwy 126 noise by its unique location in relation to the highway. Not many homes along the river have our curb-appeal, our privacy, and our protection from highway noise. It is a jewel, and it is well-loved and well cared for. Treat yourself to its beauty.

About Jane Terry

Our family has rented VRBOs on and off, and finally decided to purchase a vacation home for ourselves to be closer to our children and grandchildren. We closed on this property in September 2015, and have been busy making it a home-way-from-home for ourselves, and opened it up to VRBO guests early 2016. We love this property - it's rich in natural beauty, and we are excited to offer it to other travelers. This is our second home, and we share it with you presuming you will take good care of our things while enjoying this spectacular home.

My husband is a Buckeye, while I was born and raised in southern California. My parents were from the Portland area, where we ultimately raised our children (in Tigard, OR). Our grown children now have family here, and Whispering Pines will be our place to reconnect. We hope it will become a second home to a small group of regulars, and it becomes the place they too reconnect with friends and family over lovely dinners, long walks and lingering talks.

We enjoy entertaining, and we enjoy our family. We want the experience here to be the same for you as it is for us - which is why we have extensive kitchen tools and gadgets, outdoor seating, and nooks and crannies to sit in. Use the house as base camp while you explore the Eugene Cascades, or use the house to take refuge from the world - either way it is here for you. Kids love to crawl into the window seat benches. Young adults generally like to curl up in the over-sized round swivel chairs, and the game players camp around the large coffee table in lower common area.

While we love Whispering Pines for its natural beauty and respite for the soul, it is also close enough to snow for our adult kids and our grandchildren to go for a day of fun at Woodoo, Sisters, or Bend, and close enough to Eugene for Duck games. My husband and I no longer ski, but we wanted kids to have access to that recreation. For us, the forest and river satisfies our souls, and inspires our hearts

Jane Terry purchased this house in 2015

Why Jane Terry chose Vida

We weren't looking to buy a house when we found this property, but its majestic beauty and useable riverfront just took our breaths away. The drive onto the property was reminiscent of Brigadoon, the mythical village hidden in the hills of Scotland. Once inside the house, we saw the marvelous wood used in the interior design of this custom home, the spacious layout of the house, and then we went outside to the deck. There, we fell in love with the river - the long stretch of riverfront, and the forested paths leading us to Marten Creek.

We have rented homes on the river before, but the difference between those homes and this one is that in those homes the river was loud and wild, rushing by. Here, it runs steady, but mild and calm in the warmer months. There are large rocks out back that have a drop-off to the river. From these rocks you can fish, jump in the river and float, or just sit and enjoy the views. Downstream, where the Marten Creek empties into the McKenzie, is a shallow area for wading into the water, or you can take some chairs down there and sit in the water, or do some fly-fishing from there. Just under 3 acres, the combination of 2+ acres of forest, a large house, and big beautiful rocks out back, all on a secluded level lot, made it irresistible to us. We think you will find it irresistible, too.

Living in a city as we do now, we do not like to hear traffic noise when vacationing. Hwy 126, which runs along the river, serves as a main thoroughfare for logging trucks and if you look where we are on the map, you will see this property is far from the hwy. Two things keeps the area quiet - there are acres of hazelnut trees between the hwy and river, which sit at a higher elevation. We are happily buffered from Hwy 126 both by distance and elevation! Here, we have a river, old-growth trees, a solid bank to fish from, a creek to wade in and a stillness in the air. The perfect place to reflect, relax, or reconnect with friends and family.

What makes this house unique

The most unique benefit you are sure to enjoy is the close proximity to the river and the creek. Over time, the changes to land use laws no longer permit homes to be this close to the river.

The property is not manicured or landscaped - it is groomed for fire prevention and entertaining, but otherwise the land is naturally filled with trees, ferns and other growths. Rhodies were brought in 20 years ago, and there are a few Japanese maples, but otherwise the land is natural. There are three favorite sitting areas along the river, where you just melt into your seats and watch time go by - or in the summer, watch rafters go by. Breathe in deeply - the pine scented air will fill your lungs, exhale and feel the release. Then sit back and enjoy the company of your friends, your family, or your own self.

The hikes in the area are beautiful. There are dozens of trails and most recreational hikers will do fine. There is a lovely walk off property along the river heading North on a paved road, with little traffic, that goes for miles, but because Whispering Pines is remote, most day hikes will be along a scenic drive to get to your destination. Larger day trips would include Crater Lake - 2.5 hours away (140) , but an early depart time, and allowing 3 hours for being there, and you could do it in a day. Stop at Ike's Pizza to bring dinner home; Mt Bachelor, also 2.5 hours away (120 mi); Hoodoo an hour away (60 min), and Bend is 105 minutes (99 mi) away; Mt Hood 3-1/4 hours (188 mi); Coast is 90 minutes (80 mi). Portland is 134 mi, 2.25 hours. The area is blessed with several beautiful trails & waterfalls.

We like to stay local when at Whispering Pines, and get in a local hike or two (see our FaceBook page for photos of local hikes), be at the house on that river with all those trees around us. Whether you are coming for an extended stay, or are passing through to another destination, Whispering Pines is a special treat you are sure to enjoy.

The eastern side of house is close to neighbors, however, that is the Master side of house, and so it is not bothersome in that you don't use that area often. Western side of property shares a creek with Wayfarer (we both own to the middle of the creek), and can be slippery (and cold!). Use caution around creek and water, and any wet or damp areas.

Beautiful Home and Grounds

  • 5 of 5

The Whispering Pines house and grounds are beautiful. We were there for a week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The house is well appointed and has beautiful views of the McKenzie River. You can walk out to the back deck, go down a few stairs and be next to the river. The grounds are well maintained with footpaths leading all over the property. Just lovely. There were a couple of hickups the first day but Byron made sure they were resolved quickly. Thanks Byron. And thanks to whoever made the yummy cookies for us.

A superb setting and home at the River's edge

  • 5 of 5

Jane's gorgeous Whispering Pines home on the McKenzie River was absolutely perfect for our family gathering. The website descriptions and previous reviews very accurately describe the stunning setting at the confluence of Martin Creek and the McKenzie. We could not have found a more beautiful and spacious home or setting and will be ever-grateful. The home affords spaciousness, privacy, nature, and everything we could have asked for.
