The Wharf House - Old World Charm By The Sea

Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

The Wharf House is a beautiful and historic 18th century property located on the shores of the Montego Bay Lagoon, a large saltwater inlet of the Caribbean Sea which is part of the Montego Bay Marine Park. For several decades, The Wharf House has also been - and remains until today - one of the homes of the Delisser family.

We are not - nor do we aim to be - a hotel. We are a small and intimate B&B, offering four bedrooms furnished with family-owned antiques and lovely artwork from the Caribbean. Each of our rooms is unique, but all of them reflect - we hope - our passion for “beautiful things”…be they furniture, paintings, art & craft items, or merely the views you have from your bedroom windows.

The Wharf House has its own small private pebble beach (accessible only to Wharf House guests), a swimming pool shaded by massive cotton trees, a large seaside dock, and expansive tropical gardens dotted with a wide variety of fruit trees - mangoes, coconuts, ackees, breadfruit, avocados, lemons and pomegranates. Our staff will be happy to help you to sample some of these fruity delights.

Our property is home to a wide variety of wild life. The lagoon teems with fish and other sea creatures, and our gardens are filled with birds & bees & butterflies & lizards. And, yes, these wonderful creatures sometimes make their way into our house...and we would not want it any other way. Please bear this in mind when considering a vacation at our home.

We - and several generations of Delissers before us - have greatly enjoyed living at The Wharf House, and we very much hope that you, too, will enjoy your stay…however long or short it may be.

Nicky & Stefan

Location:

The driving time from Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport to the Wharf House is approximately 15 - 20 minutes. From our property, you can reach the Fairview Shopping Center (with its large supermarkets, pharmacies, and wide variety of trade shops) in about 10 minutes, by car.

Rooms:

The Wharf House has four bedrooms. Depending on your requirements, you can rent one bedroom, two bedrooms, three bedrooms, or the entire property. All bedrooms are equipped with ceiling fans and A/C. The rate for renting the entire property (all 4 bedrooms) is US$640 per night. If you wish to rent only one, or two, or three bedrooms, please contact us for a quote.

Two of our bedrooms - the Sea View Bedroom & the Garden View Bedroom - are located in the Main House. These two bedrooms are adjacent to the common living room & inside dining area.

The "Sea View Bedroom" has an antique king-size four poster bed, a walk-in closet, en-suite bathroom, and is equipped with a ceiling fan and A/C.

The "Garden View Bedroom" has antique twin beds, a walk-in closet, and is equipped with a ceiling fan and A/C. The Garden View bathroom is located in the Main House, across the living room.

Our other two bedrooms are, in fact, stand-alone cottages.

The “Sea Side Cottage” is located against the very shores of the Montego Bay Lagoon, offering lovely views of the Caribbean Sea from your four poster king-size bed. This cottage has its own small private terrace, walk-in closet, en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan & A/C.

The “Pool Side Cottage”, located a little further back in the gardens, is very private, and has antique twin beds and its own separate access to the shared swimming pool. It, too, has a walk-in closet & en-suite bathroom with shower, ceiling fan & A/C.

Our VRBO listing shows photographs of each bedroom - but if you need or want advice on selecting the bedroom ideally suited for you, please contact us. We will be happy to be of help.

There are several "common" areas, which - unless you have rented the entire property - you will share with other guests: the living room and inside dining room in the Main House, the kitchen, the dock, the swimming pool & gardens, and the pebble beach.

Our rates, which range from US$150 to US$170 per room, per night (double occupancy), include Continental Breakfast for 2 persons and free high-speed WiFi. A staff gratuity of 15% of the total cost of your stay is customary & will be very much appreciated.

Please note that during our main season - from December until April - we give preference to those bookings which are for our entire property, and for a minimum stay of one week.

B&B service:

Our Continental Breakfast is served, buffet-style, between 8am and 10am. Depending on the weather, breakfast is served either on the dock, or in the common living/dining room. You are, of course, free to help yourself to your breakfast from the buffet & carry it to your room…or to any part of the property which takes your fancy.

