You can also travel by trolley with a stop near the cottage. Everything is close by in Santa Barbara and several of its choice beaches are only a few miles away. Its also perfectly situated between Santa Ynez and Carpinteria to check out valley wineries, galleries and museums.

The Stone Cottage at Rocky Nook is an ideal romantic getaway for two or for a solo retreat or for someone here on a working vacation at UCSB or other business. It is fully appointed with all the amenities of home and then some, such as a regal four-poster Queen bed, all new kitchen appliances, a spectacular slate walk-in shower with skylight and huge, original iron paned windows on all walls. With a wood-burning fireplace and smart TV, you may not want to go anywhere, preferring to stay in for a cozy evening with a brandy or hot chocolate. Two lovely patios with seating, one with a gas grill, will beckon you outside though for dinner, coffee in the morning or an evening glass of wine. Or, you can wander further astray and stroll in adjacent Rocky Nook Park.

So, come experience the magical ambiance of the Stone Cottage and all that it has to offer you during your stay in Santa Barbara!

About Mary Ellen Hoffman

I grew up in suburban Washington, D.C., but wanted to move to California from the time I was 5 after my aunt moved here to teach school, which roughly coincided with the opening of Disneyland. The closest I got was watching The Wide World of Disney on Sunday nights until I came to Santa Barbara on a spring break from college back in the 70's. I was smitten, but didn't manage to figure out how to live here until decades later when my daughter had the brilliant good sense to go to boarding school up in the hills in nearby Ojai. I moved to Santa Barbara in 2005 to be close by for her senior year, not really planning on staying after she graduated, but here I am more than 10 years later! (Conveniently, she is now a doctor in LA .)

Mary Ellen Hoffman purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Mary Ellen Hoffman chose Upper Riviera

We saw this amazing 1+ acre property for the first time on Father's Day of 2014 and moved in in September 2014, having fallen in love w/ the natural park-like setting and both the charming cottage and grand house; we were captivated by the whole package, but also by the fact that we were still close to everything (Need something from Trader Joe's? 4 minutes' drive!). We undertook some major upgrades to both structures, but retained all the character from the 1920's-30's.

We're looking forward to sharing it with others who want to experience Santa Barbara--and who knows--maybe decide to stay forever, too!

What makes this cottage unique

When you look out the majestic back windows of the cottage or main house at the huge trees for the first time, you can't help but be awed by the natural beauty of the scene, literally in your backyard. You immediately know why the original owner, writer and artist, Thomas Ripley, built the cottage originally for his art studio; he didn't need to go far for inspiration!

Beautiful, serene property!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED Stone Cottage. The location is fabulous! My husband and I stayed for a long weekend and were blown away by how lovely the property is! This spacious yet cozy cottage was wonderful. And our hosts were delightful and welcoming! No question we will stay here again when we return to Santa Barbara.

The Stone Cottage is adorable and comfortable -- I could happily live there.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is so charming, quaint and well furnished, the bed and linens were amazingly comfortable. This is the first time I have ever checked in to a home or apartment and wished for rain so we could spend a day in and enjoy the accommodations.

Mary Ellen and Rick were extremely gracious hosts, they even provided a welcome basket that included a bottle of prosecco and treats. The kitchen was well equipped and a nice place to make a meal. The adjacent patios with gas grill, lounge chairs and table and chairs were nice for enjoying some quiet time before our day started and again when we returned home. We really loved sitting outside and listening to the water feature and of course the local frogs!

We took the train in from LA and never missed having a car. We did most things by foot and took a couple of Uber rides home.

The cottage is quiet and feels secluded but is also close to everything you would want to see or do in Santa Barbara. We can't imagine wanting to stay anywhere other than the stone cottage when we return to Santa Barbara.

The shower was one of my favorite features, the skylight made me feel like I was showering outside in the sunshine.

Thank you Mary Ellen and Rick for your hospitality. I can't wait to plan another trip.

Wonderful Tuscan-like Cottage !

  • 5 of 5

Spacious, clean beautiful stone building with charming outdoor areas. The sound of the small waterfall mingling with the singing frogs at night all added to the relaxing atmosphere of a perfect getaway. A ‘goody’ basket including a bottle of prosecco, good internet a comfy bed with everything you needed was provided by our gracious hostess Mary Ellen who also helped us get connected with an outlet to charge our electric car.

