I grew up spending my summers here since 1968 - my first dip in the waters of clear blue Crystal Lake was when I was 2 weeks old! Spending summers here was such a special part of my life growing up as was my mother and grandmother before her. We've been very fortunate to keep the property within the family for 5 generations and counting and one thing I find most rewarding is being able to share this special place with others.
Jay Kulesza purchased this cottage in 1922
Built in 1922 by my great grandparents, only within the past year has it been completely renovated bringing it up to the 21 century modern standards but continues to hold the old world charm of a northern Michigan cottage. Plenty of room to spread out inside and out there is room to explore on land, in the water or climbing trees. The area abounds with adventure and is regularly featured as one of America's finest destinations, also known as "the other West Coast".
Jay, we had a great time at the cottage. We are interested in next year also, thanks!
The home worked nicely for our family for a quick weekend up north. Easy access to Frankfort while being nestled in the woods. Clean and family friendly home and property. The zip line was an added bonus. We would recommend to family and friends who wanted to visit any season.
It was just what we were expecting. Very spacious and updated.
We were able to enjoy breakfast on the beach in front of a fire
we built down at the beach. This will certainly accommodate a
large group. Downside is that our mom was with us and we
didn't realize all the bedrooms were upstairs with no bathroom.
As a result, she needed to sleep downstairs on the sofa, which
did not pull out. We really enjoyed our stay.
Absolutely beautiful weather this year! Perch fishing was good, but tapered off to give us time to ride bike to Beulah and enjoy one last (?) weekend of summer weather. Beautiful sunrises/sunsets and starlit nights. The cottage was as accommodating as we remembered from last year. Thank you!
My family of five, four adults, and my 17-month-old grandson stayed at Helen's Haven in September. First, we were blessed with great weather, sunny days which highlight the beauty of Crystal Lake and mild, late summer temperatures. The cottage was clean and comfortable. We all felt at home right away. I have stayed in other cottages, and this one was exceptional. The previous positive reviewers all nailed it and I don't think there are any details that I can add. Jay was a pleasure to work with and helpful in every way. We did meet a couple of "old timers" who either live on the lake as permanent residents or stay for the entire summer, and they were two of the most interesting people I have ever met. One knew the Helen of Helen's Haven and gave me a history lesson as did the cottage guest log dating back to 1942. I would not hesitate to return to the cottage should my family and I return to Northwestern Michigan in the future. Thanks so much for sharing your special place, Jay. The home was enchanting with a quality in remodeling that married the old with the new, we felt an immediate connection that will cause us to return. The property was a gorgeous...when you're inside you feel surrounded by the forest and steps away from one of the most beautiful inland lakes in Michigan, Crystal Lake! As remote as it feels you're 3.5 miles to Frankfort on Lake Michigan beautiful beach, amazing sunsets....shopping, not to mention choice in restaurants.
We were beyond thrilled with our stay and hope to rent again in the future. Home was well equipped with full kitchen, games, DVD's and nature galore. We especially loved the cozy look to the home with all the unique pieces of art and decor. The property was wonderful including the beach and dock. Lots of lawn to walk on too. Modern updates throughout. So happy there wasn't any cable. I did not watch the news for a whole week! WI-FI worked well for our tablets and Netflix on the SmartTV available and we enjoyed several movie/game nights as the weather turned cooler but was still beautiful during our trip. Sun room and deck was perfect for that morning coffee. The water was crystal clear and peaceful. Nice get away home if you are looking to relax listening to the birds and wind chimes (loved). Even on a colder, cloudy day there were places to go as everything seemed to be a short drive to including Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City and Frankfort. I brought my food from my local grocer but there's a supermarket 5 minutes away (Frankfort) which was convenient. We brought our own kayaks/life jackets/inflatables which worked well on the lake. **Point Betsie lighthouse is a must see especially for the view and Lake Michigan shoreline. And finally, Jay the owner was wonderful and available quickly by phone for any questions. I bet this place is spectacular in the fall with all the fall colors too. Something to strive for. Well worth the $.
Enjoy nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore including canoeing / kayaking on the nearby Betsie or Platte Rivers. Take a leisurely walk along the Frankfort pier or Point Betsie to get an up close view of our area light houses. Come during Autumn to enjoy the splendor of the areas Fall Colors along scenic M-22. During the Winter months Crystal Mountain and its fine downhill and cross-country skiing await you.