Our Continental Breakfast consists of seasonally-available tropical fruits, eggs cooked to your liking, breads and toast and pastries, jams, fresh fruit juices, and freshly-brewed Blue Mountain coffee & a variety of teas.

Amenities:

The Wharf House has a separate & large building, which can be used for meetings, Yoga, dance, and retreats of all kinds.

A small paddle boat is available for guests who wish to explore the Lagoon. Snorkeling equipment is available for those who wish to explore the nearby reef. Also on property: a ping-pong table & a wide variety of board games.

Staff:

The Wharf House is staffed at all times by our live-in caretaker, Leroy, and our housekeeper, Elisha, and our cook, Pinky.

Additional services - Cook:

If you have booked a minimum of 3 rooms with us & require a full-time cook to prepare your lunches and dinners…no problem. Just give us advance notice, and we will organize a full-time cook for you. This service comes at an additional daily charge for the cook and you will also have to purchase your own groceries for the preparation of your lunches and dinners. Please contact us for costs details and general information. As a general rule, we do not provide full-time cook service for bookings of less than 3 rooms...but, subject to availability, we may be able to do so. So just give us a shout...we will do our best to meet your wishes and needs. Please note that we do not permit guests to cook their own meals.

Additional services - Driver:

If you require a driver, to get around…no problem. The Wharf House has its own licensed tourist taxi, driven by Verol, who will be happy to take you anywhere you wish to go. This service comes at an additional charge. Contact us for cost details & general information.

Additional services - Massages, reflexologies, facials, Reiki, chiropracter, yoga classes etc.

The Wharf House has its own spa room, located right on the sea. Enjoy the sound of the waves lapping against the shore, as you are pampered by one of our professional therapists. One of the nicest places in the world.

  • 5 of 5

If you are considering a stay at The Wharf House, I'd like to highly recommend it. We stayed for a few days before sailing from Montego Bay on a cruise to Cuba, and we all agreed that our time at this lovely home was a high point of our trip. I've had the opportunity to travel to many places in the world through my career, and this historic home with it's beautiful sea view, majestic trees and lush gardens, and friendly and interesting owners and staff is a favorite.

We arrived hungry after flying all day from San Francisco, and Pinky served us a light supper of chicken sandwiches, salad, and ice cold Red Stripe beers. We ate on the dock with twinkling lights and beautiful stars overhead, and the sound of the water lapping on the shore. We immediately felt very welcome and very much at home.

The home and cottages are lovely, with comfortable beds and furniture, and lots of places to congregate if you're there with friends or family. I'd recommend having Pinky arrange meals for your stay...they were fabulous and very affordable. Stefan and Nicky were so kind to us, and a wonderful source of information about Cuba, since they had traveled there many times. We now consider them friends, although we just met them on this trip.

This is a wonderful place to stay, and my friends and I all loved it and hope to return. I think you'll love it too.

It can't get better than this

  • 5 of 5

For our family reunion it was the perfect setting. We had the needed privacy in our cottages and rooms, but at the same time there were the ideal communal spaces where we gathered. We had all our meals on the amazing deck but we also played games inside in the cozy living room. The kayaks and the beach were well-used during our stay. Each room is beautifully decorated with local art and everything is well-maintained.

I see that other reviewers have mentioned the warm welcome by the staff and by Stefan and Nicole.. I can only second and third that. Stefan checked in with us regularly to see if everything was fine and he gave us excellent advice and help and he was willing to answer all our questions about Jamaica. Pinky the cook made the best Jamaican meals we had and she is a warm-hearted person on top of that. Elisha and Leroy were kind and generous. We also had the services of Verol, a licensed driver, to take us to the Blue Mountains and back and around Mobay. I can recommend him highly.

The serenity and charm of this house will long be remembered by everyone in our family. Don't hesitate, book the Wharf House.

