About Paul de Freitas

Paul and Fay Anne de Freitas are both world travellers who settled in the Cayman Islands in 1983. Brought up in Guyana, England and Ireland, and having lived in the USA, Antigua and Grenada, we bring a knowledge of what is needed to instinctively feel comfortable and at home in a new environment. Fay Anne manages the property from our Savannah home some 20 minutes away. Paul is involved in a company which produces banking software and travels fairly regularly to his office in Sweden.

Paul de Freitas purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Paul de Freitas chose East End

Paul and Fay Anne recognised that unique beach property is hard to find. And the Half Moon Bay is very unique - a coral garden. This property was supposed to become the clubhouse of the exclusive Half Moon Bay project which, thanks to Hurricane Ivan, came to an untimely end. With grounds of an acre and deep deposits of white sand over a stable ironshore base, the site offered many possibilities for development. We decided to place a twin apartment structure on the east side of the property since this kind of layout maximises privacy for individual renters. We designed Crescent Beach from the ground up. And since June of 2015 we have been testing it as friends and relatives have visited to give us their valuable opinion of what was great and other things they would like to see. And so Crescent Beach is an extension of our personality and even includes artwork from Fay Anne.

What makes this apartment unique

Crescent Beach is unique because its beach fronts a small bay, Half Moon Bay, full of living coral gardens among which you can walk - only on the sandy bits please. It is even more unique because the properties to the east and west have iron-shore frontage - a tough, craggy, limestone rock - and for this reason, the usual rule of the beach being open to walkers up to the high water mark really does not apply. To access the beach, third parties would have to cross private property.

Our beach is used as a nesting site for the Green Turtle and we make sure that we are around to help the nestlings into the water when they dig their way to the surface after their gestation period in the sand. The sight of numerous baby turtles scuttling determinedly towards the surf line is a sight that one does not forget. No guarantees, but the last nestlings took to the water in August - so if that's your month, you may get lucky and see one of Mother Nature's most wonderful sights.

So for visitors keen on quiet relaxation in a unique environment, but with fast and convenient access to restaurants, diving, and about 30 minutes away, the big city - George Town and Camana Bay, Crescent Beach affords the best of both worlds.

A Wii game console is available in SAND and an XBox360 is available in SKY. We provide some games, but please also bring your own. A court for beach volleyball or paddle tennis or for playing the French game of boules is available. We do provide limited snorkel gear. The snorkeling at Crescent Beach is among the best in Grand Cayman - so please bring your own snorkel, mask and flipper as well as a flotation vest if you use it. But be aware that venturing outside of the reef is not a good idea when the wind is from the north east, east or south. You will encounter very big swells and waves breaking on the reef. We will always try to accommodate your reasonable requests so please do not be shy - just ask. If we can meet your needs we will do so.

Highly recommend!!! Beautiful and kind owners!!!

  • 5 of 5

Can't say enough about this awesome place and owners! Honestly, you could stay here alone and never leave and enjoy the ocean and snorkeling steps from the home. The owners are lovely people and so helpful. They made our stay extra special. Glad we chose to stay here and rent a car as it was a much quieter area and very private.

Tukka and casa43 were two of our favorite restaurants we ventured out to. The blow holes are awesome and are just a mile away. It is a great spot just to visit and take some great pictures. It is not a swimming spot. Smith Cove is awesome for swim/snorkel and 7 mile Beach if you don't want to just stay at the house.

I highly recommend this home it has everything you need. They supply beach towels, umbrellas, snorkeling equipment, water shoes and even bags for the grocery store so you don't have to buy your own bags. There are plenty of bath towels/awesome bath bars by Bubbles ( be sure to visit the store just down the road) and kitchen dishes if you want to cook. Everything was well thought out by Paul and Faye Ann.

