Overview

About the property

Two Bedroom Beach House That Can Accommodate Up To Six People.

Welcome to Ríaluz, my intimate hideaway beside the ocean with a secluded ten-mile stretch of beach. You will share the land with birds, beautiful seasonal flowers, and a breathtaking coastline. Nestled within the biosphere of Río Lagartos, I created my home to sustainably coexist with the environment and the untouched landscape. The house is off-grid and completely solar-powered. Come relax at this natural paradise.

There is a base price for groups of 2 travelers, with each additional traveler increasing the price by $65 per night. A 15% discount is automatically applied to reservations of 7 days or longer, and a 30% discount for stays of 28 days or longer. For reservations during the holiday season of mid-December to mid-January, these discounts are 5% and 10%. For interested guests, provisioning and chef services are available upon inquiry.

The space

I built Ríaluz with the desire to foster a conversation between inside and outside. After working for several years with the Mexican government and wildlife protection agencies, I received permission to build within this precious biosphere reserve and bird sanctuary. Very simple but with attention to detail, the space was designed to be comfortable and connected to the sea, the sky, the stars and the birds.

Ríaluz is perfect for families looking for a unique place to explore, couples desiring a secluded getaway, and anyone wanting to relax in a home away from home. The house can accommodate up to 6 people and was built to have the lowest impact on the surrounding environment possible.

Please note that this home is not child proof and is not suitable for toddlers (age 12-36 months).

The house is comprised of two buildings, giving guests an ample sense of space and opportunities for privacy. In the main structure is the living room with a fully equipped kitchen and a master suite with a king bed. The living room has two sofas that can be converted into two twin beds. Outside, a bridge connects the deck of this building with the adjacent one. The second structure has a suite that can be set up with either a king bed or two twin beds, and an outside shower with its own deck. All decks have beach access. Above the main building is a lounging terrace with an outdoor bed and a bar. From everywhere in the house, there are spectacular views of the sea.

My painting studio is located in the second building across the walkway and has a separate entrance. Occasionally I myself may be at the beach and quietly staying here quietly during your visit.

The house is completely solar powered and has wifi, but the wifi is dependent on the weather and the house is best for people who want to unplug from their busy lives. The wildlife can be observed by walking along the beach or through tours given by the local expert Alberth from Río Lagartos.

About the Sea:

The sea here is gentle with low waves. Along the beach you can swim and walk along miles of beautiful white sand. There are beautiful and ever changing shells to be found. There are also opportunities for wind surfing, paddle boarding, sailing, guided bird watching tours and fishing expeditions.

About the Reserve:

Staying at Rialuz is best for those with a placid spirit of adventure. The entrance road is a narrow salt road that goes deep into the heart of the nature reserve, and the jungle has wild animals that will need to be treated with respect. We are off-grid and self-sufficient, so guests are encouraged to be mindful of their consumption of resources. It's the great isolation of the property and its nearness to nature which makes it unique.

About Playa Kuka:

The beach of Playa Kuka is a small off grid community which was developed with the environment in mind. The community consist of 4 private homes spaced amply apart, and together we are the most environmentally respectful development in the state of the Yucatan. Rialuz can be rented individually or with other homes if you are numerous or celebrating a special event. For inquiries into a beachwide rental, please write me a message.

About Río Lagartos:

Río Lagartos is a small fishing village of 3,000 inhabitants on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Located within the state with the lowest crime rate in Mexico, Río Lagartos is known for its tranquility and safety. It is a quiet haven resting at the heart of a natural habitat, beating with the sounds of roaming wildlife. With 395 avian species, it is a bird watcher's paradise -- notable for the thousands of flamingos that flock there every year to nest. Río Lagartos is located within El Parque Natural Río Lagartos. Nearby is also Las Coloradas salt lakes and many Mayan ruins and cenotes.

Getting Around:

The house is about three and a half hours away by rental car from the Cancún airport, and two and a half hours away from Mérida. You can get also get to the house by taxi boat from Río Lagartos. Arriving by day is highly preferable, so try to book your travel to arrive early. We recommend renting a white crossover car with good ground clearance. Remember to account for time needed to buy groceries on the way. We will send more advice and specific directions upon booking.

About Ana María Hernando

I am a visual artist from Buenos Aires who is based in Boulder, Colorado. My art practice involves painting, printmaking, textiles, installation, poetry and sculpture, and my paintings hang on the walls at Ría Luz. You can explore my artwork at anamariahernando.com

I began building Ría luz in 2013 with the desire to foster a conversation between inside and outside. Very simple but with attention to detail, the space was designed to be comfortable and connected to the sea, the sky, the stars and the birds. It is off the grid and solar powered, and I worked to make it one of the most environmentally respectful coastal developments in the Yucatan. It has been a pleasure to open my home to travelers from around the world, and to share this rare landscape with others.

Why Ana María Hernando chose Río Lagartos

The house is many kilometers deep within the Reserve of the Biosphere of Rio Lagartos. I worked for many years with the Mexican government and wildlife protection agencies to receive permission to build within the reserve. My home is completely off-grid and the most environmentally friendly coastal development in the Yucatan. While staying at Rialuz you will be truly immersed in nature and the intersecting cycles of flora, fauna, weather and tides. My home is unique, and offers an unparalleled level of seclusion and peace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This place is truly amazing. It is quiet, beautiful, full of wildlife and you can see the spectacular turquoise ocean from nearly everywhere in the house. The house itself is a wonderful piece of architecture and was a joy to experience for a few days. Ana and her son were fantastic hosts, too! We are already thinking about when we can go back.

