January, February usually excellent skiing for the down hill enthusiasts and cross country skiers. Sunrise Ski Resort an easy 45 minute drive - opposite direction from the crowds coming in from Pinetop means little traffic to get stuck in. Wonderful cross country trails within a few minutes drive of the cabin - or right out the door if the snow is good.

Whether family vacation, get together with friends, solo retreat - this place offers peace, beauty , views, birding, dark black night skies, proximity to hiking, bike trails, fishing, canoeing. Very well equipped kitchen makes cooking a pleasure. Plenty of room for privacy.

Please note the 8 guests maximum. And children do count as people! The cabin fronts on an 8 acre pond. Liability insurance and joint ownership of the pond EXCLUDE access to the pond in the rental.

Deck offers sweeping views of meadows and pond. Front porch gets early morning sun - perfect for that first cup of coffee. Spectacular dark skies for astronomy buffs, pond stills the air for Solar observing. Bald Eagles regular visitors to ponds.

This has been our family vacation home for 10 years. Much loved for family gatherings, cooking extravaganzas, magical holidays. Life gets in the way and with one family living out of country and the other two locked into work schedules place does not get used as much anymore. This is a family area, small children frequently in and out of the cabin. We ask that you not bring weapons onto the property.

This is our family retreat. Comfortable, friendly, welcoming. We are located in a very small six member HOA and jointly own 27 acres of riparian area that includes the pond. Our liability insurance does not permit guests to access the ponds under any circumstances and we ask that you honor that condition of renting. We also ask that given the peaceful nature of the valley that there is no loud music or deck activity after 10 PM. ATV - we know they are popular but only on designated tracks and trails. Not on the land, please. It's been badly abused in the past and we are trying to restore and encourage growth of native grasses and wild flowers. Please note that the number of guests limit (8) is strictly enforced - violation means eviction and forfeiture of security deposit.

The pond fronting the property is off limits - however Nelson Reservoir (10 miles) and Luna Lake (9 miles) allow for canoe/kayak launching. Rivers in the area offer great fly-fishing. Guides available out of Greer as are trail rides. Proximity to both down hill and XC skiing make this a winter destination. Spring and fall the foliage is beautiful and the hiking first rate. June/July tend to be monsoon magnets. Storm watching from the deck a thrill. Some FS roads are groomed for cycling. There are sanctioned ATV trails in the area, however we ask that you not ride such vehicles on the property. Land is fragile and we are trying to nurture the wild flowers.

Casa Malpais ruins just outside of Springerville worth a visit as is Sipes Preserve - birds, ruins, local history. Original ranch house now the HQ.

Birding and photography enthusiasts can't go wrong anywhere in the area. Astronomers, casual sky watchers, will love the night sky. Some nights looks as though you can touch the Milky Way.

Elk herds come through on a regular route - watch them from the deck. If you are lucky they will go for a dip in the pond.

Alpine (7 miles) sleepy little cross road village with great ice cream, bait, gas, library, good food and live music at Foxfire, same at The Still (new , have not checked it out). Chicken fried steak at Bear Wallow legendary - or so my sons say.

The area is made for ditching daily stress, putting feet up after a day on the trails, watching the pond life, and maybe hear the wolves one valley over. It's not a "party" house or location. Nightlife is elk bugling, owls hooting.

5 hours by road from either Phoenix or Tucson. Commuter flight from Phoenix to Showlow (60 miles). Private planes use the Springerville air port.

Grocery shopping limited to Bashas and Safeway in Springerville. Can get milk, eggs etc. at the gas station in Alpine.
