Beautiful boulders surrounding a stone cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a delight to the eye - both inside and out. And to the body - comfortable furnishings and extremely comfortable bed and bedding. There are three outdoor areas, one for cooking and eating, one for lounging and another with a table with umbrella next to a waterfall with lively frogs. Truly a one-of-a kind property. Location near the Botanic Gardens is a plus as well.

private beautiful sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

The Stone cottage is a private beautiful sanctuary filled with charm and exceptional care.

Mary Ellen provided everything we needed during our seven night stay. We were captivated with the gardens, rock waterfall and outdoor space. The interior also exceeded our expectations. Great/fun walking trails and parks surrounded the property. Everything within a mile and a half. We will be back

The Stone Cottage is a warm, comfortable and romantic property. It is very well appointed, comfortable and clean. The location is excellent. The owner, Mary Ellen, was super nice and went out of her way as a host. She even found and returned my wallet that was accidently dropped next to my vehicle! As a host of a vacation property that I own, I carefully looked at her property to see where she could improve it for other guests. I must say, just continue exactly what you are doing and all your guests will be happy! I highly recommend her property and look forward to coming back again.

Just lovely!!

  • 5 of 5

Staying in this little stone cottage was such an absolute pleasure, this is how it should be done!! Mary Ellen and Rick have put thier hearts into this place and it shows through every detail, every convenience, you won’t want to leave the comfy bed or the cozy couch by the fire or the lounge chairs out by the rock fountain . However if you choose to venture out you’re just walking distance from the Santa Barbara Mission, the Natural History Museum, the Botanical Gardens and public parks. It was by chance that I got a week long stay because they’re usually so booked up, now I understand why and feel so grateful that I got to experience it for myself. Thank you for allowing us to stay, it was just lovely!!

This is truly a unique property. If I could rate it higher than a 5, I would do that in a heartbeat.

One of a kind, clean, comfortable, great location. Architecturally unique. Had the feel of staying in a quiet country cottage. We will be staying there again later this year.

Better than the photos, immaculately clean, private

  • 5 of 5

The stone cottage is even better in person than the photos, which are quite accurate. The cottage is very private with two patios and a water fountain created by rocks so it is like a mini waterfall. We stayed just after Christmas in 2017 and the weather was in the mid 70's so I enjoyed sitting outside by the waterfall with a good book. The cottage is immaculately clean and I'm a fussy housekeeper so if I say it is clean it really was spotless. The kitchen is outfitted with everything, even foil, storage plastic bags, sugar etc. Nearby is a fantastic grocery store Gelson's so we ate at the cottage more than expected. And the walk in slate shower was even better than our oversized walk in shower at home - that's a first. Mary Ellen and Rick directed us to Maestra 42 which is an Italian restaurant frequented by locals. We ate there two nights sitting outside in late December and the food was excellent. The artwork and furnishings are tasteful. Netflix is provided and we watched our favorite series while viewing the beautiful outside lighting beyond the windows - 3 sides of the cottage so beautiful at night and bright during the day. We would recommend the stone cottage and thank Mary Ellen and Rick for their hospitality, not to forget the two fuzzy dogs who stopped by for a good pet.

About Mary Ellen Hoffman

I grew up in suburban Washington, D.C., but wanted to move to California from the time I was 5 after my aunt moved here to teach school, which roughly coincided with the opening of Disneyland. The closest I got was watching The Wide World of Disney on Sunday nights until I came to Santa Barbara on a spring break from college back in the 70's. I was smitten, but didn't manage to figure out how to live here until decades later when my daughter had the brilliant good sense to go to boarding school up in the hills in nearby Ojai. I moved to Santa Barbara in 2005 to be close by for her senior year, not really planning on staying after she graduated, but here I am more than 10 years later! (Conveniently, she is now a doctor in LA .)

Mary Ellen Hoffman purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Mary Ellen Hoffman chose Upper Riviera

We saw this amazing 1+ acre property for the first time on Father's Day of 2014 and moved in in September 2014, having fallen in love w/ the natural park-like setting and both the charming cottage and grand house; we were captivated by the whole package, but also by the fact that we were still close to everything (Need something from Trader Joe's? 4 minutes' drive!). We undertook some major upgrades to both structures, but retained all the character from the 1920's-30's.

We're looking forward to sharing it with others who want to experience Santa Barbara--and who knows--maybe decide to stay forever, too!

What makes this cottage unique

When you look out the majestic back windows of the cottage or main house at the huge trees for the first time, you can't help but be awed by the natural beauty of the scene, literally in your backyard. You immediately know why the original owner, writer and artist, Thomas Ripley, built the cottage originally for his art studio; he didn't need to go far for inspiration!

Nestled among live oaks and sycamores, but w/ plenty of sunshine, there is a peek of La Cumbre Peak from the property and a lovely park with walking trails a few steps out the back door. The closest attractions are the must-see iconic Old Mission, the Rose Garden and the Natural History Museum, all an easy 5`10 minute walk from the cottage. The open old-fashioned trolley has stops at all three locations. Walkers can get to downtown in 20 minutes, or it's a quick drive and park, too. Strolling State St is an activity in itself, but wonderful restaurants (such as Opal, Jane, Carlitos), boutiques and shops (Rooms and Gardens, K Frank) or the wonderful Santa Barbara Art Museum will draw you inside. Don't miss La Arcada with its many shops, galleries, restaurants and life-like bronze figures hiding in plain sight. From there, the magnificent courthouse is only a block away on Anacapa and Anapamu. And, for either the morning or afternoon tour, Tuesday-Saturday (closed November 15- February 15) head to Lotusland, considered one of the top 10 most romantic gardens in the world, well worth a 15 minute drive to Montecito. Grab lunch before or after at Jeannine's on Coast Village Rd or on the outdoor patio at the Four Seasons. There is wonderful hiking in Santa Barbara as well for the more adventurous, one of the closest trails to the cottage being the Jesuita Trail to Inspiration Point. Road and Mountain biking options are easy to access from the cottage, too. There are several beaches close by, including Arroyo Burro, East Beach, West Beach and Butterfly Beach (Montecito). Don't miss the Funk Zone for wine tasting and great food, day or night. But if you want to stay closer to "home" there is Los Agaves on de la Vina, Via Maestra 42 (our personal favorite) on Upper State, and last, but not least, do not walk, but run to McConnell's Ice Cream on Mission and de la Vina.