Away from it all~

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for something unique and wanted to get away from the masses - well I found it. Ana's home is not only that but it is also beautiful! So clean and I could really tell I was in the home of an artist. Her colors and attention to detail were wonderful. The beach is entirely yours! We told someone in El Cuyo that we were heading to Rio Lagartos and they said "well you won't have a beach unless you take a boat to one". This was someone who lived in El Cuyo and they didn't even know about this hidden gem. We found all kinds of different seashells on the beach and didn't feel like we had to beat anyone out there. We were the only ones! David who helps manage the property has 3 dogs and one was a puppy and we fell in LOVE with her...they would come find us when we were out walking.

We also did a nature excursion one morning and had the best time. Crocodiles were right next to us at one point! Amazing! Lots of unique birds and the best tour guide that served us cervesas and water.

The town of Rio Lagartos is also a fun excursion. A neat fishing village that is still beautiful and not touristy.

Two things I didn't love: the wind and the seaweed. I understand the seaweed comes and goes but it was A LOT! It was nice though because just like a 5 minute drive away there was a beach with no seaweed but then you lost your privacy.

I highly recommend Ana's home if you are looking for something off the beaten path. I loved it and so did my family.

Owner's Response: Carole, It was a joy receiving you and your family, and I am delighted that you got what you wanted! Something I am so grateful to Playa Kuka at the Reserve is that it connects me with the simplicity of nature, and I feel deeply alive and relaxed in what is. All the birds, the shells, the stars, they shower you with abundance! I feel bad that you got seaweed. This few past months it does seem we got more than usual. The beach is so gorgeous without it. But I guess it's what it means to be in a place that is alive and happening in the flow. You were dream guests, and I would love to host you again! Ana

Beautiful and intense, true barefoot luxury!

  • 5 of 5

The last part of the drive to the house, slowly moving through the low forest on a narrow sand road, makes you understand what it means to be off the grid. We got there just after sunset and it was quickly turning dark with clear star formations filling the sky and the sound of the ocean right there. Magical and in such contrast to where we just came from.

The house was perfect for me and my husband; the kitchen well equipped with thoughtful instructions on how not to be wasteful with resources or to pollute the environment. Lots of sliding doors throughout the house, all with functioning screens to keep the bugs out – yes, you are on natures turf.

The master bedroom off to the side were open to the ocean and we never got too hot between the NE winds and the ceiling fan. The king mattress and pillows were great – thank you! Loved how our body clocks quickly adjusted to sunrise and sunset…

The roof deck was always half in shade and often with a refreshing afternoon wind passing through. Wish there had been a table by the sofas to eat lunch or dinner, but it didn’t stop us from sitting there watching the sun set over the ocean.

We had good cell service from the house and we already knew the WIFI was going to be a bit spotty - we were truly there to check out anyway.

Ana and her son were very graceful and accessible hosts and provided us with a lot of useful information prior to the trip. The property caretakers were very attentive and helpful as well. We highly recommend the nature tour with Alberth, who also showed us where to find local groceries and fresh fish off the boats in Rio Lagartos.

In terms of travel time, be mindful there is a time zone change from Cancun.

Again, thank you Ana for sharing this special place – we would definitely come back!

Utopia in the Yucatan

  • 5 of 5

Ana Maria’s wonderful home is a magical paradise for those looking for an exquisitely peaceful getaway in the beautiful Yucatan.

The property is perfectly appointed and incredibly comfortable. Inside, the kitchen is easy to use and well stocked for cooking, the dining and living rooms provide gorgeous views of the water, and the master bedroom and attached bath are elegant yet simple. Outside, you have a choice of the first floor deck and the roof-top; both are perfect for morning coffee, luscious sun, bird viewing, a sky full of massive amounts of stars, and breathtaking views of the water and the biosphere. The beach is anything but busy, with a cozy bench, softly lapping waves, and the sound of fishermen in the far distance.

Ana Maria is beyond delightful and welcoming. She is a talented artist, and we suggest a read-through of her exhibition catalogs in the small library. Her eye to thoughtful design throughout the property makes the stay all the more pleasurable. David is superbly helpful, available for an array of needs, and brings years of hospitality expertise to ensuring you have an excellent experience.

Rio Lagartos is nearby, yet worlds away. The quick boat ride to town offers further views of the gorgeous nature in the biosphere. The town is great for a bite to eat, a long stroll, chatting with residents, and getting supplies. Chichen Itza was well worth the drive, as was Rene Gonzalez, highly recommended once you arrive, as a guide, through the ruins.

What we learned that may be of help to others: 1) Grab some provisions in Cancun or Vallodolid before arriving. 2) Eat freshly-caught fish, easily obtained from a boat in Rio Lagartos. 3) At the property, we are mere guests of the biosphere, therefore prepare accordingly (wash clothes in unscented detergent and fabric softener, bring insect repellent, avoid dunes during dusk). 4) Enjoy the natural toiletries that Ana Maria provides as they are luscious and compatible with the environment. 5) If you are driving in, arriving in daylight is simpler. 6) Bring lots of reading materials. 7) Enjoy hours upon hours of special time with those you love, including yourself. 8) Be prepared to be wondrously alone in an astonishingly unspoiled environment. 9) Start planning your return visit. 10) And enjoy an enchanted utopia!

We are blessed to have taken many beach getaways. Ria Luz, hands-down, is one of the very best. C&A, Connecticut
