Overview

About the property

400 Sq Ft Cabin, Queen-Size Bed, Full Bath, Kitchenette, Smart TV, WiFi

The Barn Star Guest Cabin is tucked on the edge of an expansive valley and surrounded by National Forest and the Falls Creek Archeological/Recreational Area. Thousands of acres of the San Juan National Forest surround the property. "Hanging Valley" offers summer and winter recreational activities like hiking, biking, rock-climbing, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. And the Barn Star offers an amazing location, spectacular views and serenity – all within a 10 minute drive to Downtown Durango with its wonderful restaurants, breweries and shopping.

The rental studio is 400 square feet on the upper level of the stand-alone cabin (the downstairs portion is not occupied and is used as storage and occasionally as studio space by the owner). There is designated parking next to the cabin entry also at the same level making it easily "accessible".

The cabin is appointed with fun colors, updated vintage touches and art & accessories. There is a hotel quality queen size bed with down comforter and organic cotton sheets, a kitchenette with quality appliances, cookware, utensils and a full-sized refrigerator. The full bath has tub/shower combination, a marble-topped vanity and terrific views. There is a Smart TV so you can access your Netflix and Amazon Video queues as well as dedicated Wi-Fi for the cabin. And in the winter, the propane cast-iron stove provides your on-demand heat and added ambiance.

Outside there is a seating area that invites you to enjoy the views and the peace & quiet. It's not unusual to see elk, deer, bears and coyote in the meadow. And if you're a bird-watcher you'll see hawks, vultures and eagles soaring along the ridge-lines to the east and west. A short hike takes you to an overlook of the Animas River and valley.

Well-behaved, friendly dogs are welcome at the Barn Star. Please mention the size and breed of your dog(s) in your reservation request. Visiting dogs should be kept under your control while on the property, either by voice control or on leash. Directly across the road are hundreds of acres where your furry friend can run free. A collapsible, fabric-sided loaner crate(s) is available and stored under the bed. Additionally bowls, towels, brush, cookies and waste bags are provided. There is a 2 dog (45 lbs and under) or 1 large dog (over 45 lbs) maximum. 2 large dogs may be considered, but additional cleaning fees may apply. *When checking availability, be sure to check that you are traveling with your pet in order to calculate the proper fees.

In addition to the activities right out the front door, the cabin is a short drive to the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway and the Animas River. Mesa Verde is a great day-trip as well as the mining town of Silverton, and Pagosa Springs with its famous hot springs. The ski town of Telluride is a beautiful 2 hour trip through some of the best Aspen stands in the state - if you are visiting in the fall season, the colors there will not disappoint. And Purgatory Ski Resort is 30 minutes up the highway offering both winter and summer activities.

Please note most all of your questions can be answered by reviewing the cabin’s amenities. For accurate pricing, including discounted rates for longer stays, just input your dates and a quote will be generated automatically. For any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

About Heidi Miller

Hello and thank you for checking out my listing! I've owned this property since 2012 and just finished construction in June of 2015. The guest cottage was my temporary home while my main house was being built. I loved living there! The views are spectacular, it's peaceful and very comfortable.

I moved here from Santa Barbara, CA - I traded the beach for mountains and couldn't be happier! I lived most of my life in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. I'm an active K-9 handler for La Plata County Search and Rescue and a volunteer EMT. I hike, bike, ski and love the lifestyle our area offers. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Heidi Miller purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Heidi Miller chose Durango

It was always my dream to design and build a home. I was looking for a place where I'd have privacy, but not be too far from amenities. I wanted beautiful views and access to nature. I found all of that here in Hidden Valley. My property is surrounded on the east and west boundaries by National Forest land which makes it look like it's hundreds of acres instead of 2!

What makes this cabin unique

I think the most stunning feature of this property are the remarkable rock formations that create our views to the west. Enjoy!

Great space; great time.

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful location, gorgeous views, easy to find, very cute space. Perfect for my son's 12th birthday trip. Having the San Juan National Forest across the street was fantastic. It was also very easy to get into town for shopping and the rec center; also an easy drive to Purgatory. Had a great time.

Dog (and people) heaven!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at the Star Barn Cabin. Each morning we made coffee in the well-equipped kitchenette, hiked in the San Juan National Forest on trails right across the street (!), and then headed out to explore the wider area (downtown Durango, Mesa Verde National Park, and Silverton, all within easy driving distance). Heidi was an excellent host--friendly and accessible yet respectful of our privacy; we especially enjoyed meeting her adorable sidekick, Pippa. The cabin is perfect for two people and a furry friend, and our only regret is that we didn't have a dog to bring with us. With its proximity to miles of San Juan hiking trails, thoughtful amenities, and dog-friendly touches (e.g., designated dog towels and treats), the Star Barn is heaven for both dogs and their humans.
