About this property

Spacious, Renovated Historic Home

As you enter this unique, historic home you will discover a level of gracious, artisan living that encourages creativity and relaxation. Original art, spacious rooms and oversized windows invite you to enjoy your own unique approach to vacation life. Enjoy dramatic views that take in the Gastineau Channel, Sandy Beach and the quaint towns of Douglas and Juneau. This 2200 square foot home was built in 1914 and has been carefully renovated into a spacious, modern home.

The Fleek House, named for the original owner/builder, offers 3 bedrooms each with one bed that can accommodate one or two adults for a total of up to 6 people. The home also has an upstairs toy/book nook area that is open to the hallway and does not have a door. This nook has a loveseat that opens into a narrow 'twin' mattress. We require an additional guest fee of $10 per night for more than 6 guests and we limit the home's total occupancy to 7, unless your situation would make sense for the layout of the Fleek House.

Please note that the Fleek House has a basement studio apartment that is rented year-round to our resident caretaker. The entrance to the basement unit is completely separate from the entrance to the Home.

A hand built entertainment center houses a large TV and wifi router in the living room. Comfy furniture and warm throws invite you to snuggle in and enjoy the view, or catch a Netflix show on TV. (Apple TV is available with a complimentary Fleek House Netflix account.)

The kitchen offers granite counters, custom maple cabinets and an eat-in bar with seating for four. The appliances are stainless steel and include a double electric oven and a gas range top, a dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator/freezer. Gather meal inspiration from the cookbook collection and prepare an Alaskan meal fit for kings and queens.

The Fleek House has a full laundry/mud room with high efficiency washer and dryer on the main floor.

Relax and unwind in the oversized master suite on the main floor. A spacious bathroom features a walk-in tiled shower, double vanities, a separate commode room and a walk-in closet.

Climb the stairs to discover 2 bedrooms, one with a queen sized bed and one with a full sized bed. There is also a bonus /toy nook with a loveseat that opens into a twin bed. A full bathroom with a tub is available upstairs.

There is a barn door to stairs leading down to a landing and a locked door to the basement studio apartment that is rented and has it's own entrance and driveway on the 5th Street side of the home.

The Fleek House is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the small town of Douglas. You can walk from the house to a really great dining and cocktail experience at the Island Pub which is only 3 blocks away. Or enjoy one of the many award-winning Alaskan Brewery beers at Louie's Douglas Inn Bar, also only 3 blocks away. If you are a walker, this home offers several easy walking loops from .25 mile to over 3 miles in length. In fact, historic downtown Juneau is only three miles away if you really want to stretch your legs!

There are two off-street parking spaces in the driveway off of E Street for the Fleek House. The parking spot on the front of the house facing 5th Street is for the basement apartment only.

We are not able to offer in-home smoking options. For those able to smoke outside and properly dispose of cigarette butts, this home might still offer a lovely accommodation.

Cozy wedding party basecamp
When we were initially looking at renting a house for our elopement, Sydney and Alan were more than helpful and gracious about hosting a crew of 8! Upon check-in, we found personalized details, and Sydney called to make sure that we had everything we needed. The house was beautiful and the kitchen very well appointed. This house was also located just up the street from a nice little bar/restaurant that specializes in wood fired pizza, yum! The Fleek House is only a 25 minute drive to the ski hill which was a huge bonus for us. Thank you so much Sydney and Alan for hosting us and making it feel just like home!

Fleek House
We came from Alabama and had Christmas with our son and his family who live in Juneau. It was a great home for all of us to stay together. Their house is not big enough for us all. The home is comfortable and roomy with 3 nice bedrooms. Our stay was wonderful and we enjoyed our family very much. Sydney and Alan we super host!

Awesome place to stay in Junea.
This was by far the nicest vacation home we have rented so far. We loved the historic charm of the house. Everything was SOOO clean (I was nervous to dry my face at night for fear of getting makeup on the brand new looking white towels). Sydney & Alan keep their house the way I like to keep my own. The house was also very well stocked with kitchen dishes, utensils, pots and pans. The view outside the front windows was beautiful. Great location to get to everything you could want to do in the Junea area. We would defiantly stay again! Thank you for trusting us with your beautiful home.

AhhhMazing!!
We knew nothing about where to stay in Juneau, Alaska. The VRBO listing for the Fleek House looked perfect for our friends trip. We still had no idea where it was in relation to Juneau. It is located in the most perfect place- atop a hill overlooking Gastineau Channel. It proved a gorgeous picture window view of the channel, GIANT cruise ships, seaplanes, helicopters, eagles, and other wildlife. Douglas Island is just minutes over to Juneau via a bridge. Take advantage of all Juneau has to offer. You won’t be disappointed. And the Fleek House with all of its history and amenities will be a perfect base camp to explore.

About the host

Host profile image
Hello! We are Sydney and Alan and we LOVE houses, especially houses with character and charm. Alan is a contractor and Sydney is a graphic designer turned shoe store owner (she owns Shoefly Alaska in historic downtown Juneau). Together we re-design homes and either sell or rent them to people who also love houses. Sydney grew up in Southeast Alaska, spending time in Cordova, Yakutat, Ketchikan and Juneau. Alan grew up in California, specifically the very Northern part of the state with massive redwood forests and the brilliant green Smith River. They met in in California, got married and decided to move to Juneau, Alaska. Alan agreed to a five-year adventure and over 25 years later is still here enjoying all Southeast Alaska has to offer!

Why they chose this property

Again, we LOVE houses with character and charm and this rustic mining home was on the verge of condemnation when it came to our attention. We tramped through the home in the dark, cold of winter and instantly could see the lovely potential it had. As we like to say, the home has "good bones." The home became our "side" project and we worked on it in our spare time from 2009 to 2015. We discovered that the home was built in 1914 and was known as the Fleek House up until we purchased it. This home has survived two major fires that destroyed blocks of downtown Douglas and with our structural improvements and modern insulation and heating systems , it is one of the coziest homes in Douglas when the Taku Winds howl up to 100 miles per hour every winter. We are pleased to know that this home will continue to grace the hillside of downtown Douglas for years to come.

What makes this property unique

The Fleek House offers a hand-crafted, artisan home space that we think encourages relaxation while inspiring creativity. Read a book curled up in the living room or sip a great wine at the kitchen bar while you admire the view down the Gastineau Channel to Taku Harbor. Gather fresh Alaska seafood and all the fixings for a gourmet meal which your whole group can cook up in the spacious kitchen. Or skip cooking in and stroll to a great cocktail and dinner at the Island Pub only three blocks away. This home offers a slice of small town life with some urban-level restaurant, bar and theatre options. A great combo!
