About Lee and Donna Garrett

This historic southern home is owned by Lee and Donna Garrett. Lee grew up in the mill town of Calhoun Falls. As a child, he, like many others admired this colonial style home that housed the top managers of the mill throughout its history. Lee became Mayor of the town in 2010 and served a 4-year term. While he was Mayor, he helped develop a strategic plan to evolve the town community from its mill town heritage to its future as a lakefront community. He and his wife, Donna, and their daughter, Emily, served local churches and organizations in order to attain a higher quality of life for its residents and its visitors. Lee has returned to his business career in order to complete his daughter's educational opportunities. Lee and Donna have decided to share their beautiful home with visitors to the Lake Russell area.

Lee and Donna Garrett purchased this house in 2009

Why Lee and Donna Garrett chose Calhoun Falls

We purchased this house because of its depth of historical significance and its current offer of enhanced quality of living. It has been the home of leadership in the mill and community throughout its history. It began as, and still is the centerpiece of architectural design in the community. Though it is centrally located, it offers an atmosphere of isolation and quietness.

What makes this house unique

Russell House has spacious rooms featuring hardwood floors, crown mouldings, and king-sized high posts and sleigh beds. It has a beautiful large eat-in kitchen and formal dining room that are available for private use. The wrap-around front porch offers leisure sitting and quiet time. The spaciousness is perfect for large groups that can enjoy time together, as well as being sufficient for personal time. The fenced-in yard serves to isolate the property and to protect personal property. The living room, kitchen, and upstairs foyer area offer WiFi and cable services.

Great Location and Lots of space

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed in this beautiful home from 4-8 Aug 2016. It was absolutely perfect for housing the six of us. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. We had everything we needed for our stay. We fell in love with the beautiful porch and spent a great deal of time there enjoying the evening weather. The AC was amazing for a house that size. The weather was hot during the day but the house maintained cool temps. My two year old grandson visited and loved the fenced in yard. He could run until his heart was content. We felt extremely safe and the closeness to Lake Russell was an added bonus. I will definitely recommend this house to anyone visiting the Abbeville, Calhoun Falls, or Elberton area.

We loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

Great house, well appointed, extremely comfortable, and very nice and attentive owners. My family loved this house. We spent our nights on the front porch relaxing in the rocking chairs and watching the cars go by. Staying in the house was like going back in time. It's been updated in a way that's added all of the comforts expected today but maintained all of the charm of years gone by. The beds are very comfortable and the air conditioning works very well.

Beautiful property in charming town

  • 5 of 5

I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks in this home. I didn't want to leave. The beds are comfortable, the yard is gorgeous (I spent a lot of time outside playing with my nephews that live in Calhoun Falls and they had a blast!), and it was just such a relaxing time for me and my family. The only complaints I have are 1) The house isn't nearly as stocked as any house I've stayed in before. 2 tablets for the dishwasher and 2 trash bags doesn't seem reasonable to me, although I understand that most people only stay 1 week. Most houses have an abundance of towels, toilet paper, soap, etc, and this one was pretty poorly stocked. The 2nd complaint would be the heater. It worked great until 1 morning and the ever-attentive owners of the house were there that day to speak to me about it, so I loved how quick they were about it. Unfortunately, someone came out to 'fix' it and said he'd be back the next day or day after and we never saw him again. We had a 6 week old baby with us who is rather cold-natured and could have used that heater in the mornings, but thankfully the afternoons warmed up nicely.

Overall, I'd give this 5 out of 5 stars because I know this property hasn't been rented out much in the past and the owners are still learning what their customers want. Even with the lack of supplies, I'd definitely stay there again.

Comfortable and Spacious, but...

  • 2 of 5

As most of our family is from SC, we thought it would be nice to rent a house there and entertain them for Thanksgiving Dinner.

The positives:

This house is a grand old manner on a spacious fenced in lot. It has been updated with a relatively modern kitchen and bathrooms, wi-fi and cable. The porch is just wonderful, even on blustery fall days. The beds are all big and comfortable one being a gorgeous poster bed and there is an impressive array of paintings and antiques. The dining room is ample and beautifully appointed.

The Negatives:

One thing we always look for is a house with a jacuzzi because we have an autistic child that adores the jets. This house has one but running the water revealed a gross amount of dirt and dust in the system. After we filled and cleaned it thrice, it appeared clean, but at that point we were still too concerned put our child in it.

The dishwasher broke the day before Thanksgiving. We called and they were unable to repair/replace and offered to send someone to clean Thanksgiving dishes, but we couldn't see making other leave family to work in Thanksgiving, but we chalked this up to "stuff happens."

The beautiful paintings and antiques were really dusty. Maybe it is our military background that made this part of the stay a little less enjoyable for us, but we definitely took notice.

The strict no-pets rule made it difficult for some of our family to visit because they have an aging dog that must be walked every several hours. With a great fenced in yard, it would have been more accommodating to allow pets outside if you clean up after them.

The biggest issue we have however is that the dining room chairs are old and in poor repair. One of them broke a leg when sat upon, probably because of a prior poor repair. When we informed the owners, instead of being grateful no one was injured by their chair, they took half the security deposit instead when we actually left the house in a cleaner state than when we got there.

So while I couldn't recommend the house to anyone, I will say that the negatives won't ruin your stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Your family was our 2nd guests. We are committed to helping travelers find a private and comfortable place providing a unique living experience. Your review will help our commitment to continuous improvement. First, our apologies for the dust on the paintings. We are proud of the character and capability of our cleaning staff. They missed this one. We have given feedback that was graciously accepted. As to your reference to military background, we would like to give honor and say thank you to whomever served, and to the family that supported them. Our second son is currently in his 12th year serving our country. We know the sacrifice of the individual and family members involved in this honorable endeavor. We also learned that his loyalty was gained when taught that discipline and order would save not only his life, but those of his comrades and citizens of our country. We thank you for giving the opportunity to accomodate your precious daughter. Per your request, we spent hours making changes to our home, hoping to give your family and daughter comfort in your stay. Our inoperable jacuzzi is made public in the hospitality section of our listing. We now recognize it needs to be more prominently declared. Our regret is in any disappointment your daughter may have experienced. Another regret is that we did not make the contact with you to find out what special things we could provide for her enjoyment. We need to trust in and act on our desires rather than keeping them inside. We are supporters of animals. Our "no pets" policy is figured to be accomodating to most clients. We were never asked about the extended family's dog. We feel that it was a missed opportunity to make exception for another rare example of loyalty as only elderly dogs can claim. The heavy duty dining room chairs are less than ten years old. There have never been prior repairs to our knowledge. How the front leg was broken completely off mystifies us all. A reliable repair required parts not locally available and craftsman rated labor. Replacement of the entire set may be needed to keep the high standard we hope to provide our future guests. The dishwasher was never a problem and we agree that in the case of the chair, and the dishwasher (in need of full replacement), comes under "stuff happens". We felt return of half the deposit was another expression of our gratitude to your family for giving us a chance to pursue this business.