Thank you for a great stay - we will definitely be back!

We didn’t want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

The Stone Cottage is a charming, well equipped accommodation in beautiful Santa Barbara. We have rented numerous apartments and houses in Europe, but this was our first in the US. We look for several qualities when researching a vacation rental property: an owner who quickly responds to inquiries and questions, a quiet location, a kitchen sufficiently equipped to prepare light meals, and reviews that reflect cleanliness and care for the property. A bit of charm doesn’t hurt!! The Stone Cottage met our criteria.

We found Mary Ellen to be highly responsive to inquiries and questions. She was available without being intrusive and always generous and helpful. She even offered to lend me a wrap for an evening wedding by the sea.

We opted to use Uber rather than a rental car, and it worked well for us. We planned sightseeing so that we could work in a restaurant meal while out. As a result, we enjoyed local seafood and Via Maestra, an amazing little Italian restaurant. We took an Uber to Gelson’s market on our first evening, and bought enough groceries in one trip to make breakfast and sandwiches for 5 days. We even used Uber to attend a wedding at the Bacara Resort in Goleta. Uber was an efficient, convenient mode of transportation for us. Although we enjoyed visiting the Wharf and State Street, it was a delight to escape the traffic and tourists and to walk up the pretty, landscaped path to the tranquility of the cottage with the red door.

We had one problem with the property: we didn’t want to leave it! We would enjoy breakfast with the door open to hear the soothing sound of the garden waterfall. Then we would postpone a trip out so we could just gaze at the amazing landscaping, walk among the succulents, or watch lizards sunning on the boulders. The privacy and tranquility is amazing.

Thanks Mary Ellen for your warmth and for your artistic touches in both the cottage interior and the rock gardens surrounding the cottage. What a sanctuary you created!

Beautiful, private bungalow

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for my family of three. We brought our 6 month old to Santa Barbara to visit friends and family. The large living room was a great place for the baby to play and friends to gather. When we put the baby down for the evening we enjoyed the outdoor space with the frog filled pond :). The kitchen and bathroom were spacious enough for the 3 of us and the bedroom fit her pack n play perfectly. The only downside the openness of the bedrooom to the living room. The rooom does not have a door and the wall does not go up to the ceiling. That was only an issue when we were trying to get stuff done while she was napping. Otherwise, this place is perfect.

I highly recommend staying here when visiting Santa Barbara. It’s close to the beautiful mission and not far from town!

Owner's Response: Hi! And thank you so much for your wonderful review! I really appreciate it. I just want to let future guests know that the cottage is designed and advertised as a private space for couples. This was a special exception to allow a baby. Sincerely, Mary Ellen

Nestled among live oaks and sycamores, but w/ plenty of sunshine, there is a peek of La Cumbre Peak from the property and a lovely park with walking trails a few steps out the back door. The closest attractions are the must-see iconic Old Mission, the Rose Garden and the Natural History Museum, all an easy 5`10 minute walk from the cottage. The open old-fashioned trolley has stops at all three locations. Walkers can get to downtown in 20 minutes, or it's a quick drive and park, too. Strolling State St is an activity in itself, but wonderful restaurants (such as Opal, Jane, Carlitos), boutiques and shops (Rooms and Gardens, K Frank) or the wonderful Santa Barbara Art Museum will draw you inside. Don't miss La Arcada with its many shops, galleries, restaurants and life-like bronze figures hiding in plain sight. From there, the magnificent courthouse is only a block away on Anacapa and Anapamu. And, for either the morning or afternoon tour, Tuesday-Saturday (closed November 15- February 15) head to Lotusland, considered one of the top 10 most romantic gardens in the world, well worth a 15 minute drive to Montecito. Grab lunch before or after at Jeannine's on Coast Village Rd or on the outdoor patio at the Four Seasons. There is wonderful hiking in Santa Barbara as well for the more adventurous, one of the closest trails to the cottage being the Jesuita Trail to Inspiration Point. Road and Mountain biking options are easy to access from the cottage, too. There are several beaches close by, including Arroyo Burro, East Beach, West Beach and Butterfly Beach (Montecito). Don't miss the Funk Zone for wine tasting and great food, day or night. But if you want to stay closer to "home" there is Los Agaves on de la Vina, Via Maestra 42 (our personal favorite) on Upper State, and last, but not least, do not walk, but run to McConnell's Ice Cream on Mission and de la Vina.
