Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

4 bdrm/4 ba -- sleeps 12. Hot tub, firepit, swingset & 100 yds to Cherry Beach

Our cottage is named for the most eagerly-anticipated time of day — sunset. Our favorite feature of Eventide is something that can never be owned, only shared. We invite you to watch the sun melt into the watery horizon as nature’s soundtrack plays the gentle sound of water caressing the shore.

Eventide is sited at one of the area’s finest beaches. Cherry Beach is a popular place to gather by day for fun in the sun and at sunset for it’s unforgettable vistas.

Located in Harbor Country, a popular resort area just 80 miles from Chicago, 40 miles from South Bend and 200 miles from Detroit, Eventide represents a chance to get away from it all, and stay close to home! Beaches, antiquing, biking, hiking, galleries, wineries, distilleries, and breweries, a fine art movie theater, a live performance theater and one of the midwest’s nicest casinos Four Winds are all part of what makes Harbor Country a favorite destination for many.

Our home is a cozy cottage about 2400 sf (total for 1st, 2nd and lower levels). There are 4 bedrooms (plus a family room with a full-sized futon) and 4 bathrooms. One bedroom has only a set of twin sized bunk beds. Please review the photos and room descriptions to ensure that our property would work for your family/group. We want to be clear about this upfront to avoid any confusion or disappointment upon your arrival. When considering this property, 6-8 adults would be comfortable (depending on your needs for privacy). No more than 12 people total (for example 6 adults plus 6 kids or 8 adults plus 4 kids).

About michael smith

We built a small family business in Chicago and realized that when you own your own business it's hard to give yourself a vacation. We distilled what we loved about the places we had visited and fashioned our home around that dream. We are a family of three with an extended family of friends who enjoy gathering at Eventide to share the moments of our lives that will become tomorrow's most treasured memories.

michael smith purchased this cottage in 2012

Why michael smith chose Harbert

Turn onto Cherry Beach Road and feel your heart beat a little more slowly. An allée of trees create a lush canopy above the gravel path and you are instantly transported to a place where nature encourages daydreams and families bond over sandcastles and s'mores.

This is actually our 2nd home in Harbor Country. In 2005, we purchased a home in Union Pier, but fell in love with Harbert's combination of larger more-private lots, woodsy setting and our parcel's proximity to the beach. Harbert stirred our souls in a way that reminded us of one of our favorite destinations -- Carmel, CA.

Like Carmel with it's history of being a destination of Bay-area artists, Harbor country attracts artists and appreciators of art. In fact, the poet Carl Sandburg made his home in Harbert. People come here to delight in the natural beauty of this location and to bond with their families. If that sounds perfect to you, then you are in the right place.

Amazing location and property that has it all!

  • 5 of 5

This home is in the perfect spot. The owners have literally thought of everything! We are a foodie family who loves to cook and the kitchen was well equipped to our standards :) We have two children that loved the swing set, tire swing, fire pit and bunk beds. I would highly recommend this home for a family or friend vacation!

This was a fabulous family vacation home

  • 5 of 5

The house had everything we could have asked for in a vacation rental. It was clean and beautifully decorated and private while also very convenient to access the beach from. I would definitely recommend this property to others.

Such a charming house with everything we were looking for in a family week at the lake.

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful with so many different areas to sit together inside and out. The central kitchen was very well equipped and up to date. We had an age range of 2-65 and there were activities for everyone. Very close to the beach with toys and a float available to take along. Great location-close to all the good shops, wineries, and restaurants. Comfortable beds and linens. Really everything we could want for our week of relaxation by the lake. We all would highly recommend and were not ready to leave!

Wonderful Week in Harbert, Michigan

  • 5 of 5

Six adults and one 4 year old found the Smith home very accommodating. So accommodating, we brought items that we never used. The kitchen is well equipped and the house is very child friendly so many games that all the adults enjoyed as well.

The fire pit was used frequently, in the evening, for s'mores. We bought lump charcoal for the big green egg and smoked ribs at 250 degrees for hours which were amazing, but mainly used the gas grill. Only one evening the hot tub was used!!!

This was our first vacation at Lake Michigan verses the outer banks, Seabrook Island, SC, or another southern lake area. The house location is only steps away to the stairs to the beach... perfect! We never had a problem finding a place on the sand to spread our blanket and beach chairs. The beach does get fairly populated, but no matter what time we ventured down... we always found a nice clean sandy area. Water temperature usually ranged around 72 degrees and the water is very clear. There is a sand bar perhaps 150 feet from shore in which you can see your feet in 3 to 4 feet of water. Depending on winds, the lake can range from very calm to 2 - 3 ft. waves.

Warren Dunes State Park is less than a 10 minute drive and well worth the $9.00 out-of-state entry fee. The dunes are amazing and if you can make it to the top, the view is incredible.

The best food shopping is probably in New Buffalo, for a large food store. We went to a winery, distillery, and brewery. My daughter and boyfriend did kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Beside visiting New Buffalo, we took a trip to Three Oaks, had lunch at the distillery and roamed the shops. The entire Harbert area has great antique shops.

Don't miss the sunsets.

A very enjoyable stay.... Aug. 5th - 12th 2017.

Thank you Michael & Sara.

Another great time!

  • 5 of 5

Our second summer visit to this property was as great as the first! We knew how well appointed the house was so brought a lot less with us this year. Our four grandkids 5 and under enjoyed every outdoor aspect available and we were entertained by their stage performances on the back patio this year. The slack line was a hit too! The weather cooperated and the lake was warmer than last year even though we were a few weeks earlier. Such a beautiful and comfortable home!
