About Joyce Owens

I bought this house in 1978 when I first moved to Tucson. I lived in the house as a bachelor for years and entertained my friends and family for holidays and their vacations. For 25 years, my parents lived in and maintained the house and made improvements. In the recent few years, my parents turned the house back to my wife and to me. We have made some changes to add color and character but to retain the Catalina Foothills as the main identification and to keep it in a western style of decor. My wife chose the colors together with her decorator/boss and they joined together to paint and enhance the house. We intend to keep the house in the Owens family for future generations. Our son, a recent college graduate, will live there someday.

We still enjoy the city and have been using the house occasionally---but are making this home available for travelers who want to see what the Old Pueblo has to offer.

We live just southeast of Tucson, in Elgin wine country in a straw bale house that was Bob's dream to build. Joyce had previously worked in several tasting rooms and distributed wine in Tucson in the early days of the Sonoita Appelation wine industry. Today, while I commute to my consulting position in Tucson, Joyce has established her own herb based business in The Mountain Empire.

Why Joyce Owens chose Tucson

The truth is, I liked the house. I chose this house for the convenience to both the City areas I frequent and to the Sunrise Plaza and other foothills destinations, such as La Encantata. This house has views of the mountains, spectacular sunsets, and the city night lights. When I moved to this house in 1978, the foothills were undeveloped. The Foothills today has evolved into a country club lifestyle and provides something for everybody.

The natural wildlife within the property has included sightings of Gambrel quail, rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, javalinas, and roadrunners. The bird species goes far beyond my ability to identify them. This location offers convenient pathways for walking and jogging.

What makes this house unique

The arched entryways are a definite plus of the home's charm. The house's built-in vacuum system allows for ease of quick pick ups. A plus in each bedroom are full closets, with 2 in the master bedroom, that allows the guests to store the luggage and frees up in-room hang out space. In updating the property, Bob and Joyce decided to have custom, self-locking child safe door glides installed on the two sliding glass doors that access the pool. The fenced dive-in pool ranges from 3 1/2 to 10 feet in depth. Also, in redesigning the space to make it a respite for travelers, we have added kitchen condiments. The covered patio and pool area have updated Alfresco dining patio furniture and chaise lounges.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Joyce and Bob,

Our gang of 6 winter weary Canadians enjoyed your home once again. Thank you for being excellent hosts. We enjoyed the location close to biking), the hiking trails, and the Tucson weather. Thanks again - see you next year, eh!

A home away from home in the beautiful Catalina Foothills

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa de Owen for our daughter's graduation from U of A. The location is perfect and the views from the home are absolutely beautiful. The home was very spacious, very clean and the beds comfy. The neighborhood is quiet and secluded but near stores and restaurants. The house had EVERYTHING we needed down to the toothpicks for our martini olives. We had our morning coffee in the backyard and loved watching the local birds along with some newly hatched baby doves. We then took in the sunset with cocktails! The location is great if you are looking for some quiet downtime or exploring southern AZ. The owners, Bob and Joyce, were always available for any questions that came up. If I ever find myself back in Tucson, I would definitely stay again. Thank you Bob and Joyce for helping make our graduation week a success.

Great house, great location

  • 5 of 5

The house worked perfectly for our group of 6. The location was close to hiking, stores and restaurants. It was easy to get to and we enjoyed the patio around the pool. Would stay here again! The only bummer is that the pool water is too cold for swimming in March.

Owner's Response: Shaun, Thank you for your positive review of our property. We trust that your outdoor activities were enjoyable, as planned. Yes, we understand that the water temperatures was cooler than you would have liked, but that is the fickle nature of Tucson weather. After you left, the water temperature climbed into the 70's. Come back soon! Joyce and Bob

It was the perfect place

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying here, and once again it was perfect for us. This time we had my brother and sister-in-law with us and it still felt spacious with 6 adults. We used the fireplace and even the pool!! It is such a great area to be in, close to everything and we felt like it was very private. Thanks so much for your hospitality Joyce and Bob

Owner's Response: Chris and Ray, Bob and I appreciate your kind words and review. We enjoyed having you both as our guests. I would rate your stay as 5 stars. I tried to change my "distracted" Guest Rating to that, but VRBO customer service is unable to affect a change once it is submitted. Please know that your recommendation is important to us. We would warmly welcome you back or write a glowing referral. Regards, Joyce and Bob

Loved the location, secluded yet convenient. Joyce and Bob were very accommodating in rearranging the cleaning schedule so our friends could put up Christmas decorations prior to our arrival. The house was comfortable for the 6 of us.