We hope we can return one day to their beautiful home 😊 Thank you so much!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review - we really appreciate your visit and your words. Half Moon Bay is, as we have so often said, a very special part of Grand Cayman, offering something for everyone who stays there. And so we really tried to make sure that Crescent Beach and its facilities would feel like a home for everyone. Thank you for your advice - we shall have to visit Casa 43 - we are always happy to have guest and personal experiences of new restaurants and other places to visit. And we cannot overemphasize how picturesque the Blow Holes are - and yet they are just a nice walk up the road. Finally, and quoting a previous reviewer whose thoughts really touched us: God bless your you and your family in all that you do. "And now these three remain, Faith, Hope and Love. But the greatest of these is Love." 1 Cor 13:13

Throw the rental car keys in the pool

  • 5 of 5

Seriously- no need to leave. The best snorkeling- a swimming pool- East End weather (it really does rain less than other parts of the island). If you want to explore, you are nicely located with quick access to the East End, nice resorts and restaurants, close to Rum Pointe (fun for a day or two) and not too far from Seven Mile Beach. The house and hosts are perfect- the most organized and professional owners I've ever rented from- we were lacking nothing and already are dreaming about our next visit.

Select This House and Get On With Your Trip

  • 5 of 5

Don't let making a decision about where to stay take too long. Select Crescent Beach and be done with that part of your planning. Paul and Fay Anne have a wonder home located in the perfect spot. They are wonderful hosts and have put a lot of thought into their home and the amenities. We stayed in Sky and had a beautiful upper-level view of the Caribbean each day.

The home is located about 30 minutes away from Georgetown. For us, that was the nice part. We prefer a quieter, more secluded location and like to dine at restaurants that are owned by locals. There are numerous places to eat, but the home is also a great spot to prepare your own meals. The grocery store is about 10 to 15 minutes away.

Several snorkeling locations are close, with a great spot just outside the back door. The botanical garden and Mastic trail are 5 minutes away. The Crystal Caves are about 10 minutes away and worth a visit.

Visit their website to view the floorplan (very nice touch) to see how your family will fit in. The open plan great room, dining room, kitchen combo kept the family close but with plenty of room to enjoy.

We rented a car from Marshalls (very good experience and much less expensive than the national US chains - don't hesitate on that decision either). Driving is on the left and there are lots of roundabouts. Not a difficult transition of thinking. Just remember to look right before you pull out. The locals are very patient with US drivers.

Select Crescent Beach. You'll be glad you did. Not recommended for families with an elderly person. Select Sand which is a ground-level home with easy entry for older folks.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind review. You are quite correct - elderly persons may be daunted a little by the grand staircase up to SKY even though there is a nice resting level half way up - as you say, far better to stay in SAND with grandma and grandpa. We are often asked whether Crescent Beach is suitable for "persons with disabilities". We had a very difficult decision to make in this respect when designing Crescent Beach. In the end we decided that any attempt to make Crescent Beach fully compliant with 100's of government regulations regarding access by disabled persons would be extremely costly and unsightly and further would not work in any case since we wanted Crescent Beach to be in as "natural" a state as possible. Running concrete walkways everywhere would have spoiled that. So what we are prepared to do to support both the elderly and the physically handicapped requiring wheelchairs is to put in a temporary ramp on request. That ramp can provide gentle incline access to SAND which has a 6-inch step-up at both the front door and ocean patio door. But that does not solve all of the possible issues and we are looking at ways to provide access for wheelchairs or walkers to other areas of Crescent Beach, like the pool, without also making it into a concrete jungle.

Phenomenal vacation, incredible property and very attentive owners!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot rave about "Sky" more - everything about it is incredible - the property is in an ideal and tranquil location on the beach, the interior is beautifully decorated, with all of the conveniences of home, and the Paul and Fay Anne couldn't be more lovely and attentive. My family of six (4 kids ranging from 7 to 13) had the most memorable time here - from playing in the pool, exploring the ocean and shore, and feeding the resident rooster "Chick Chick." We ate all of our breakfasts at home, and found the kitchen to be very well-equipped, with a gas stove, and spices and oils. We are already planning to come back next year! Thank you Paul and Fay Anne for a wonderful home away from home!

