About the property

Peace, Privacy, Thousands Of Acres Of Wander, Hunt, Sky, Fish, Ride And Hike On

It's impossible for a description to give justice to the Retreat, a custom log cabin that sleeps seven comfortably. All modern conveniences and incomparable views of Flint Creek Valley. You have thousands of acres to wander on, hundreds of miles of trails that disappear into the wilderness, an unchaperoned Western experience as good as it gets. If you like peace and quiet, nature, and privacy, the Retreat is the place to take a deep breath and let yourself be yourself.

The Retreat is part of a retired sheep ranch homestead from the 1930s. The owners live on the ranch but will absolutely respect your privacy. The ranch is no longer a working ranch but it does have horses, donkeys, goats, a Shetland pony, lots of dogs and cats, rabbits, chickens (including roosters) and a tortoise named Morty. They are all friendly except for a banty rooster named Trouble. The roosters might wake you up in the morning but don't feel bad, because the ranch eggs are the best you've ever eaten.

Flint Creek is a two-minute walk from the cabin. We have about a mile of frontage on both sides of the creek and there are honey holes, but we'll leave it up to you to find them. (Otherwise they won't stay honey holes.) Rainbows, browns, cutthroat. Bring any kind of rod. Right now blue-winged olive duns are hatching and the air is filled with swirling blue.

Worried about bugs? Don't be. An occasional mosquito and an occasional tick. The horses have been out since spring and we took a total of three ticks off them this year. We have a few weeks in summer in which the deer flies and horse flies come out but they're not bad. No black flies or swarms of biting gnats like some places we know.

The property is full of wildlife: deer in the meadows, moose in the willows, beaver, muskrat, cranes, wild geese and ducks, owls, hawks, eagles, bobcat, fox, coyote, and tons of small furry things that the rest of the animals eat.

The ranch is also a major crosswords for mountain lions although only the very lucky get to see them. We see one about every other year. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks took a census last year and counted 36 different lions here. They pose no threat to people.

There's an abandoned mine about a half-mile from the cabin. Granite County was the site for a major gold and silver rushes in the 18th and 19th centuries. If you like mining history or like exploring genuine ghost towns and find abandoned miner's shacks next to a hole some poor soul dug into the ground over a century ago by himself. Some of the mines like the one near the cabin were larger scale and their superstructures still stand. You get a strong sense of history when you explore the frayed cables, wrenched iron, chutes, sluices and splintered timbers. You could easily spend a month here exploring our ghost towns and ghost gold and silver mines and mills.

We just bought the cabin and are in the process of upgrading. We've decorated with antiques and western memorabilia. The pictures don't do it justice.

The open floor plan naturally brings everyone together either on the porch waiting for stars to come out or in the living room around the wood stove, or at the dining table. The master bedroom is downstairs and is private. Upstairs in the loft, there are four open bedrooms. (Open means the bedrooms are open to the loft and so have three walls instead of four. Two of the bedrooms have queens and the other two have single beds.

In 2016 we're putting in an outside fire pit so you can sit around a fire at night, any time to year. You can't overestimate the numbers of stars in a Montana night sky.

You may ask if you can bring any pets, and we respectfully ask that you do not. The ranch has a large Maremma (an Italian sheepdog) named Mel who is a guardian dog and protects the property. He doesn't like strange dogs and will try to chase them off. Mel does like people, however.

You'll find the cabin warm, comfortable. We aren't a luxury guest ranch such nearby The Ranch at Rock Creek or the Triple Creek Ranch, which offer any activity you can think of and four-star gourmet cooking for $1,200 and up a night). We figure you can cook for yourself and you know what you want to do. We don't offer guest services and laundry services, but the cabin does have a washer and dryer and dishwasher. What we offer is privacy, as much solitude as you can handle, and nature's wonderland.
