SUMMER 2017 UPDATE: After a short season offline for upgrades, this country-in-the-city home finally re-opened for summer bookings! Just in time as the festival season kicked off in St. John's and rooms around town filled up quickly.

We have extended the hardwood flooring to include not just the master bedroom on the main floor but the extra calm, quiet and cozy downstairs bedroom. A few other touches (like re-furbished painted wood stairs) bring out the pristine cottage charm of the interior. Soon we will tackle the "plain jane" exterior to match the aesthetic of the rooms inside, but for now we can't wait for this beautiful space to complete your trip to our favourite place in the world.

The sound of the Waterford River running along the backyard is all the tonic you will need after a long day of weddings, work or sightseeing. A view that is hard to believe is less than 2km, connected by bike and walking trails, to the heart of downtown.

Three levels of decks look over a sun dappled yard with mature trees and a burbling brook. Lots of light throughout the house. Attached on one side. Views out front and back. Off street parking.

Mainfloor: Living room has picture window, a pullout twin sleeper, Luxurious and stylish armchairs, original mantel, TV, DVD player. Queen master bedroom with hardwood floors and private deck. A full bathroom recently updated.

Top Floor: Twin bedroom with adorable dormer window looking over the back/river. Double bedroom with large closet looking out the front over a historic cemetery/greenspace

Bottom Floor: Double bedroom (now with hardwood) has large closet. Large kitchen with lots of cupboard space, drip coffee and an espresso machine! Dining room with attached deck for optional outdoor dining. High chair available. Side door into kitchen provides option of access to the bedroom on this floor without disturbing those on the main floor above.

About Emily Deming

I am a travel writer and journalist. I write reviews of local restaurants and cultural events. I was a geophysicist but when I moved to St John's for a temporary work assignment, the pull of this place was too much to resist and so I left a career that would have taken me away from Newfoundland eventually in favour of making this my permanent home and forging on into the unknown!

I grew up in California, and St. John's reminds me a lot of the hills and views and colourful streets of the bay area in Northern California. Though the laid back attitude is more like San Diego.

I live with my partner (Ken Holden - a photographer/postman who is from St John's), our daughter, a husky from Labrador and a cross-eyed cat from New Orleans.

We love to catch bergy bits for our cocktails during iceberg season and are never tired of the amazing adventures on this island.

Lovely and lots of room

This is a lovely property in a great location. Lots of room for a family and very well equipped. The hosts are very gracious and helpful with restaurant recommendations. We had delicious bagels and breakfast things waiting for us. Thanks for a great stay in wonderful St. John's!

Great property in a great location!

We recently stayed at Ken and Emily's place and it was great! Very clean, quiet and well equipped with everything you need! Emily and Ken are great to deal with and even had a very well stocked fridge when we arrived - a very nice touch. I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a place to stay in St. John's.

Excellent stay

Property was very clean and tidy, everything worked. (although I was unable to operate the espresso machine) I appreciated the coffee/breakfast supplies to tie me over till I was able to do my own shopping. Noise from the neighbouring duplex was minimal. I would certainly consider staying again, especially in warmer climate to take advantage of the rear decks.

great place

Arrived to find fresh bagels on the counter, milk, oj and a half dozen eggs in the fridge. Very nice welcoming touch. Ken and Emily were very quick in replying to our questions prior to our arrival. Parking is a little tight but managable. The unit was very clean with a well equipped kitchen and had hotel quality linens. The multi levels added charm to the character of the place. Would stay again.

Great Locations

This quaint home is the perfect home away from home especially if you enjoy walking. It is an easy 1/2 hour walk to the shopping & dining area as well to numerous historical sites. If walking is not your thing, it won't take you more than 10 minutes to the shops and dining.

We were 5 friends 60 - 75 and had no problem walking back and forth to most of the things we wanted to do. If you plan on driving down the coast or visiting other harbours it is easy access to the highways that take you all points north, west and south.

The house is clean, well kept with a well stocked kitchen. The bonus is there is a washer & dryers so no need to over pack.

The 4 bedrooms are a nice size with two of them facing a small river so if the sound of running water helps put you to sleep these are the rooms for you.

There is a lovely deck off the eating area where you can enjoy snacks or dinner overlooking a lush backyard with the small river there to add to the enjoyment.

Our host Emily and Ken are very easy to get a hold of in case of questions and will get back to you quickly with any inquiries both before and after your arrival. But as the house was well set up we had no need to contact them until the end of the stay for closing instruction.

You will never find a more hospitable group of Canadians as the Newfoundlanders. Stop them on the street and ask questions. They will not only help you out but make suggestions of what to see and do and where the best eating places are. Loved every minute of it and plan to return again.

Thanks Emily and Ken for providing a wonderful, comfortable place for us to park our suitcases, lay our heads and rest our feet.

Very comfortable, relaxing and close to down town.

We found this home just like our home away from home, each bedroom was equipped with very comfortable beds and the master bedroom had a lovely deck that we enjoyed early in the mornings. Also off the kitchen there was another deck with barbeque, coffee table and chairs. The sound of the small brook in the back yard was very soothing.

The bathroom was very modern and equipped with lots of towels, the hair dryer was a very nice touch as we forgot ours.

This home is located very close to down town, the sights were spectacular, signal hill, cape spear, petty harbour, George Street, the down homer shop, the bascillica, the Rooms, flat rock are just a few of the sights that we would recommend seeing.

St John's has so much to offer.

Thank you very much to Emily and Ken for giving us the opportunity to stay in their lovely home so we could explore beautiful St. John's.

Thank you also for the delicious bread, milk and eggs, what a great way to start our vacation.

All of downtown St John's with its international renown for its mix of traditional and cutting edge cuisine, its unparalleled bar and pub culture, its famous live music scene, and cultural attractions is a short jaunt from this property. In just a 15 minute drive the other direction you hit Petty Harbour with the longest zip line in North America, fresh seafood by the harbour, fishing and the new mini-aquarium.

In any direction for the property you will find hikes, whale watching, berry picking, and stunning views all within a walk or a short drive.