An Island Paradise

  • 5 of 5

There is no way to put into words the amount of magic and transformation that I experienced from my stay at The Wharf House. From the moment we entered the driveway and then drove through the gate the magic had begun. My dreams were vivid and intense and I was shown a connection to the Island and the people that I would have never thought could be true.

The last day of my visit I walked out on the doc and raised my hands to nature to the sky, the ocean the mountains and the trees and I truthfully have no idea how I will ever put that moment into words.

I am so grateful for this Wharf House the owners Goddess bless you for offering this sacred space!

The staff!! Oh my goodness how I felt the love 💗

Thank you

I recommend this place to everyone 🌟

Beautiful and Relaxing; Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Myself and three colleagues stayed at the Wharf House from 1/2/17 to 1/7/17. From the moment you enter and see the view from the back deck all cares drift away. I can not capture in words how beautiful the deck was in the evening with all the different colorful lights hanging from the trees. In the morning the ocean view is spectacular; the water calm and tranquil. The property is so beautiful both inside and outside. It is very welcoming and comfortable. We stayed in the garden view and ocean view rooms in the main house. The beds were very comfortable and I loved coming in at night to find the bed turned down. The rooms had refreshments available anytime which was just perfect after we would return in the evening. Our hosts Stephan and Nicky met us the first evening and provided such a warm welcome. For the remainder of our stay Stephan was always available if we needed anything. Pinky made the most scrumptious meals each day and packed us wonderful lunches for each afternoon. We had delicious preparations of shrimp, pork, chicken and fish along with wonderful side dishes. Two of us were vegetarians and our dietary needs were perfectly met. You will never eat any other fried chicken once you have had Pinky's fried chicken. I do so miss Pinky! Breakfast was amazing with fresh coffee (most important), eggs, fresh fruit and fresh baked breads and muffins. Each morning and evening Elisha would be sure everything was just perfect and greeted us each day with a warm and welcoming smile. One highlight of our stay was fresh coconuts from the property that Leroy expertly prepared. The coconut water was so very refreshing. I can not say enough about the staff and the accommodations at the Wharf House. We will definitely be back. I would like to come for a visit and just sit by the water looking for starfish :)

Too amazing for words!

  • 5 of 5

To try and put a place and experience like The Wharf House into words is challenging because no matter how eloquent my words are they will fall short in capturing the beauty, character and energy of The Wharf House. My family was lucky enough to spend ten days over Christmas and New Years at the Wharf House and it was nothing short of spectacular. Our group ranged from 5 to 69 years old, we have all travelled various places throughout North America, the Caribbean and Europe and never encountered the level of warm hospitality and relaxation we found here.

The grounds and house are full of history and charm, with the property originally built in the 18th century. Massive trees, vines and flowers that you can only find in a place that has been left untouched provide shade and beauty. The house is filled with beautiful works of art and I highly recommend a trip to the owners art gallery in town where you can pick up a piece of your own. Everything is beautiful but not ostentatious or uncomfortable. The massive dock was our favourite place to look out at the water while listening to music and playing board games or eating a wonderful meal. The longer you are here the more you will discover, there are personal touches everywhere.

There is a wonderful amount of wildlife both on land and in the sea. We had the pleasure of seeing urchins, sea cucumbers, fish, star fish and three octopus while snorkelling or from the dock. Small lizards and birds have made their homes here and are seen regularly. The Wharf house is a home not a sterile, impersonal resort, and it is apparent in the most splendid way that you are in Jamaica!

The staff Pinky (cook), Alicia (housekeeper), LeRoy (groundskeeper) and Russell (security) are all amazing! We had the most amazing Jamaican food the entire trip and not once did it disappoint. You must have the Pinky sauce on your chicken! There is no need to leave the property but on the few excursions we did, the first thing our daughter had to do upon our return was tell them about her adventure.

The owners Stephan and Nicky are outstanding hosts whom went above and beyond our expectations. Everything they organized for us from massages to drivers was excellent. I highly recommend using the taxi service they suggest. They are not only great hosts but they are incredibly interesting people and we feel like our trip was enhanced simply by having the opportunity to get to know them. Thank you so much it will forever be in our hearts.