Amazing house with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

The property was almost brand new. The location was prefect., quite and secluded. The snorkeling on the property was great. You will have to rent a car to see every wonderful spot of the island but it is easy to get everywhere you want to go from this location. The owners of the house live 20 min away so you get the best service ever if you need something. Fay Anne was great when we needed anything. You can't get much better than this. If we make it back to grand Cayman it would be hard to stay anywhere else.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. We try not to be intrusive but we like to be there for you when you need us. Despite its seclusion, Crescent Beach is close to so many East End and Northside amenities, and yet places like Spotts, Smith Cove and Seven Mile Beach are a quick drive away. It gives peace and quiet and yet great access to the busier places when you want to go to them. We look forward to seeing you again if your travels bring you back to Grand Cayman.

Peace, Tranquility and Access to all Grand Cayman Has to Offer

  • 5 of 5

I always read the reviews to learn what a property is really like and Sky reviewers did not disappoint! This lovely home is nestled in Half Moon Bay and Crescent Beach is a perfect destination if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and just connect with one another amid beautiful natural surroundings. The pictures really can't do the property justice but suffice it to say it was spotless, well kept and all the amenities specified were provided as claimed.

Deciding between Sky and Sand? They are the exact same layout but the perspective is a bit different. I preferred our choice of Sky because the view from the second floor was spectacular and we enjoyed coffee with the morning breezes on the front deck and cocktails in the afternoon overlooking the ocean. You just couldn't ask for more! Our family is also partial to not having any noise above us so that made our ultimate decision when booking. Fortunately our downstairs neighbors said the soundproofing was excellent and they did not hear us all week.

It was wonderful to have a full kitchen as we only ate out 4 meals in 9 days because you just couldn't beat the view and comfort of eating in! Food is very expensive due to the island status so don't be shocked by a massive grocery bill because it will still be more cost effective than eating out. Something to remember is that East End is a bit out of the way so you should be willing to drive 40-50 minutes to go to Seven Mile Beach attractions and restaurants with a rental car. We enjoyed venturing out daily to explore the island and go horseback riding/swimming, parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling and boat touring so a car was necessary. You can see all of our recommendations for things to do on the Crescent Beach website, it helps to plan a bit in advance.

Interesting notes about the location is that there are two bulls next door, we named them Zeus and Marble. They are harmless and just wander about their tethered lot with the chickens and roosters. We were also amazed when sitting down to dinner one evening we heard Chick Chick crowing outside our door which was 23 steps up! If you are a light sleeper, note that the resident roosters do crow incessantly in the morning starting at dawn or whenever they are hungry. We used a white noise app on our phones to block out the sound in the morning, it worked great.

We enjoyed our time immensely with Paul and Faye Anne and hope to see them again!

The island of Grand Cayman as a little over 21 miles in length. On the western end is the Capital, George Town, and a new luxury town called Camana Bay each featuring great duty-free shopping. An ultra-modern six screen theatre showing the latest movies can also be found in Camana Bay. Expect a 30 minute journey by car.

Also at the western end is the world famous Seven Mile Beach, a beacon for cruise ship passengers and yet still offering a feeling of space. Look for the house of the Governor of the Cayman Islands at the Governor's Beach section.

In West Bay, about 10 minutes from Seven Mile Beach is a motor museum featuring a fine collection of vehicles, while a little further on are the Cayman Turtle Farm and two Dolphin establishments both offering meet and greet with the fishy hosts.

While it is difficult to beat the snorkelling at Crescent Beach, your home, you might like to visit Smith Barcadere, also called Smith Cove, for additional snorkelling opportunities in a very small bay. It is popular and may be crowded.

Many people visit Spotts Beach in order to swim with the turtles feeding on the abundance of turtle grass. Sighting is not guaranteed but worth the chance.

Choose a North Sound tour with one of the marine tour operators - and visit the world's number one destination for getting close and personal standing in shallow waterwith the stingrays at Stingray City about a mile offshore from Rum Point - tours vary in content but you will probably also visit the North Sound reef and view an abundance of larger fish.

Charter a boat for the day and explore Cayman's pristine waters your way - or take a guided tour of the phosphorescent water near Duck Pond during the evening.
