About the property

5-bedrm, family-friendly cottage surrounded by water with beautiful views

"Sekani" is a cottage situated on a point in Georgian Bay with water on three sides and spectacular views in many directions. Every room in the house, except the bathrooms, has a view of water. The main rooms in the house have floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, while the bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows.

Please note that the cottage is surrounded by water and wilderness, and that there is no road to the cottage. Access is by boat from a marina about 10 minutes away. A water taxi will take the renter to and from the cottage. While at the cottage, the renter can use the provided kayaks, sailboat or outboard boat.

*** The cottage is now fully booked for 2018. We are not currently accepting bookings for 2019, but send an inquiry if you are interested.. ***

Detailed Description

The house was designed by noted Toronto architect Jeff Armstrong. The living and dining rooms of the house are a single large space with rough-cut split cedar paneling and cathedral ceiling. The living room is sunken with two small steps separating it from the rest of the house. The north-east corner of the living room is almost completely glass and provides spectacular views in many directions.

The master bedroom suite consists of a master bedroom, a library/study and a master bath. The master bedroom juts out from the rest of the house and has windows on three sides with beautiful views. The library/study doubles as a fifth bedroom.

A large back hallway with a large skylight provides access to three additional bedrooms and two half-baths. At the end of the hall is a game room. The game room, with three large floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, can either be set up with a table for breakfast and games, or can be set up with a ping pong table stored in a nearby closet.

A fully-equipped kitchen is located in the center of the house with a large window and a glass door on one side that look through the game room and out to the water. The kitchen is equipped with two refrigerators, a smooth-top stove/oven, a dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, as well as platters, mixing bowls, etc etc.

A large deck with BBQ and deck furniture is on two sides of the house, and provides a wonderful place to sit and look at the views (see photos!).

Kayaks, sailboat and outboard motor boat are stored in a boathouse located about 100 m away from the main house. Renters are permitted to use 15hp outboard motor boat provided they have a valid Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

The house sits on about 32 acres of land with about 7000 ft of very irregular shoreline with three large points and a number of smaller points. The property consists of mostly smooth open rock near the shore, and a forest in the interior (mostly the typical wind-swept Georgian Bay pine made famous by the Group of Seven). The property and surrounds are heaven-on-earth for a geologist. The ponds immediately to the east of the cottage are a popular spot for frogs, and many kids have spent hours frog hunting here. The irregular shoreline provides many different spots to go swimming, with each spot having its own character. About 10-15 mini-islands ("reefs") immediately off-shore in various directions provide interesting swimming destinations. One is known as the "jumping rock" because it has a fun place for kids to jump into the water. It is possible to go "reef-hopping" along a chain of these mini-islands.

There is quite a bit of wildlife around. Frogs and loons can be heard almost every night at the right time of year; ducks, seagulls and hawks are often seen; an inland lake on the property is popular with beavers; and there is a local colony of trumpeter swans (released as a trial re-introduction by the Ministry) which one occasionally sees.

American Camp Island, a Georgian Bay Land Trust Island open to the public, is located about 1 km west of the property across the water. This island is notable because of its flat open rock (think tennis court flat) and is a popular spot for picnicking. On one side is a 5 m cliff overlooking deep water which is a popular jumping spot. This island is easily reachable from Sekani using kayaks or outboard.

There are also lots of islands and reefs nearby that provide interesting small boat destinations, as well as another Georgian Bay Land Trust island about 3 km away. Contact the owner for other ideas for an active holiday.

Though there are a number of other cottages visible across water, there are no cottages that one can easily walk to, and the feeling at the property is one of privacy and relaxation.

New this year: A fresh basket of organic fruit and vegetables every Saturday from Clearwater Farms ( (July and August only).

Excellent in every respect

  • 5 of 5

There is very little I can add to what the other reviewers have said. Sekani is a very well-considered property that hits the sweet spot between having it all, and yet not feeling too precious. I loved the layout of the building which gave everyone a nice balance of privacy and social space. It's position on the property is wonderful, perched firmly on a giant whaleback of rock and commanding a wonderful view to the west. Georgian Bay is a very special landscape and Sekani offers full immersion. The owner is extremely well organized both in pre-visit communications and in the care of the place. We look forward to our next visit - the only downside being the hard realization that it is not our own to keep.

Remarkable stay, remarkably well organized!

  • 5 of 5

We rented Sekani for a week with a Family and Friends group. We all count ourselves among the very fortunate to have spent time at this wonderful cottage. Other's have spoken vividly about the beautiful views, sunsets and ample terrain for exploring and I agree completely! As well, Phillip is extremely well organized and everything went without a hitch. We were met by a very warm, personable property manager, enjoyed a great ride to the very well appointed cottage and loved every moment of our stay. In good weather or bad (we had a bit of rain) this is comfortable, beautiful, fun place to be. Just rustic enough to feel cottagy and so well appointed you won't miss a single thing. And the stars... Oh! the Stars! Thanks Phillip for a wonderful trip!

Front row seat to Georgian Bay

  • 5 of 5

We rented Sekani for a week in August.

The boat access cottage was as advertised. We loved the open feel of the cottage with all the sliding glass doors.

But the location was beyond our expectations.

It is definitely a spectacular example of rugged Georgian Bay landscape, smooth rock and windswept pines.

There are so many places to explore by kayak/canoe.

Some of it sheltered, some not so much.

Between watching some storms rolling through, swimming from the Boathouse, kayaking, and a fabulous boat trip over to American Camp Island. Our week went by too fast.

Both Philip, the owner and Moe, the property manager were great to deal with.

Lovely week by the water

  • 4 of 5

Great views and a well stocked cottage made for a wonderful Georgian Bay experience. The owner and his property manager were very helpful in answering questions and showing us around. We swam off the shore every day and made good use of the kayaks.