Owner's Response: Dear Hailey, Thank you so much for this lovely review. We loved - and I mean, loved - having you & your family stay with us. You guys settled right in, and long before the end of your stay we had stopped thinking of you as guests and thought of you more as part of our family. Little Lilly is especially missed…Leroy has decorated his bedroom with the drawing Lilly made of him; and Pinky still howls with laughter whenever she tells the story of how Lilly used her wand to turn Leroy into a pumpkin & told him that he must not move. Pinky, Leroy, Elisha and Russell all send you their love & regards. As for us, Nicky & myself…all we can say is that it was a treat to spend time with you all. I particularly enjoyed my dock-side chats with your dad, of which we had a few whilst you were out intrepidly exploring our island. Please make sure to convey to him my fondest regards. We very much hope that you will come back soon! All the best Stefan & Nicky

Peace Perfect Bliss....

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Wharf House in Reading, Jamaica from 1/9/17 to 1/13/17 for a Shamanic Priestess training. Weeks before arrival we were contacted by Nicola De Lisser to inquire about travel arrangements and food allergies to arrange meal plans. As I have certain food allergies I found this to be incredibly helpful and very perceptive on her part. Most accommodating to say the least.

I stayed in the Garden Room which was lovely. There was plenty of drawer and closet space to take clothes out of suitcase and live relaxed like this was really my home....which Nicola told us all it was to be for the next five days and to make ourselves at home...she and her staff makes it very easy for you to do this here.

Ahh yes the staff...I wish I had each and every name to mention here because they are just AMAZZZING!!!!! But I will just say with there was fresh hot and cold water in our room everyday....along with hot chocolate, hot teas, coffee/cream/sugar. The windows in the rooms opened up wide and let in the fresh Jamaica air which was done every morning when the beds were made up....followed by being closed in the early evening with turn down service. This said a lot for me and did not go unnoticed which is why I must mention it here. Such a beautiful property with powerful energy and the staff makes it a point to ensure that it all gets to you.

The food....OMGoodness....where do I start. Miss Pinky is a profound chef of a high caliber who has certainly found her calling in life. Her sweet love and passion is in every dish. I learned a while back that truly great food comes from the heart, blends with the recipe and it's quality ingredients. I can promise you it is in every single dish you will have here from Breakfast to Dinner to Dessert. There is something for everyone and many many Jamaican specialties to try that you probably have never heard of unless you have traveled to this island before or are a Native. Let's just say, the food is reason enough to stay here because I'm pretty sure they aren't open to the public as a restaurant so if you don't stay you are missing out to visit this area of Jamaica and not eat Miss Pinky's cooking.

I found the amenities to be absolutely fabulous...the linens were of the highest quality...towels were super thick and soft...the grounds were immaculate and fragrant of Jamaica....the furnishings in the Main house were personal and delightful.... I felt like I was back at my Grandmothers home....

Why Nicola Delisser chose Montego Bay

The Wharf House has been in my family for several generations. For much of that time, it was one of my family’s homes in Jamaica…a place where we lived, and laughed, and enjoyed seeing our sons and daughters, grand-sons and grand-daughters & nieces and nephews play in the gardens, swim in the sea & the pool, and - quite generally (and far too quickly) - grow into adulthood.

But The Wharf House - at various times during my family’s ownership - has also been: a famous restaurant, operated as “Norma’s on the Wharf” by renowned Jamaican chef Norma Shirley; a luxury villa, available for short-term vacation rental; and a long-term rental property for some of our Jamaican friends and acquaintances.

Today, The Wharf House has been re-conceived as an intimate B&B property…a home away from home…your home in our home. We - Nicky & my husband Stefan - live on property. Not all the time, but as much & as often as we can. If we are not on property during your stay, our lovely staff will be delighted to look after you.

The Wharf House is - believe us - a truly magical place, and we look forward to sharing our home with you.

Nicky & Stefan
