Because of our location next to the Chilkoot river and Chilkoot lake; a major salmon spawning area; the brown bears frequent the area during the summer and fall time. They use the beach front, roads and hills to walk to and from their sleeping and feeding area. The Chilkoot river offers world class viewing of the bears once the salmon are in.
There are multiple generations of bears that grow up here. The sows need a safe place to raise their cubs away from the boars so the housing area here is just that; "a safe place". The sows were raised as cubs here and in turn raise their cubs here which in turn keeps bears living in the area year after year after year.
They are safe from us and we are safe from them. We all share the area. There has never been a bear/human incident in all the history of this area. Yes the cubs can be mischievous getting into things from time to time which is their nature as cubs but we just love to have them around.
Along with the beach front and all of the various sea life we cannot say enough about what a blessing it is to live here.
The cottage sits on almost 5 acres bordered on one side by state land. This offers many opportunities of seeing bears on the beach or moving in the area along with mink, martin, squirrels, grouse, and land otters; all frequenting the area.
With the incredible solitude of location yet ease of getting to the river, or town, or the lake or the ferry, or driving into Canada or on into Alaska; this area fits as one of the top destinations in the north American continent for ease of access for experiencing true Alaska.
