About the property

Serene Peace And Quiet In Renovated 1870s Former Parsonage 4/5 BR, 4 Baths

Set in the historic hamlet of Barrytown, this originally 1870s former Parish House was recently acquired and tastefully remodeled to the highest standard. The house offers 4-5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. It is located next to a former church that is part of the property but not rented, in 3 acres of park-like gardens that include an elegant large in-ground pool.

The house offers the highest standard in terms of quality, comfort, and taste, and everything is recently remodeled. The dining room/ kitchen is the house's social center, fully equipped for delightful cooking and entertaining to celebrate the amazing local fresh farm food offerings. Adjacent are two comfortable living rooms, equipped with a working fireplace and a modern wood stove. Upstairs is the master bedroom, one large bedroom with two twin beds, a spacious office with two desks and another wood stove, and two beautifully appointed bathrooms. Downstairs and separated by a small hallway is the guest apartment with 2 additional bedrooms, a living room (that can also serve as additional bedroom), bathroom, and its own kitchen, ideal for bringing family guests while keeping some privacy. The large back porch is set up for convivial meals looking out onto the beautiful back lawn. A grass terrace offers two comfortable steamer chairs to recline and enjoy the view.

The large tastefully designed in-ground fenced-in pool lies like a little lake in a wooded area in the back of the property. A refreshing and invigorating swim takes you away from it all (available during summer only).

The location of this property cannot be beaten. Barrytown is nestled between the historic Hudson River estates of Clermont, Montgomery Place, Rokeby and Edgewater, an oasis of serene beauty and quiet. Red Hook Village is 5 minutes away, offering more shops and award winning dining. Farmstands are 2 minutes away offering delicious local fruits and vegetables (summer and fall). A 5 minute drive takes you to Bard College and its concert hall designed by Frank Gehry, with the renowned Bard Summerscape Festival. Less than 15 minutes across the river, Kingston offers all conventional shopping amenities whenever needed. The Omega Institute is 20 mins away. The FDR Presidential Library and the American Culinary Institute in Hyde Park are a 25 minutes drive. Hudson's antique shops and restaurants are 25 minutes away. The Catskills offer amazing hiking and New Paltz renowned rock climbing. Woodstock is a 25 minutes drive. Charming property

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend in Barrytown! The lovingly restored house is even more charming than it appears in the pictures. We had everything we needed and both the owner and property manager were available to help during our stay. The owner graciously had the pool cleaned for us on an unexpectedly warm October weekend so our kids could enjoy it. The house is located on a lovely, extremely quiet road, we virtually never saw a car pass by. The area is full of great things to do! We had a delicious meal at Market Street and went to Rhinebeck farmers market, both great recommendations from the owner. We also went apple picking at Rose Hill farm which was lovely. I can't recommend this property more highly, we hope to stay there again!

Charming Hudson Valley house

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean, well appointed and offered easy access to the surrounding Hudson Valley area. Check in/out was efficient and well coordinated. Overall good service. I would recommend the property to friends and rent it again.

Gorgeous country home on quiet lane. Elegantly decorated, beautiful landscaping and close to all.

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a wonderful week at this beautiful house in Barrytown. Tastefully decorated in a relatively minimalist but very comfortable manner - the house had everything we needed to keep folks 5 through 78 years old happy. A big kitchen with a great sound system meant singing and dancing while we all worked on dinner. A lovely pool was set a short distance from the house and morning swims amidst the trees were a meditation. Open spaces for soccer and frisbee golf and quiet evenings of movies punctuated by the distant horn of a passing train. Lots to do close by - great stables for riding (Welwyn is a standout), Rhinebeck and Bard are minutes away with Hudson and Millbrook relatively close as well. It was simply blissful.

Lovely house, great location.

We used Thomas's house as overflow housing for participants at a conference at Bard. Everyone loved it. Comfortable beds, lovely setting, quiet, in a sweet little village. We'll definitely use it again!

Ideal Family Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in this beautiful house with my family over the summer and it was absolutely perfect. Historic houses can often be quirky, but this stunning property has been lovingly and carefully restored so it provides all the modern conveniences while maintaining the charm of an older home.

The location cannot be beat, it is walking distance to the sparkling Hudson River, with a trail leading to a rare riverside beach. Barrytown is very centrally located, just 10 minutes away from fashionable Rhinebeck and just a few minutes more across the bridge to Kingston for convenient shopping. The best farm stand in the area is at the end of the street, Montgomery Farms, with the most amazing produce.

The house itself has large, airy rooms and fantastic light. The large central kitchen looks out over the back yard and pool area, which made it easy to keep an eye on the kids while they played. The house was very comfortable for our large group, with separate living areas, kitchen and bedroom for our extended family, which allowed the adults to enjoy their coffee in peace! It was an incredibly peaceful and relaxing place.

The pool is fantastic, and it feels like swimming in the forest as the wooded area that surrounds the pool provides dappled shade throughout the day. The grounds and the house provide plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, with a gorgeous back porch for family dinners.

This is the kind of property that fosters family memories, and is everything that a vacation house should be, idyllic and peaceful. I would recommend this house wholeheartedly, my only concern is that it will not be available for my next vacation!

Stunning property in idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this house very much! The grounds are beautiful, and the house is in immaculate condition inside and out (thanks to a renovation that preserved much of the character of the house). In the summer the pool is particularly beautiful - set in a grove of trees, it is incredibly private. The house is set on a no-outlet road, which means that there is almost no car traffic. There are lots of activity possibilities very close by, including lots of hiking trails on nearby public land (Poet's Walk, Tivoli Bays, Ferncliff) and the cultural possibilities of the Bard Campus, and nearby Rhinebeck and Red Hook. It is definitely possible to get here without a car (Amtrak to Rhinebeck, then a 10-minute cab from the station) but you will probably want at least one car in your group. This would be an incredible place for a family or group get-away. My kids were in heaven here, swimming and jumping on the trampoline, and I wasn't worried about needing to keep an eye on them every second.
